Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting

February 29, 7:00 PM

The nation’s electrical system negatively affects birds, but technologies differ in their impacts. February’s program, “Birds on the Wire,” will explore these varying impacts. Speakers Dr. Erik Nordman and Kim Walton will share interesting facts and address common misconceptions about how our electrical grid system affects birds and bats. Dr. Nordman is an associate professor of natural resources management at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). He earned his Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the State University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. He has more than 15 years of experience working with renewable energy systems, including wind and solar energy for Kenya’s tea industry, public perceptions of offshore wind energy development and the pest-resistance of biomass crops. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant in 2012 to conduct research on renewable energy and to teach in the Environmental Studies and Energy Engineering departments at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. Kim is the Program Director at GVSU’s Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. She also teaches classes on sustainability and policy for GVSU. She has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial & Appropriate Technology from Appalachian State University and a Masters in Environmental Analyses and Public Administration from Western Michigan University.
