David Flaspohler | Houghton, MI
2024 Board Candidate
I am currently the interim dean of the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University. Prior to that, I was a professor of avian conservation biology at MTU for 24 years where I taught Ornithology, Field Ornithology and conducted bird-related research in the Midwest, Hawaii, Mexico, South America and New Zealand. I am currently a board member of Copper Country Audubon, a chapter which funds a significant research effort in addition to education and bird conservation work. I have published about 85 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters as well as contributions to the New York Times and other outlets. For 23 years, I have taught a birding field class that visits Whitefish Point Bird Observatory.
Why do you want to serve as a board member for Michigan Audubon, and what would you like to contribute?
I have been doing conservation-related bird research for about 30 years (including graduate school) and am deeply invested in birds as a means of understanding the natural world as well as connecting people to nature and wildlife. I regularly lead birding outings for alumni, students, and other groups. My main areas of contribution would be a good understanding of bird habitats and conservation, particularly in the U.P., writing and speaking skills, networking with regional academic institutions, and enthusiasm for birds of all kinds.
What is your favorite bird and why?
I get this question all the time and can honestly say that my appreciation for all birds prevents me from singling one out above the rest. I do love to watch Common Nighthawks fly, and recently got a pair of Black-capped Chickadees to nest in a box on my front porch. Ovenbirds and Hermit Thrushes are wonderful.
