The keynote speaker will be Gene Jacobs\, lead researcher and owner of the consulting firm\, Raptor Services\, and the Linwood Springs Research Station near Stevens Point\, Wisc. In “Snowy Owl Winter Habitat Use\,” Jacobs will share his research which uses solar-powered transmitters to record owl locations in three dimensions — latitude\, longitude\, and altitude. During several optional sessions throughout the fest\, Jacobs will discuss what he has discovered over 30 years of banding Northern Saw-whet Owls\, share the results of 45 years of studying Red-shouldered Hawks nesting ecology\, and explain how and why Merlins are expanding their range. \nThe Morning Plenary Speaker Josh Haas will show his popular “Raptor Migration and Conquering ID: Using Video to Make Raptor ID a Snap!” The Evening Plenary Session\, which can be attended separately from the daytime talks\, features renowned wildlife artist and falconer Glen McCune from Petoskey\, Mich. who will bring one or more of his live birds. \nBreak-out sessions feature other excellent speakers\, including Joseph Youngman’s “Waterbird Migration Over Lake Superior” an explanation of various waterbird species pathways through Lake Superior\, and much more. \nOwl Banding and Constellation Discovery will also take place at the Guest House of Headlands Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City on the evenings of April 6 and 7. \nRegistration for the Mackinaw Raptor Fest opens in early January 2018. SUMMARY:Mackinaw Raptor Fest
DESCRIPTION:Of all bird types\, raptors and waterbirds most excite people and fire the imagination with their wonder\, majesty\, special adaptations\, and abilities. A US Fish and Wildlife Service public survey found that more people travel to see them than any other type of birds. \nMackinaw City\, Michigan\, located at the junction of two peninsulas and two Great Lakes\, creates a unique confluence of migrating birds every spring and fall. The Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch (MSRW)\, a non-profit organization\, was founded in January 2014 primarily to research and educate people about raptors. It is building upon 20 years of owl research and three previous years of hawk counts in this region by independent biologists who largely volunteered their time. \nIn 2016\, MSRW hired eight contractors to conduct research on migrating birds and educate the public. In early April 2016\, it launched the first Mackinaw Raptor Fest\, attended by 120 people. Based on its overwhelming success\, MSRW decided to continue the Fest as a bird-watching and educational opportunity. \nMackinaw Raptor Fest \n* Provides an entertaining and educational showcase to promote public awareness \nand knowledge of raptors and waterbirds and the significance of Mackinaw City and the \nStraits of Mackinac during migration. \n* Promotes positive public attitudes towards raptors and waterbirds and their importance to the environment. \n* Aims to become an internationally renowned annual festival that will generate ongoing ecotourism revenue for the Petoskey/Harbor Springs/Mackinaw City area\, new sponsorship for research on raptors and waterbirds\, and net proceeds to further that research. \nClick here for more information.
