SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Chimney Swifts
DESCRIPTION:Chimney Swifts with Linnea Rowse \nA 5-inch long “flying cigar” with wings\, Chimney Swifts are a fascinating species that is dependent upon human structures for their breeding and migration habits. During spring and fall migration\, Chimney Swifts gather by the thousands to shelter together overnight in roosting locations – most often in large chimneys of older churches\, schools\, and factories. Come to learn about Chimney Swifts\, their role within the ecosystem\, why their population is in steep decline\, how they depend upon humans\, and what you can do to help this species. Following the presentation\, attendees are invited to caravan to a nearby known Chimney Swift roost\, where at dusk\, a swirling “tornado” of swifts will spiral down into their nighttime roost. \nLinnea Rowse is the Conservation Program Coordinator for Michigan Audubon\, overseeing the Bird-friendly Communities program\, including species-specific conservation efforts. Linnea also oversees stewardship and habitat management at Michigan Audubon’s bird sanctuaries\, and other conservation projects. Linnea received her B.S. in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from the University of Rhode Island\, and her Master’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife from The Ohio State University. She has worked for many different non-profit organizations and researchers\, always focused on bird conservation\, ecology\, and habitat restoration\, but until last year had not experienced the wonder and thrill of watching a Chimney Swift “tornado” swirl down into a chimney. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators with Erin Oswald \nIn 2017\, Fenner Conservancy constructed an exhibit to raise awareness in the community about pollinator conservation through the raising and rearing of monarch butterflies — the Monarch House. Since then\, more than 300 monarch butterflies have been reared\, checked for parasites\, tagged\, and released. The Monarch House was built to give these important pollinators a good head-start in life and the energy to make it to their overwintering grounds in Mexico. Fenner is involved with many citizen science programs like Project Monarch Health\, Monarch Watch\, and Monarch Waystation to help increase the declining monarch population and educate the greater Lansing region about the conservation of monarchs and other pollinators.  \n\nErin Oswald is the volunteer coordinator and citizen science program coordinator at Fenner Nature Center. She oversees programs such as Project FeederWatch and all Monarch House activities. She has been working at Fenner since April 2018. Erin holds a B.S. in fisheries and wildlife from Michigan State University. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon\, Christopher Hart of HartScapes\, and Dan Auer of Woldumar Nature Center for a daylong workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk right at the Michigan Audubon office to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype Native Plant Nursery in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery. Participants will also have the opportunity to shop and explore at Wildtype during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. \nParticipants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kickstart a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \n If you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nWorkshop Agenda: \n8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Registration and Refreshments \n9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Workshop indoor session \n12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch (provided) \n1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Wildtype Tour and Native Plant Sale \nCost: $30 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $40 for non-members of either organization \nClick here to register for the workshop. \nChristopher Hart graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Landscape and Nursery Management and has been operating HartScapes since 2012. He will be sharing his knowledge of native landscape design\, the importance of selecting local genotypes when purchasing plants or seed\, and will share new plans for demonstration gardens at the Michigan Audubon office building\, which will showcase various garden types from Michigan Audubon’s “Michigan Native Garden Design For the Birds” booklet. \nDan Auer\, of Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing\, will share the nature center’s plans for a new educational native garden installation\, and how the nature center utilizes outdoor spaces to foster children’s engagement with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Swifts in the City: Presentation and Roost Watch
DESCRIPTION:Enjoying birds doesn’t always mean heading to the woods or shoreline. Join Michigan Audubon on August 22 at 7:30 p.m. for an in-depth look at Chimney Swifts\, an urban bird species that has suffered steep population declines in recent decades. \nOnce nesting in caves\, cliff faces\, and hollow trees\, this species has become dependent on man-made structures to simulate this habitat — most often opting for large chimneys. These aerial insectivores spend their days eating and bathing mid-flight\, returning to the roost at night to sleep. \nMichigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse will share a general overview of Chimney Swifts\, causes for their declining population\, ways you can help\, citizen science projects\, and more. \nFollowing the presentation\, we will caravan to a nearby roost\, where you can observe hundreds of Chimney Swifts flocking together in a tornado-like formation before dropping into the chimney for the night. \nThis free event will begin at the Michigan Audubon office\, located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864. \nIf you have any questions please contact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Safe Passage and Window Collisions with Heidi Trudell
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of millions of healthy birds are killed each year when they collide with glass at residences and office buildings. This is a serious problem. Bird populations are facing steep declines\, and aside from habitat loss and cats\, glass is the leading cause of death. Join Heidi in exploring the myriad solutions that can save birds\, starting right at home. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a new citizen science project to take part in? Michigan Audubon is seeking volunteers to survey Chimney Swift roosts across the state during fall migration. Surveying for swifts is fun\, easy\, and suitable for all ages. \nMonitoring takes place at dusk as potentially hundreds of swifts come together in a tornado-like flock before entering the roost for the night. Finding potential roost locations can be an adventure in itself and starts with looking for large\, uncapped chimneys on historical buildings\, old factories\, schools\, churches\, courthouses\, or libraries. \nMichigan Audubon will provide training for those interested in monitoring roosts on August 7 at 8 p.m. The training session will begin at the MA office (located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Okemos\, MI 48864) and proceed to a nearby roost for participants to get a firsthand look at these birds. \nAlthough attracted to urban areas with high human population densities\, this species is often overlooked and its distribution and numbers in Michigan are poorly understood. By surveying these roosts\, we hope to gather information to help support conservation of critical roosting structures in Michigan. \nThe annual national survey occurs on the second weekends in August and September (Friday – Sunday nights)\, but we are looking for volunteers to survey at any time throughout August and September. Surveys begin 30 minutes before sunset and end when the last swift enters the chimney. \nLearn more about conducting the surveys\, find data sheets\, and enter survey data at www.michiganaudubon.org/bfc/chsw. Contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse with questions at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:PUMA Spotlight Event: How to Be a Good Purple Martin Landlord Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon is pleased to welcome Penny Briscoe to host the workshop\, “How to be a Good Purple Martin Landlord.” Briscoe is a local expert with more than 25 years’ experience. The workshop will be held at the Michigan Audubon office. Learn how to acquire and install suitable housing\, prepare nests for spring arrival\, and perform regular nest checks to ensure the survival of young birds. Briscoe will also share useful internet resources and discuss recording and submitting data. \nFour new purple martin houses on public property have been installed in the Lansing area\, with several more to come this spring. Volunteers are needed to monitor activity at these houses to ensure the birds are safe and thriving. If you don’t have a purple martin house yourself\, this is a great opportunity to “adopt” a colony! If you are interested in adopting a Lansing colony\, this workshop will provide excellent training on how to get started. Please contact us if you would like to adopt a purple martin house near you. \nPlease register for this free event: \n Register
