SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: At Home with Literati - Lee van der Voo & Rebecca Hardin
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY\, OCTOBER 12th\, 2020\n7:00p.m. | Zoom\n\n\n\nLiterati is pleased to welcome Lee van der Voo in support of As the World Burns. She’ll be joined in conversation by professor Rebecca D. Hardin\, and in partnership with Literati Bookstore.\n\nWhen 21 youth activists filed Juliana v. United States\, they asserted that the government’s continued negligence of the environment constituted a violation of their rights to life\, liberty\, and property. In As the World Burns\, Lee van der Voo follows the still-evolving legal case as she tells the plaintiffs’ stories\, all against the backdrop of the current climate-related crises and the mass protests happening and around the world. Granted unparalleled access to the plaintiffs and their legal team\, van der Voo reveals the human side of the climate crisis\, the dire effects of decades of inaction\, and the reasons why tackling our environmental issues in the courts is possibly our last real hope for meaningful intervention. This book is a call to arms for all of us\, young and old alike.

SUMMARY:Fall Workdays at Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:At Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary this fall\, volunteers will help us to prepare areas of meadow and woodland for continued restoration activities. We will focus on cutting and treating invasive woody plants such as black locust and multiflora rose\, in preparation for spring 2021 prescribed burns and additional native plant additions. \nNo experience necessary! Please come prepared for outdoor work\, dressing for the weather; wear non-cotton layers\, long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toed boots (hiking boots or rubber boots work well)\, and a warm hat and gloves. Bring leather work gloves\, water\, and snacks\, although we will have some on hand to share. This event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the evening before. \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 with any questions or to RSVP. \nOtis Farm Bird Sanctuary is located at 3560 Havens Rd.\, Hastings\, MI 49058. \nDirections: From Hastings\, follow M-43 west\, and continue to stay on M-43 as the road turns south. After 4 miles\, turn right onto Goodwill Road. Turn left onto Havens Road\, and the bird sanctuary entrance (parking and trailhead) is located at about 0.6 miles. \nImportant Changes to Sanctuary Workdays in Response to COVID-19 \nOut of an abundance of caution and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19\, we will be limiting workdays to eight volunteers. Now more than ever\, it will be important to RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse to ensure that we do not exceed the number of people that can safely work together on a project. We will take volunteers in the order their RSVPs are received. In the event that we have more than eight volunteers show up on a workday\, participants who have not RSVPed may be asked to leave. For the safety of all participants\, all volunteers must follow the wellness guidelines (provided below) at all times. We hope that these additional steps will not deter potential volunteers from doing their part for birds and the habitat that they depend on. \nWELLNESS GUIDELINES\n— Please stay home if you are not feeling well.\n— Cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue and wash your hands immediately afterward.\n— Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water. If no soap is available\, use a hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol content.\n— Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.\n— Practice social distancing\, maintaining a distance of at least six feet from your fellow volunteers. \nMichigan Audubon will continue to follow and adhere to recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Any additional changes to our programs and activities will be posted on our website\, www.michiganaudubon.org. General inquiries may be directed to Michigan Audubon at birds@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Michigan LCV Virtual Gala "Equity and the Environment"
DESCRIPTION:Senator Peters has been a force to be reckoned with in D.C.\, fighting hard to protect Michiganders’ right to clean air and water. He recognizes the threat that PFAS and lead in water poses to Michigan’s communities and has been a fierce advocate for these issues in Congress. He and many others pushed forward legislation to aid funding in Flint’s drinking water infrastructure and health care needs which helped thousands of residents during the Flint water crisis. In 2014 we were proud to award Senator Peters for his leadership at our Innovation in Conservation Awards Gala\, and we look forward to having him join us for this year’s virtual gala. \nWe would be delighted if you would join us on this special evening to celebrate leaders who are creating a brighter future for Michigan and our nation. Join us\, along with Senator Gary Peters\, Representative Elissa Slotkin and Detroit Slam Poet Natasha Miller as we honor three champions for their outstanding leadership on climate and water justice\, public health and equity\, and addressing the impacts of structural racism: Governor Gretchen Whitmer\, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist\, and Theresa Landrum. \nOctober 14\, 2020 \n6:00 – 7:30 PM \nHosted virtually on Zoom \nIf you are interested in joining us as a sponsor for this year’s event\, please click here. All ticket purchases and sponsorships will go to support Michigan LCV and our critical work to protect Michigan’s drinking water\, public health\, and our democracy\, and tackle the existential threat of our time: the climate crisis. We greatly appreciate your consideration.
