SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Lights Out
DESCRIPTION:Fall is quickly approaching\, and migration season is upon us once again. Birds face many challenges and dangers during migration\, and Lights Out programs are one way people can help limit threats birds encounter along their journey. \nAlthough we see many birds migrating throughout the day\, 80% of migratory birds travel during the night\, using the moon and stars to navigate. Lights from cities can cause birds to become disoriented and confused and lead to collisions with buildings. By turning off unused lights in tall buildings\, we can help prevent the disorientation and death of many of our migratory birds. \nJoin Susan Elbin\, former director of conservation and science at NYC Audubon\, as she discusses the importance of Lights Out programs. Tune in to learn more about the problem and solutions to help our feathered friends have a successful and safer migration. \nRegistration for the Zoom webinar here. \nWe will also be broadcasting the webinar live through our Facebook page and a recording will be made available following the event. \n\nThis event is a part of our Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn webinar series. Each webinar takes place on the second Tuesday of each month at 12 p.m. and is free.\nWebinar dates and topics: \nJan. 12 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nFeb. 9 | Nest Boxes — Maintenance and Monitoring \nMar. 9 | How To Be a Purple Martin Landlord \nApr. 13 | Bird-Window Collisions \nMay 11 | Bird-Friendly Backyards Featuring Native Plants \nJune 8 | Invasive Species — Identification and Removal Techniques \nJuly 13 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nAug. 10 | Chimney Swift Conservation Concerns and Monitoring \nSept. 14 | Lights Out and Global Bird Rescue Week \nOct. 12 | Fall Garden Clean-Up \nNov. 9 | Cats and Birds \nDec. 14 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities — Year in Review \nYou can view past webinars in the Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn playlist on Michigan Audubon’s YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Chimney Swifts
DESCRIPTION:Chimney Swifts are an urban bird species that have suffered steep population declines in recent decades. Once nesting in caves\, cliff faces\, and hollow trees\, this species has become dependent on manufactured structures to simulate this habitat — most often opting for large chimneys. These aerial insectivores spend their days eating and bathing mid-flight\, returning to the roost at night to sleep. \nA 5-inch long “flying cigar” with wings\, Chimney Swifts are a fascinating species that is dependent upon human structures for their breeding and migration habits. Chimney Swifts gather by the thousands to shelter together overnight in roosting locations during spring and fall migration — most often in large chimneys of older churches\, schools\, and factories. \nJoin Juliet Berger\, president of Washtenaw Audubon\, as she shares her experience with these special birds. She will share some photos and videos and discuss ways to preserve and protect Chimney Swifts. \nYou can register for the Zoom webinar here. \nWe will also be broadcasting the webinar live through our Facebook page and a recording will be made available following the event. \n\nThis event is a part of our Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn webinar series. SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Bird-Friendly Backyard Featuring Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are integral to a bird-friendly backyard. Birds depend on native plants for food\, shelter\, and nesting. Some 96% of our landbirds rely on insects to feed their young. Native plants produce four times as much insect biomass as their nonnative counterparts. \nNative gardens don’t have to be “messy” or “wild.” They can be clean\, aesthetically pleasing\, and serve an ecological function for our feathered friends. Planting a native garden in your yard\, no matter the size provides a little patch of Michigan habitat that will support birds\, butterflies\, pollinators\, and other wildlife. \nJoin Carolyn Miller\, Wildflower Association of Michigan president\, to learn more about creating a bird-friendly backyard using native plants. We will cover the basics of a native plant-filled yard through a combination of planting\, removing\, or replacing plants. Learn how to best introduce native plants to your landscape and invite birds\, pollinators\, and other wildlife to your backyard.

Linnea is an avid birder\, and though she doesn’t like to pick favorites\, she really appreciates the beauty of warblers and the subtlety of flycatchers. She grew up in Minnesota and feels lucky to have parents who encouraged her to get outdoors and got her involved with birding and other outdoor pursuits at an early age. Linnea has been working in the avian conservation field for the past 13 years and has been with Michigan Audubon since June 2018. Michigan Audubon’s core mission aligns well with Linnea’s values — to connect birds and people by employing sound conservation science\, research\, outreach\, and education. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Demystifying Great Lakes Waterbirds In Flight
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, identifying ducks\, loons\, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor: these waterbirds travel quickly and seem just subtly different. But lakewatching offers some of Michigan’s most exciting fall birding opportunities. Join Alison Világ\, who’s conducted Whitefish Point Bird Observatory’s waterbird count for three seasons\, as she breaks down her methods of unraveling these sorts of identifications in a free webinar. \nThe webinar will also be broadcast live through the WPBO Facebook page or you can register in advance for the webinar through zoom at:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eCFfQaqoRp2bQ71jmdc3AQ. \nA recording of the webinar will be available for viewing after the live event has taken place. \nIf you have any questions\, please email events@michiganaudubon.org. \nA recording of this event is available through the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory Facebook page or the Michigan Audubon YouTube channel.\n\nWhen Alison Világ was six\, her parents asked if she’d like to go look at ducks. Little did they know that day would be antecedent to a multitude of days spent looking at ducks\, et. al. Both professionally and as a pastime\, the pursuit of birds has taken Alison around the country and the world. For the last three migrations\, she has conducted the WPBO Waterbird Count\, and this summer\, in the capacity of Piping Plover Monitor and Outreach Specialist\, Alison extends her time at the Point. Alison received her B.A. in environmental writing from Unity College in Maine; she enjoys storytelling in many mediums\, such as guiding\, writing\, and photography. WPBO has long been a pivotal place for Alison and the continued opportunity to contribute to the work there is an honor.
