For many of us, identifying ducks, loons, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor: these waterbirds travel quickly and seem just subtly different. But lakewatching offers some of Michigan’s most exciting birding opportunities. Join Alison Világ, who’s conducted WPBO’s waterbird count for three seasons, as she breaks down her methods of unraveling these sorts of identifications.
Alison Világ grew up with the Berrien Bird Club in southwest Michigan and currently calls Traverse City home. She worked at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory as waterbird counter and Piping Plover monitor from 2019 through early fall 2020, and then counted waterbirds further west on Lake Superior in October 2020.
