SUMMARY:Aldo Leopold Festival - 2016
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Aldo Leopold’s Legacy and the New North Huron Birding Trail!\nMay 13-15\, 2016\nThe second annual Aldo Leopold Festival continues the celebration of Aldo Leopold’s legacy in the Les Cheneaux Islands area\, where he spent months roaming the forests and waterways\, further honing his keen appreciation for nature. \nLast year’s festival focused on Aldo’s time in Les Cheneaux\, while we dedicated a new Michigan Historical Marker that commemorates our connection to an American pioneer of conservation. This year’s festival expands our celebration to the birds Leopold loved\, and the conservation ethics he developed that manifested in preserving the many birds that migrate through the Les Cheneaux Islands in the spring. \nThe 2016 Festival has been strategically planned to coincide with the spring migration of songbirds\, so you can enjoy seeing and hearing the dozens of species that fly in– many of whom remain through the spring and summer to nest. \nPlease join us in also celebrating the official opening of the new North Huron Birding Trail\, which has been developed over the past year to showcase the spectacular birding opportunities that can be found along Lake Huron’s north shore! A triathlon\, exploration and hiking\, Dark Sky presentation\, bird and flower hikes\, plant walk\, scavenger hunt\, picnic\, raptor shows\, Drummond Island field trip\, migratory bird talk\, and much more will be offered over the weekend. Most events are free\, but see individual event details for fees. \n \nLearn more by visiting the Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Migration Walks at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walks in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm\nMichigan Audubon’s newest sanctuary is located in Delta Township\, just northwest of downtown Lansing. This suburban oasis provides a wide variety of habitats including open meadow\, shrubland\, and wooded river floodplain. The sanctuary’s riverfront location makes it a prime stopover location for migrating warblers in the spring and fall. \nBlack-throated Green Warbler. Credit: Daniel Behm \nPlease join Michigan Audubon volunteer\, Marc North\, for free bird walks every Sunday in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm in Lansing\, Michigan. Marc North has recently completed an Eaton County Big Year and frequents Capital City Bird Sanctuary as it is his go-to birding spot for spring migrants. These walks are a great opportunity to tour the new sanctuary and to learn to identify migrating warblers by both sight and sound. Common species during migration include Yellow-throated Vireo\, Great Crested Flycatcher\, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher\, Northern Parula\, American Redstart\, and Black-throated Green\, Blackburnian\, Magnolia\, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers. \nBird walks will depart at 8 am from the Capital City Bird Sanctuary Kiosk across the street from Hawk Meadow Park. Parking is available at Hawk Meadow Park\, 6160 Delta River Dr\, Lansing\, MI 48917 (see map below). The bird walk will last from 8 am–10 am. Trails at the sanctuary are mowed but uneven so please wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. The grass is often dew-covered in the early mornings and the trail is muddy in spots. Ticks\, mosquitoes and poison ivy are present so please dress appropriately. Please email Rachelle at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org to RSVP for the walk.

SUMMARY:Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join us to improve habitat for birds!\nStewardship Workdays 9 am – 12 pm \neach Wednesday May through October and 2nd and 4th Saturdays June through August\n6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI\n  \nEvery Wednesday\, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health at our Lansing sanctuary. Tasks vary by season\, but typically range from hand-pulling weeds to hand-sawing invasive shrubs. \nThink of these workdays as “extreme gardening” – these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and manually removing invasive weeds\, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday. \nWild raspberries\, poison ivy\, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately with close-toed boots\, long sleeves\, pants\, and a hat. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended\, and we will have extras available. \nIf you are allergic to stinging insects\, please bring an EpiPen and inform the event leader.\nPlease bring gardening or leather gloves if you have them\, but we do have extras on site to borrow. As always\, we will provide water and snacks! \n  \nSign up for a workday below!\n \n  \nIf you have questions please email Rachelle Roake at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org.
