SUMMARY:OWASHTANONG ISLANDS AUDUBON SOCIETY & MUSKEGON COUNTY NATURE CLUB — There and back again: avian navigation and migration
DESCRIPTION:Description: Many species of birds in the temperate zone are long-distance travelers that make twice-yearly journeys between their breeding and wintering grounds. This program will review the costs and benefits to birds of migration\, some of the spectacular journeys made by some birds\, and the various ways that birds find their way during migration including following other birds\, using land features and coastlines as guides\, using the position of the sun if they travel by day or the stars if they travel at night\, the geomagnetic field of the earth\, odors\, and inherited navigation. \nSpeaker Bio: Michael P. Lombardo is a Professor Emeritus of Biology at Grand Valley State University. He earned his B.S. in Zoology at The Ohio State University\, an M.S. in Zoology and a Ph.D. in Ecology at Rutgers University and was a Junior Fellow in the Michigan Society of Fellows at the University of Michigan. During his 30-year career at GVSU\, he taught classes in Evolution\, General Biology\, Human Evolution\, Human Sexuality\, Ornithology\, Vertebrate Natural History\, and Wildlife Management. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society. Among his over 60 publications in peer-reviewed science journals are papers on various aspects of the biology of Tree Swallows\, Eastern and Mountain Bluebirds\, European Starlings\, and House Sparrows. \nThe Owashtanong Islands Audubon Society and Muskegon County Nature Club offer educational and informative lectures and fellowship at meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month\, September through May\, at 6 p.m. at the Loutit District Library (407 Columbus Ave.\, Grand Haven\, MI 49417). \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:Martha Mott Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Mott Sanctuary 9/12/23. Unit 1 middle of unit looking west. Photo by Chad Machinski \nHello! \nWe are having a Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary Volunteer Workday on Friday\, October 18th\, from 9am to 12pm! We will continue to chip away at Autumn Olive and other woody plants in the prairie. This workday will be Conservation Manager Chad Machinski; he will outline the scope of work for everyone and make sure everyone understands the goals of the day. Please bring your own hand tools for this workday. If you have power tools such as a chainsaw or brush cutter\, along with proper personal protective equipment\, please bring those if you would like. We may not use all power tools brought. \nWe will keep everyone notified of any changes to the workday due to weather. Thank you all for the work that you do! With your help\, Martha Mott will become the savanna it wants to be. \nPlease come dressed and supplied appropriately for working outdoors in the cold\, this includes: gloves\, closed toed shoes\, pants and jacket. The workday will be cancelled if there is inclement weather or poor air quality. \nWe are looking forward to seeing you there! \nMartha Mott Sanctuary is located on 44th Avenue in Mattawan between 24th Street and Woodview Drive. \nMartha Mott Sanctuary comprises 80 acres and is believed to have been Oak Savanna prior to European settlement. Since then\, sections of the property have been grazed and farmed. Michigan Audubon is working towards restoring sections of this sanctuary to Oak Savanna\, characterized by fire and a sparse Oak canopy. \nFor specific questions regarding the workday\, contact Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org \nMichigan Audubon connects birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation\, education\, and research efforts in the state of Michigan
