SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Spotted Knapweed Removal at Whitefish Point
DESCRIPTION:Three Shores CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area) is looking for volunteers to assist with removing spotted knapweed at Whitefish Point in Paradise\, Michigan\, on July 21 and 28. \nSpotted knapweed pulling will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until approximately 3:30 p.m. Stop by to lend a hand within that time frame and look for crew members wearing Three Shores CISMA shirts or the teardrop banner when you arrive. Garbage bags and extra work gloves will be available to volunteers. \nSpotted knapweed is an invasive plant species that can reduce biodiversity by choking out native vegetation and is present among the dunes at Whitefish Point. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Three Shores CISMA at 906-639-7139 or threeshorescisma@gmail.com. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through July\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills by taking care of our local bird sanctuary. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird in the spring and early summer\, as well as Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper in the non-breeding season (just to name a few) so you’re sure to see some great birds while you work. \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry in July. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nVolunteers are required to RSVP for workdays to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. See the update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather-dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\nCOVID-19 update: We will continue to follow all risk-reducing guidelines and policies from the Michigan governor’s office. We are limiting the number of participants allowed at each volunteer event\, and RSVPs will be required. Outdoor social distancing will be practiced\, as well as mask-wearing when social distancing is not possible. Participants are encouraged to bring their work gloves. Sign up for our monthly volunteer email for specifics on upcoming volunteer projects and guidance on what to wear and bring.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS — Invasive Species Informational Session
DESCRIPTION:During this Wednesday Workday there will be a special invasive species informational session with boot brush picks for all who attend (while supplies last)! \nDo you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry from July through October.

SUMMARY:Fall Workdays at Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:At Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary this fall\, volunteers will help us to prepare areas of meadow and woodland for continued restoration activities. We will focus on cutting and treating invasive woody plants such as black locust and multiflora rose\, in preparation for spring 2021 prescribed burns and additional native plant additions. \nNo experience necessary! Please come prepared for outdoor work\, dressing for the weather; wear non-cotton layers\, long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toed boots (hiking boots or rubber boots work well)\, and a warm hat and gloves. Bring leather work gloves\, water\, and snacks\, although we will have some on hand to share. This event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the evening before. \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 with any questions or to RSVP. \nOtis Farm Bird Sanctuary is located at 3560 Havens Rd.\, Hastings\, MI 49058. \nDirections: From Hastings\, follow M-43 west\, and continue to stay on M-43 as the road turns south. After 4 miles\, turn right onto Goodwill Road. Turn left onto Havens Road\, and the bird sanctuary entrance (parking and trailhead) is located at about 0.6 miles. \nImportant Changes to Sanctuary Workdays in Response to COVID-19 \nOut of an abundance of caution and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19\, we will be limiting workdays to eight volunteers. Now more than ever\, it will be important to RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse to ensure that we do not exceed the number of people that can safely work together on a project. We will take volunteers in the order their RSVPs are received. In the event that we have more than eight volunteers show up on a workday\, participants who have not RSVPed may be asked to leave. For the safety of all participants\, all volunteers must follow the wellness guidelines (provided below) at all times. We hope that these additional steps will not deter potential volunteers from doing their part for birds and the habitat that they depend on. \nWELLNESS GUIDELINES\n— Please stay home if you are not feeling well.\n— Cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue and wash your hands immediately afterward.\n— Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water. If no soap is available\, use a hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol content.\n— Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.\n— Practice social distancing\, maintaining a distance of at least six feet from your fellow volunteers. \nMichigan Audubon will continue to follow and adhere to recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Any additional changes to our programs and activities will be posted on our website\, www.michiganaudubon.org. General inquiries may be directed to Michigan Audubon at birds@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes\, while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from May through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as Autumn olive and Japanese barberry from July through October. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 to RSVP. See update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\n  \nImportant Changes to Sanctuary Workdays in Response to COVID-19\nOut of an abundance of caution and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19\, we will be limiting workdays to eight volunteers.
