Birding Tour – Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors

June 12 – Sharonville State Game Area

Birders who would like to add a Henslow’s sparrow to their life list and other wildlife watchers are invited to join the Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors for a morning of birding Friday, June 12, at Sharonville State Game Area in Jackson County. The bird tour will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. and will travel through both grassland and forested habitats.

The tour will begin at the Sharonville State Game Area Barn. From there, the group will caravan to other points in the game area. Participants should wear long pants, long socks and sturdy shoes. Pants should be tucked into socks and insect repellent should be worn, as the tour will go through some tick-heavy areas. Binoculars will be available for those who need to borrow them.

To register, call Tom Jones at 734-612-6677 or Holly Vaughn at 313-396-6863. Participation will be limited to 20 people. Those needing special accommodations are welcome. Tracked wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Sharonville State Game Area Barn can be found at 5754 Fishville Road in Grass Lake, Michigan. Basic directions from I-94: Take the Clear Lake Road Exit No. 153. Head south (turn left) on Clear Lake Road, which then turns into North Francisco Road. After about 5 miles, turn left onto Fishville Road. After 4 miles, the barn will be on your right.
