SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: The Great Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Nesting of 1878
DESCRIPTION:The community of Petoskey\, Michigan will remember the now extinct Passenger pigeon with “The Great Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Nesting of 1878” free public events during the week of June 15\, 2026. The vision is: to recall by word\, experience\, and art the tragic story of the wild Passenger pigeon in Petoskey\, thereby fostering a greater love for our land\, water\, and wildlife. \nActivities include art and history talks\, nature and bird walks and will close with the unveiling of a cast bronze sculpture dedicated to “The Great Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Nesting of 1878.” Artist Todd McGrain is the sculptor and through his “Lost Bird Project\,” he has created permanent public memorials to birds driven to extinction\, combining visual arts and storytelling to raise awareness of human impact on the natural world. He will be present throughout the week at events. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon - Saturday Morning Birding Walks
DESCRIPTION:The Petoskey Regional Audubon Society invites you to birding walks at Little Traverse Conservancy’s Waldron Fen Preserve on Saturday mornings during the month of May at 8am. \nSpot migratory and resident bird species on this hike throughout a variety of habitats led by trip leader Brooke Knickerbocker – an enthusiastic birder and high school student. This preserve has nearly 2 miles of trails\, two small ponds\, a viewing platform\, and is a sizable wetland-fen complex. Expect this walk to take two to three hours. \nWe will meet in the dirt parking lot next to the Waldron Fen Nature Preserve sign off Banwell Road (look for the LTC sign). The parking area is unpaved and offers no restroom facilities. Bug spray is strongly encouraged. Trails can be muddy. Proper footwear is a must. The trail is a loop and there is no short-cut back. \nThe Fen truly is a magical spot with 148 acres. For example\, on one morning in May 2025 our small group called 51 species and 137 individual birds. The terrain is uneven\, sometimes wet\, and bug spray is always recommended. As you can imagine\, birds love this kind of habitat; but it’s not for everyone. \n  \nNotes:  \n\nRSVP is not necessary to attend the bird walk. Just show up.\nBring binoculars if you have them. If not\, loaner pairs will be available.\nBeginning birders always welcome.\nNo pets. No smoking.\nDress for conditions and insect protection.\nDirections – From Alanson\, head east on M-68 to Banwell Road. Turn right. Continue on Banwell 3.3 miles to entrance on left.\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon Society - Sportsman's Park Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Petoskey Regional Audubon Society invites you to a birding walk at Sportsman’s Park in East Jordan\, on Friday\, May 15 from 8am-9:30am. During this walk we will explore multiple habitat types.  Participants will meet at the Sportsman’s Park parking area.  Please bring your binoculars. Betty Simon will be the trip leader\, she is a member of Petoskey Audubon and is excited to act as a guide to one of her favorite birding spots. \nThis morning walk will allow participants to compare and contrast the number of species and individual birds to our Wednesday evening walks. \nThe first area we will visit is the platform overlooking the mouth of the Jordan River.  This location features a deep river channel bordered by mudflats and cattail marshes.  The area usually holds many dabbling ducks\, geese\, swans\, herons (potential for Great Egret)\, Sandhill Cranes\, coots\, and others.  Shorebirds may be patrolling the mudflats and river edges. \nThe second area we will visit is the new Don & Eileen Klein Nature Trail.  This walk includes some scrubby hardwood forest and an extensive boardwalk through a large cattail marsh.  Here there should be plenty of blackbirds\, sparrows\, and the potential for rails.  Raptors including Bald Eagles\, Red-tailed Hawks\, Red-shouldered Hawks\, Northern Harrier\, Osprey\, Merlin and others are a possibility in any area.  This walk should allow participants to see many of Michigan’s spectacular resident and migratory bird species! \nNotes:  \n\nRSVP is not necessary to attend the bird walk. Just show up.\nPlease do not bring pets as these can disrupt both the behavior of the birds and the birding experience for others.\nBring binoculars if you have them. If not\, loaner pairs will be available.\nRestrooms are available at the parking area.\nBeginning birders always welcome.\nNo pets. No smoking.\nChildren welcome with adult supervision.\nDress for conditions and insect protection.\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Audubon Bird Walk at Oden Fish Hatchery
