Given the current situation with COVID-19 and out of an abundance of caution for health and safety, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our in-person camp experience for the summer of 2020, and will instead be offering a dynamic MYBC experience virtually from June 21–26. We’ll offer assignments and “fieldwork” that campers can do in their backyards, neighborhoods, and in local natural areas.

We’re excited about the activities we’ll be able to share with this year’s campers. There will be a variety of learning opportunities that cover:

  • Daily lessons in ornithology applicable to birds of Eastern North America;
  • Participation in species point counts, bird banding activities, and other community science projects;
  • Conversations with expert speakers on key conservation and avian topics from around the state and U.S.;
  • Mentoring and small group work to maximize shared experiences;
  • Sharing unique and collaborative birding and outdoor experiences with birding peers;
  • Building friendships through shared interests and experiences.

This year’s virtual camp offers collaborative options with speakers from across the state and beyond. It also offers campers some creative license and leadership opportunities, by putting them in the driver’s seat of their experience. Through thoughtful layout and instruction, we hope to facilitate a week of learning, friendship, and fun.

The MYBC committee is excited to share our passion for birds and conservation while growing that of our campers. We are hopeful that the plethora of opportunities available through this virtual experience can help inspire and propel us to a continued successful event this year and in years to come!

A limited number of spaces are available for this virtual camp experience. Interested 13 to 18-year-olds may apply through the link below. Campers will be mailed a packet of resources, reference materials, and other goodies prior to the beginning of camp. The updated camp experience will cost $150 per camper. The application deadline is May 22.

Your support is needed!

Your gift supports our camp, yes, but it also directly supports these kids who are looking forward to a bird-driven, once-in-a-lifetime learning experience this summer! Your sponsorship gift will go entirely to both ensuring as many students are offered full scholarships as possible as well as providing equipment, software, curriculum resources, and materials for our campers to have a fully-supported, positive experience. Click here to donate.

Our hope is that these bird-loving kids will become the next generation of birders, scientists, conservation-minded citizens, and individuals who value, understand, and enjoy birds and the natural world as a whole. Your sponsorship will help these budding birders and curious naturalists have the very best experience we can offer them during these challenging times — and with lifelong skills and values that give back! This year, you can create your very own fundraising page for MYBC! Each camp costs approximately $20,000 to facilitate and your influence can help this program continue. Creating a fundraising page for the MYBC is as simple as creating a username and password, setting a fundraising goal, adding your photo and story if you like, and sharing your fundraising page link. If you have questions about donating toward MYBC or would like help creating a fundraising page, please contact Communications & Marketing Coordinator Molly Keenan at 517-580-7364 or mkeenan@michiganaudubon.org.
