Michigan Audubon is continuing to take a series of precautionary measures in response to COVID-19 to protect the most vulnerable members of our community, while still allowing those who choose to do so to continue to enjoy our many bird- and nature-centric programs.

Birding is a great activity that can be enjoyed safely during this pandemic but remember that not all of us may have the same level of comfort or agree upon what behavior is acceptable. We recommend we all take this advice from the American Birding Association’s COVID-19 Guidelines on Birding and Social Distancing, “People’s judgment of what is safe will vary. There is little to be gained from birders attacking each other on social media and elsewhere about perceived lapses in physical distancing, for example. However, thoughtful discussion, promotion, and modeling of one’s own pandemic birding practices are welcome and appropriate.”

Organization Headquarters (Okemos, MI)
The safety and health of our program participants, volunteers, staff, and community are our greatest priority as we support our state’s efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Michigan Audubon is committed to continuing the work of our mission throughout the state by adapting our outreach and education programs while minimizing the impacts of the pandemic. For purposes of emergency rules, orders, and directives issued by MDHHS, MIOSHA, and/or Governor Whitmer, designated core staff are conducting work remotely until further notice. The Okemos office is closed to the public until further notice.

Bird Sanctuaries (Statewide)
Whether you’re an advanced birder, are new to birdwatching, or anywhere in-between, we encourage you to utilize the recreational and therapeutic value of birds and their habitats throughout Michigan to lift your spirits and provide an outlet during times of stress. Michigan Audubon invites everyone who can safely do so to respectfully use the outdoor trails available at our bird sanctuaries from dawn to dusk.

Otis Cabin (Hastings, MI)
The Otis Cabin is closed for reservations through June 1, 2021. We are considering rentals on a case-by-case basis after June 1. Stay tuned to our website for updates, changes, and photos of our donor- and volunteer-powered projects at Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary!

Sanctuaries Stewardship Activities
When workdays at our signature bird sanctuaries resume this spring, staff and volunteer participation will be limited and subject to change in accordance with laws and regulations. If you plan to attend a scheduled workday, RSVP to Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. Learn more about becoming a volunteer steward at our sanctuaries here.

Whitefish Point Bird Observatory (Paradise, MI)

  • Owl Banding Presentations — We apologize, but live education demonstrations of our owl banding program will not be offered in 2021 due to COVID-related risks and restrictions.
  • The Owl’s Roost Gift Shop — The gift shop at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory will be closed to the public for the spring season due to renovation plans and complications of operating during the pandemic. The decision not to open certain facilities was not made lightly, and we apologize for any inconvenience this poses our members and visitors. Merchandise can be purchased online, 24/7, through the online store at michigan-audubon-store.square.site/. Here, you’ll find merchandise featuring both Michigan Audubon and Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, including newer, updated styles as well as old favorites!
  • Field Stations (Hawk Deck and Waterbird Shack) — You are welcome to visit the Hawk Deck and Waterbird Shack while visiting WPBO but must practice social distancing while doing so. Although not required, we encourage you to wear masks if you are in close proximity to other people, even if outdoors. If necessary, a capacity limit will be set for how many people can utilize the Hawk Deck simultaneously.

Thank you for your continued support!
