SUMMARY:COMMUNITY-Nature Photography: A Close-Up Look at the Birds\, Bugs and Other Critters in our Local Preserves
DESCRIPTION:What to do with ourselves upon retirement? This is a question pondered by so many of us\, whether in the past\, present\, or future. January meeting speakers are Audubon Society of Kalamazoo members\, Jeanne and Mel Church\, who will share their approach to the retirement conundrum. Learn how they got started on a photo adventure after completing fulfilling professional lives. In addition to demonstrating some of the equipment that makes this adventure possible\, they will share the pictures themselves. We will see stunning bird photos\, as well as images of butterflies\, dragonflies\, frogs\, and mammals. While these nature photographers travel all over the United States as well as abroad\, this presentation will focus on their observations from preserves in the greater Kalamazoo area.

SUMMARY:Program: Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise
DESCRIPTION:Join Craig Sherwood for the fourth presentation of ASK’s new program season as he discusses “Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise.” There are parts of this planet where change happens so slowly it can be measured more easily over millennia versus decades or days.  The Mojave Desert was until recently\, one of these ancient refuges from change; an ecosystem where the flora and fauna have become so highly specialized living in nearly uninhabitable conditions they often lack the ability to adapt to a dynamic situation. In our current age\, the iconic desert tortoise is facing a daunting challenge as it is confronted with swelling numbers of humans and the predators that prosper in their wake.  The common raven (Corvus corax) is one of these predators and the species is experiencing something of a golden age as human densities continue to increase in one of North America’s most inhospitable landscapes. \nYou will be in for a crash course on the biology and life history of the Mojave Desert Tortoise and explore how it has become intricately entwined with the explosive success of the largest species in the Corvid family.  We will look at what is being done now and where new techniques and technology are taking us as we attempt to reframe how we think about the most intelligent and opportunistic avian species in the Southwest.  What we learn in the desert may very well help to prepare us for tackling future corvid-related challenges right here at home. \nCraig Sherwood has been working in the field since 2010 after completing his undergraduate studies in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology at Michigan State University.  Seasonal work has allowed him to live and work in places from the Canadian Rockies and Interior Alaska to the scorching landscapes of the Mojave Desert. Years of work with desert tortoises has inevitably led to an interest in ravens.  He now serves as an advisor and contractor to Hardshell Labs.  Hardshell Labs is currently leading the field by spearheading the development of a variety of innovative\, non-lethal aversive conditioning techniques for dealing with raven problems. \nYou are invited to join us to meet and hear Craig Sherwood on January 22\, 2018\, at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:Those Amazing Birds Program
DESCRIPTION:Join Ed Post for the third presentation of Audubon Society Kalamazoo’s 2017-2018 program season as he focuses on “Those Amazing Birds.”  This illustrated program looks at the amazing diversity and fascinating natural history of North American birds through the eyes of a dedicated bird photographer. We’ll look at the specialized anatomy of birds\, how they care for their young\, and how they survive in extremes like the frozen tundra and blistering desert. The poetic beauty of birds will color the informative narrative about our feathered friends. \nEd Post has been a serious photographer for over 30 years. He specializes in landscape and nature photography\, but also worked as a part-time newspaper and sports photographer for 15 years.  Ed frequently teaches photography classes\, leads photography trips\, and conducts workshops.  He is widely published and he displays his work at local galleries in West Michigan. You can see some of Ed’s images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/edpost/. \nYou are invited to meet and hear Ed on November 27 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – “The Great Colorado Chicken Trip”\nMonday\, March 28: 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nYes\, chickens! Chickens are birds\, too! And especially interesting if they are Lesser Prairie- Chickens or Greater Prairie-Chickens or their relatives: Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and more. There is no better place in North America to see native grouse and “chicken-like” birds than the state of Colorado – and no better time to find them than in April. This year we are going just four days early\, onMarch 28! \n\nKip Miller is a consummate naturalist\, birder\, and presenter and has been with the Berrien County Parks at Love Creek Nature Center for 34 years. He will take us on an armchair tour of Colorado from the eastern plains to the intermountain parks and mountain ridges to see Lesser and Greater Prairie- Chickens\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and a few other not-so-chickenish birds. \n\nBesides his work with the Berrien County Parks\, Kip enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for birds by hosting\, organizing\, and guiding birding events and tours – both close to home and in Colorado and other places. You may discover the urge to see more. \n\nPlease come join us at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce our dishwashing. \n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nMonday\, February 22: 7:00 PM\nDo you think the American Woodcock is a strange bird? It doesn’t even live in the woods! Or because of its unusually short legs\, its unusually chubby body\, or its unusually long beak\, let’s not even get into its sexual behaviors. Yes\, it is a strange bird. But like many of us\, it does not like cold weather (the woodcocks went south). Maybe that is why Jordyn is available to come and speak to us in February. \nJordyn is the Wildlife Outreach Technician for the DNR. Raised in a small northernMichigan town “where the main street is lined with tractors and there is only one flashing traffic light\,” she is now running the PureMichigan Hunt program and is the communications contact for Southwest Michigan. In February that has her out doing school programs and speaking to Audubon groups about strange birds. \nJoin us\, this bird will warm your hearts\, on Monday\, February 22\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee cup. \nQuestions? Contact: Larry Boutelle\, 269-372-0678

SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Program
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – Michigan Wetlands Loss Mitigation\nMonday\, November 23\, 7:30 PM\nMichigan’s total wetland loss since 1978 is estimated at 41\,000 acres\, with the rate of decline slowing since then\,” wrote Garret Ellison in the Kalamazoo Gazette\, September 20\, 2015. Eleven counties in eastern Michigan have lost 80% to 85% of their wetlands. Bird and wildlife habitat\, water quality\, and water level fluctuations are significantly impacted. What can be done about it?\nPeter Wyckoff is a Biosystems and Agricultural Engineer who does wetland delineations\, GPS surveys\, and HydroCAD modeling to assist State or Federal road builders and land developers meet the requirements for reducing the impact\, or to create compensation for the loss of wetlands. He is mitigating the loss of natural habitat to achieve a no net loss of wetlands habitat. What gets investigated? — Natural stream channel design\, hydraulic engineering\, and design of aquaponics systems. Pete will help us understand what that means. Because of the Federal Clean Water Act\, development and construction projects that impact a wetland are required to mitigate the damage by creating a wetland of equal or greater functioning capacity. This is environmental habitat protection at the basics.\nPete’s work stretches through more states than Michigan\, but he is a Michigan State graduate and works out of the Ducks Unlimited office in Ann Arbor\, so he will have lots of Michigan stories to tell us.\nYou may remember Pete was scheduled to present this program last February. He became ill\, and we had to call on Josh Haas to bring in a program at the last minute. Well\, we get another chance to hear about this vital environmental issue.\nJoin us Monday\, November 23\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee cup.\nContact: Larry Boutelle\, 269-372-0678 \n

SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Meeting - "A Visual Exploration of North America"
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nOct 26 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm \n MONTHLY MEETING: “A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF NORTH AMERICA” \nCharles St. Charles will be at the October 26 Audubon Society of Kalamazoo (ASK) meeting to explain his upcoming project. Come to the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program will start at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM (please bring your own coffee/tea mug). Guests and the general public are welcome. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrances to the building.\n Read more in ASK’s own words:\n \n \n\nWow\, this is too big for me to explain. Here is what Charles St. Charles says\, “The project I am going to describe in my presentation may be the largest project ever attempted by a single photographer. I am visiting all 15 of the major eco-regions in the continent and featuring each one in a separate edition of a digital publication. At the same time I am leaving time-lapse cameras behind\, largely hosted by national and state parks. So when I am done I’ll have 90 cameras in the field that are shooting time-lapse\, and I’ll be able to put up a map of the entire continent with near real-time images of each region. You’ll be able to tap on any region in the continent and see what is going on in the natural world in that region.”\nThis is a personal project for Charles. He is a professional photographer. He is launching a digital publication that will feature a different season in each eco-region of the North American continent with each issue. During his shoots\, Charles finds hosts for his time-lapse cameras. Of course the photographs are finding other uses: park visitor centers\, in studies of controlled burns\, and desert pollinators.\nSomeday\, Charles hopes\, we will be able to walk through a floor map of the North American continent watching on monitors as the seasons display their natural wonders in that region.\nYou get a preview!
