SUMMARY:Swift Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Swift Night Out at the Swift Sanctuary and Historic Winery \nDate: Saturday\, September 23 and Sunday\, September 24\nTime: 6 p.m. to just after sunset\nLocation: Swift Sanctuary\, 31505 Grand River Farmington\, MI 48336 \nJoin Detroit Audubon and partners at the Swift Sanctuary to watch the spectacular show as up to 50\,000 Chimney Swifts swirl around and around like a tornado before the avian funnel cloud swirls right down into this historic winery. A wooded area behind the historic winery abuts the Rouge River\, so there may be some migrants lurking there as well. This could be the largest roost of Chimney Swifts in North America! \nAs the swifts go down the chimney we will see a projection of a live video cam of their activity in the chimney\, which was partly supported by Detroit Audubon. Bring a lawn chair to watch this incredible show. Detroit Audubon will have a table at this Swift festival both nights\, we will present a PowerPoint program on swifts\, and in past years there was band to add to the festive atmosphere leading up to the grand mass descent of thousands of swifts into the chimney for the night. \nThere will be refreshments and a raffle a well\, all to raise funds for the expensive upkeep of this historic chimney! \nPlease RSVP at: https://goo.gl/forms/ZC8WAxDQqbiCf13D3 or please kindly email Jac@DetroitAudubon.org

Donnelly Conference Center\, Aquinas College\nSpeaker: Helen Taylor\, The Nature Conservancy\nTopic: The Changing Scale of Conservation \nHelen Taylor\, Michigan State Director for the Nature Conservancy\, will discuss the changing scale of conservation as organizations\, communities\, and leaders are faced with increasingly complex problems and solutions in the use and protection of natural resources. SUMMARY:Swifts in the City
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard chipping and chattering above your head when you’re in an urban downtown area or neighborhood? Have you seen small “bats” flying during the daytime? Chimney Swifts are unique\, “cigar-shaped” birds that live alongside people in many cities and neighborhoods and are easily confused with bats. They play an important role as natural pest control by consuming thousands of flying insects per day. Sadly\, these birds are declining across the country\, but you can help! \nJoin Rachelle Roake from Michigan Audubon to learn about these charming city-loving birds and find out how to help through monitoring and creating habitat. The workshop will include an indoor talk followed by a short carpool to a Chimney Swift roost location to witness the amazing spectacle of roosting behavior. This workshop is great for non-birders and birders alike\, newbies to experts. \n\nThis program is open to all ages. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear to be outside. We will have the program rain or shine. \nTo register for this program please follow the “Tickets” link or visit woldumar.org
