Join Bill Sweetman of Bsweet Tours for a great tour of Florida April 9-16, 2015. Mid April in Florida is a magic time for birders. Not only will all of the Florida specialties be present in their breeding finest, but it’s the season when many Neotropical migrants begin passing northward through the state. At this time the weather is generally pleasant and most “spring breakers” should be back in northern climes with their noses pressed to their textbooks.
This trip will concentrate on finding the “Florida specialties” and as many northbound migrants as possible. Some, like the larger wading birds, are easy to find. Others, like the Snail Kite, Short-tailed Hawk, Spot-breasted Oriole and Red-whiskered Bulbul can be downright difficult to nail down. We will venture into the Keys where we will search for “Keys specialties” such as, White-crowned Pigeon, Black-whiskered Vireo, Gray Kingbird, Mangrove Cuckoo and Antillean Nighthawk (may be too early in the season). While in Key West a one day boat excursion to Garden Key in the Dry Tortugas (75 miles west of Key West) will climax this week of exciting birding. In short, we will visit some of the best birding sites in the state from Orlando south.
One delightful feature of this trip is the opportunity to get close to many beautiful birds, providing wonderful close-up photo ops.
