Join Michigan Audubon at the Bernard W. Baker Sanctuary on Oct. 22 for a stewardship workday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.! If you have not been to this sanctuary, it is a beautiful place with grassland, wetland, and forest habitat. We will be working to maintain the trails, remove invasive autumn olive, and will complete other tasks as needed.

We always welcome new volunteers, and please know that we will not send you off on your own! Michigan Audubon staff will provide guidance and work alongside you.

To ensure that the experience is enjoyable and as fulfilling as possible for you, please consider the following information when preparing for the workday:

  • The weather for the end of October is variable – check ahead of time and dress in layers. In the event of rain, the volunteer day will be cancelled.
  • Please come prepared for outdoor work: wear long pants, long sleeves, close-toed shoes, and a hat. Wear clothing you are not concerned about getting dirty or snagged on thorny shrubs. Quick dry clothing material is best, as the vegetation and grasses can be quite wet from overnight dew. Wear layers to stay warm and to have the option to cool off if needed.
  • There is poison ivy in areas of the sanctuary so please be on the lookout if you are sensitive to this plant.
  • Mosquitoes and ticks are still active, so perform a self-check when possible.
  • We will provide all tools, but feel free to bring leather gloves or pruner tools if you have them.
  • Bring water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen, although we will have extras on hand.
  • There isn’t any running water available at the sanctuary so you may want to bring wipes or antibacterial gel.
  • We will meet at the parking area/kiosk located on 15 Mile Road between T Drive North and Q Drive North, at 21145 15 Mile Rd., Bellevue, MI 49021.

Feel free to enjoy the trails after the workday is complete and observe the birds and other wildlife that you are supporting through your hard work and time. We look forward to working with you!

Please RSVP to Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org if you plan to attend.
