SUMMARY:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS  is a great course for novice and intermediate birders alike.  It is also a wonderful place for photographers to learn more about their subjects. \nWe have “streamlined” the original class but it still covers topics including anatomy\, physiology\, migration\, song and flight in the Tuesday evening lectures. Saturday field trips are filled with bird identification\, behavior observations and tips on how to find those birds you seek. We usually travel by carpool to our field trip sites. \nThe class consists of 4 weeks of Tuesday evening lectures and Saturday morning field trips\, beginning on April 3.  Most field trips begin at 8 AM. We try to end as close to noon as possible. Not everyone makes it to all the classes and field trips. We definitely understand and will do our best to be  be sure you can makeup any topics you miss. \nAs in previous years\, the class size will be limited to 20 individuals. We have sold out for 4 years in a row so registering as early as you can is advisable. \nYou can register on the web site at the link below. \n[vc_button url=”https://www.miavianexperience.org/field-classes/” text=”REGISTER FOR ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:2018 Mackinaw Raptor Fest
DESCRIPTION:The third annual Mackinaw Raptor Fest\, sponsored by Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch (MSRW)\, will take place April 6 to 8\, 2018. The keynote speaker will be Gene Jacobs\, lead researcher and owner of the consulting firm\, Raptor Services\, and the Linwood Springs Research Station near Stevens Point\, Wisc. During several optional sessions throughout the fest\, Jacobs will discuss what he has discovered over 30 years of banding Northern Saw-whet Owls\, share the results of 45 years of studying Red-shouldered Hawks nesting ecology\, and explain how and why Merlins are expanding their range. \nThe Morning Plenary Speaker Josh Haas will show his popular “Raptor Migration and Conquering ID: Using Video to Make Raptor ID a Snap!” The Evening Plenary Session\, which can be attended separately from the daytime talks\, features renowned wildlife artist and falconer Glen McCune from Petoskey\, Mich. who will bring one or more of his live birds. \nBreak-out sessions feature other excellent speakers\, including Joseph Youngman’s “Waterbird Migration Over Lake Superior” an explanation of various waterbird species pathways through Lake Superior\, and much more. \nOwl Banding and Constellation Discovery will also take place at the Guest House of Headlands Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City on the evenings of April 6 and 7. \nRegistration for the Mackinaw Raptor Fest opens in early January 2018.
