When Birds Are Near

We can’t wait to cozy up to a warm fire with a mug of cocoa and this book — and you should, honestly, do the same! An overview of the book shares, “In When Birds Are Near, fresh new voices, as well as seasoned authors, offer tales of adventure, perseverance, and fun, whether taking us on a journey down Highway 1 to see a rare California Condor, fighting the destruction of our grasslands, or simply watching the feeder from a kitchen window. But these essays are more than just field notes. The authors reflect on love, loss, and family, engaging a broad array of emotions from wonder to amusement.”

Among the contributors is Alison Vilag, one of our Whitefish Point Bird Observatory field staff, who has so eloquently shared her tales as waterbird counter, Piping Plover monitor, and more from the Point.

Check with your local independent bookstore for purchasing options.

Wood Warbler Coffee

Wood Warbler Coffee supports and promotes the conservation of natural habitat for migratory songbirds and other wildlife by donating a portion of all proceeds from the sale of their fresh roasted, ethically sourced specialty coffee, to nonprofit conservation organizations (including us!).

Their coffee is Smithsonian Bird Friendly Certified so you can feel good about the cup of joe you are enjoying. We may be a smidge biased, but we really like the Michigan Audubon Bird Song Blend.

Symbolic Gifts

Maybe you’re looking for a gift that gives back? Consider one of these options that will bring delight to your friends and loved ones while also supporting the birds they love.

Adopt an Owl

Would you like to give a symbolic gift to the bird lover in your life? Our Adopt an Owl program is a unique and rewarding way to support the banding program at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, one of the top migration spots in the country. When you adopt an owl in someone’s name, they will receive:

  • a 5 x 7 color photograph and profile of the selected species;
  • an adoption certificate with their name on it;
  • and the satisfaction of knowing this symbolic adoption is helping WPBO continue this important research.

Visit wpbo.org to learn more about the owl banding program or click here to Adopt an Owl.

Make a Tribute Donation

Making a tribute donation is just like making a regular donation with a couple of extra steps:

  • Choosing whether the donation is “in memory of” or “in honor of”
  • Providing the name of the person you are paying tribute to
  • Contributing the name and address of anyone you want to receive an acknowledgment of the donation

You can make your tribute donation here.