DESCRIPTION:Explore the trails at the Oden Fish Hatchery in search of migrating and nesting birds. We will bird the evergreen and deciduous woodlands\, as well as ponds\, wetland habitats\, and open areas near the hatchery buildings. Most trails are paved\, flat and broad. In past years\, we’ve averaged 40 species on this walk.\n\nThe walk begins at the parking lot and we cover a loop that takes about 2 hours. If you don’t have 2 hours\, no problem! The trails are easy to navigate and you are free to turn around at any point in the walk.\n\nGood news! All of the renovations to the parking lot and visitors center are complete. (Last year the group was bedeviled by reconstruction in the parking area and visitors center.) Oden Fish Hatchery\, 3377 Oden Road\, (US 31 North entrance opposite Crooked Lake)\n\nReminder: No pets allowed on this walk. Children welcome with responsible adult.\n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon Society - Bear River Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council staff and the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society members for two guided birding walks along the Bear River this spring. Supported by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation’s Little Traverse Bay Restoration Fund\, these events are part of a broader effort to connect people with the Bear River corridor and support ongoing restoration work through the Healing the Bear Initiative. \nWhether you’re brand new to birding or have years of experience\, all are welcome to join us in slowing down\, observing\, and appreciating the birds and habitats that make this ecosystem unique. Early May is an ideal time for birding. Brightly colored male birds are singing to attract a mate and establish a territory. The leaves on the trees are just opening up so it is easier to see the birds. \nOn the birding walk on May 18 we will walk along the Bear River to see and hear birds. It will take place 8:30am to 10:10am. We will meet at the Bear River Picnic Shelter. Parking is available on Quaintance Ave\, Petoskey.  The walk is free\, but please RSVP by clicking here. \nEvent Details:  \n\nWear Outdoor clothing (dress for the weather)\nWear Sturdy shoes\nBring Reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug\nBring Insect Repellent\nNo pets or smoking\nBring your Binoculars (a limited number will be available to borrow)\nRestrooms are available at the parking area\n\nWe’re grateful to Bearcub Outfitters for supporting our Bear River Birding events! Participants will receive a coupon for 15% off binoculars\, a great opportunity for first-time birders or anyone looking to upgrade their gear! \nCome explore the Bear River with us and discover how birds can offer new perspectives on the health and beauty of this important watershed.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Petoskey Regional Audubon Society - Beginner Birding along the Bear River
\nThe Beginner Birding Walk on May 11 will provide tips and recommendations for those just getting into bird watching\, followed by a walk along the Bear River to see and hear birds. It will take place 8:30am to 10:10am. We will meet at the Bear River Picnic Shelter. Parking is available on Quaintance Ave\, Petoskey.  The walk is free\, but please RSVP by clicking here. \n  \nEvent Details:  \n\nWear Outdoor clothing (dress for the weather)\nWear Sturdy shoes\nBring Reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug\nBring Insect Repellent\nNo pets or smoking.\nBring your Binoculars (a limited number will be available to borrow)\nRestrooms are available at the parking area\n\nWe’re grateful to Bearcub Outfitters for supporting our Bear River Birding events! Participants will receive a coupon for 15% off binoculars\, a great opportunity for first-time birders or anyone looking to upgrade their gear! \nCome explore the Bear River with us and discover how birds can offer new perspectives on the health and beauty of this important watershed. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event.
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Woods & Stream Birding near Cross Village – Petoskey Regional Audubon Society\nFriday\, July 24\, 2015\, 10:00 am \nLeaders: June Summers & Tracy Datlen \nDetails: \nThe owner (and new PRAS member) of this 100-acre pristine property of dense woods\, wetland and stream has invited Petoskey Audubon members on a very special bird walk and nature outing. Due to the undisturbed nature of this property there are abundant native plants in addition to birds. On this walk we will focus on a short 1/2-mile loop near the stream and wetland. We will make frequent stops of about 15 minutes to allow the birds to come in to us. Bring a folding chair and/or spotting scope. The best birding at this location is stationary. There is a lot of birding by ear. The location is at a private home with limited parking. For directions and further details\, please contact Tracy Datlen at tadatl@live.com. Due to parking constraints and the sensitive nature of the property (among other things\, there’s an active turtle nest in the driveway) some coordination of cars and participants is required. Carpooling recommended. Optional dutch-treat lunch at an area restaurant after the walk. \nQuestions: \nContact Tracy Datlen
