SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Michigan Motus Array: Exciting Detections in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Rich and Brenda Keith attended the annual meeting of Eastern Bird Banders in West Virginia. Stu MacKenzie from Bird Studies Canada spoke on the Motus Project that was launched in 2014. In Stu’s presentation he showed slides of Gray-cheeked Thrush banded in traditional and shade grown coffee plantations being detected at Motus stations going north\, until they reached Michigan. Stu’s observation “we need Motus stations in Michigan” was taken as a command by Rich. The Michigan Motus Array presently has 20 stations with 8 more funded and going up in 2025 plus more in the works. Rich and Brenda will speak to their experiences and findings since joining the Motus Project. \nLongtime Audubon Society of Kalamazoo members Rich and Brenda Keith began working with the research program at the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC) as volunteers in the mid-1980s. Both were eventually hired by the KNC in the bird banding program. That program expanded to include the Keiths’ 43-acre property near Vicksburg\, Michigan\, now known as the Pitsfield Banding Station. That site as well as the KNC and Fort Custer Training Center are part of the Kalamazoo Valley Bird Observatory under Rich’s direction. In addition to banding birds\, Rich and Brenda have also contributed to a variety of bird-related research projects\, the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas\, winter feeder surveys\, and Christmas Bird Counts. Both are certified hummingbird banders\, a designation achieved by very few in Michigan. In 2018\, they began work on the Motus Tower project across lower and upper Michigan. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 24\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. It’s helpful if you bring your own coffee cup. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance.\nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be available shortly before the meeting in the April newsletter and on our event calendar – https://kalamazooaudubon.org/calendar/. We will also be recording it for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Bird on the Move: Looking to the Past to Secure the Future of the Kirtland's Warbler
DESCRIPTION:On November 25\, Dr. Steve Roels will be presenting on what could be argued is truly a “State Bird” of Michigan\, the Kirtland’s Warbler. The Kirtland’s Warbler is a Great Lakes endemic species that summers and breeds in young jack pine forests\, primarily in Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula. It winters in scrub forests in the Bahamas. This species was nearly lost to extinction due to fire suppression in its very limited breeding habitat and nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds. \nThe removal of the Kirtland’s Warbler from the Federal endangered species list as a result of sustained conservation efforts is a victory for the bird and its champions. Yet threats to the species’ future\, including climate change and human development\, persist. Examining the deep history of Kirtland’s Warbler and its instinctive behaviors offers hope that the bird\, despite its fussy reputation\, can adapt to a changing planet. Unprecedented research projects are revealing how the warbler’s movement ecology has enabled its survival across millennia and what we must do to support the warbler as it navigates the new millennium. \nDr. Steve Roels is a conservation biologist with American Bird Conservancy\, currently serving as the Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director and Conservation Team Coordinator. He earned his MA from the University of Kansas in 2011\, studying population restoration of a rare prairie plant. He earned his PhD from Michigan State University in 2018\, studying bird ecology in tropical forest restorations. He has conducted field research in Michigan\, Kansas\, Texas\, Colorado\, Vietnam\, and Panama. His scientific work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Avian Conservation and Ecology; Restoration Ecology; and Agriculture\, Ecosystems\, and Environment. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, November 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Birdman of the Senate: Senator George P. McLean and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
DESCRIPTION:The Audubon Society of Kalamazoo’s 2024–2025 program series will commence on September 23 with some avian literature. Michigan author and historian\, Will McLean Greeley will present an overview of his book\, A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington: Senator George P. McLean\, Birdman of the Senate. The book is the story of how Connecticut’s George P. McLean helped establish lasting legal protections for birds\, overseeing passage of the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act\, landmark environmental protection legislation that is still in effect today. Greeley\, McLean’s great-great nephew\, puts McLean’s victory for birds in the context of his distinguished 45-year career marked by many acts of reform during a time of widespread corruption and political instability. \nWill McLean Greeley\, a resident of Midland\, Michigan\, grew up in Kalamazoo with a passion for American history\, politics\, and birds. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School\, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan and then a master’s degree from Michigan in archives administration. After retiring from a 35-year career in government and corporate market research\, he embarked upon a three-year research and writing journey to learn about his great-great uncle George P. McLean and his legacy. A Connecticut Yankee Goes to Washington is his first book. \nI have just finished Mr. Greeley’s book myself and can say his biography of Senator McLean is inspiring in terms of what one person could do in the cause of bird conservation and the impact of his efforts 100 years ago in the Progressive Era. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, September 23rd\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. This program is geared to all audiences\, and we enthusiastically invite families and nature lovers of any age to join us! Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance of the building. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly to all members before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n~ Dave Lemberg\, Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Programs Chair

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — The Meadowlark Conundrum: Why many of our restored grasslands may not have grassland birds
DESCRIPTION:Grassland birds are in the steepest decline of any other habitat group in North America. In response to the continued loss of these incredible bird species and their habitat\, many well-intentioned conservationists have reconstructed prairies to provide habitat for grassland specialists. But are their efforts working\, and if not\, how come? An ongoing breeding bird monitoring program on Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy preserves may shed some light on these challenges. We’ll explore this conundrum and the wider efforts to save charismatic species like Bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks during this joint presentation.\nThe presenters for this program are Mitch Lettow\, Stewardship Director for the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy\, and Dr. Sharon Gill\, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – “The Great Colorado Chicken Trip”\nMonday\, March 28: 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nYes\, chickens! Chickens are birds\, too! And especially interesting if they are Lesser Prairie- Chickens or Greater Prairie-Chickens or their relatives: Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and more. There is no better place in North America to see native grouse and “chicken-like” birds than the state of Colorado – and no better time to find them than in April. This year we are going just four days early\, onMarch 28! \n\nKip Miller is a consummate naturalist\, birder\, and presenter and has been with the Berrien County Parks at Love Creek Nature Center for 34 years. He will take us on an armchair tour of Colorado from the eastern plains to the intermountain parks and mountain ridges to see Lesser and Greater Prairie- Chickens\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and a few other not-so-chickenish birds. \n\nBesides his work with the Berrien County Parks\, Kip enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for birds by hosting\, organizing\, and guiding birding events and tours – both close to home and in Colorado and other places. You may discover the urge to see more. \n\nPlease come join us at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce our dishwashing. \n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nMonday\, February 22: 7:00 PM\nDo you think the American Woodcock is a strange bird? It doesn’t even live in the woods! Or because of its unusually short legs\, its unusually chubby body\, or its unusually long beak\, let’s not even get into its sexual behaviors. Yes\, it is a strange bird. But like many of us\, it does not like cold weather (the woodcocks went south). Maybe that is why Jordyn is available to come and speak to us in February. \nJordyn is the Wildlife Outreach Technician for the DNR. Raised in a small northernMichigan town “where the main street is lined with tractors and there is only one flashing traffic light\,” she is now running the PureMichigan Hunt program and is the communications contact for Southwest Michigan. In February that has her out doing school programs and speaking to Audubon groups about strange birds. \nJoin us\, this bird will warm your hearts\, on Monday\, February 22\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Program
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – Michigan Wetlands Loss Mitigation\nMonday\, November 23\, 7:30 PM\nMichigan’s total wetland loss since 1978 is estimated at 41\,000 acres\, with the rate of decline slowing since then\,” wrote Garret Ellison in the Kalamazoo Gazette\, September 20\, 2015. Eleven counties in eastern Michigan have lost 80% to 85% of their wetlands. Bird and wildlife habitat\, water quality\, and water level fluctuations are significantly impacted. What can be done about it?\nPeter Wyckoff is a Biosystems and Agricultural Engineer who does wetland delineations\, GPS surveys\, and HydroCAD modeling to assist State or Federal road builders and land developers meet the requirements for reducing the impact\, or to create compensation for the loss of wetlands. He is mitigating the loss of natural habitat to achieve a no net loss of wetlands habitat. What gets investigated? — Natural stream channel design\, hydraulic engineering\, and design of aquaponics systems. Pete will help us understand what that means. Because of the Federal Clean Water Act\, development and construction projects that impact a wetland are required to mitigate the damage by creating a wetland of equal or greater functioning capacity. This is environmental habitat protection at the basics.\nPete’s work stretches through more states than Michigan\, but he is a Michigan State graduate and works out of the Ducks Unlimited office in Ann Arbor\, so he will have lots of Michigan stories to tell us.\nYou may remember Pete was scheduled to present this program last February. He became ill\, and we had to call on Josh Haas to bring in a program at the last minute. Well\, we get another chance to hear about this vital environmental issue.\nJoin us Monday\, November 23\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Meeting - "A Visual Exploration of North America"
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nOct 26 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm \n MONTHLY MEETING: “A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF NORTH AMERICA” \nCharles St. Charles will be at the October 26 Audubon Society of Kalamazoo (ASK) meeting to explain his upcoming project. Come to the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program will start at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM (please bring your own coffee/tea mug). Guests and the general public are welcome. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrances to the building.\n Read more in ASK’s own words:\n \n \n\nWow\, this is too big for me to explain. Here is what Charles St. Charles says\, “The project I am going to describe in my presentation may be the largest project ever attempted by a single photographer. I am visiting all 15 of the major eco-regions in the continent and featuring each one in a separate edition of a digital publication. At the same time I am leaving time-lapse cameras behind\, largely hosted by national and state parks. So when I am done I’ll have 90 cameras in the field that are shooting time-lapse\, and I’ll be able to put up a map of the entire continent with near real-time images of each region. You’ll be able to tap on any region in the continent and see what is going on in the natural world in that region.”\nThis is a personal project for Charles. He is a professional photographer. He is launching a digital publication that will feature a different season in each eco-region of the North American continent with each issue. During his shoots\, Charles finds hosts for his time-lapse cameras. Of course the photographs are finding other uses: park visitor centers\, in studies of controlled burns\, and desert pollinators.\nSomeday\, Charles hopes\, we will be able to walk through a floor map of the North American continent watching on monitors as the seasons display their natural wonders in that region.\nYou get a preview!
