SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through July\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills by taking care of our local bird sanctuary. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird in the spring and early summer\, as well as Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper in the non-breeding season (just to name a few) so you’re sure to see some great birds while you work. \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry in July. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nVolunteers are required to RSVP for workdays to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. See the update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather-dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\nCOVID-19 update: We will continue to follow all risk-reducing guidelines and policies from the Michigan governor’s office. We are limiting the number of participants allowed at each volunteer event\, and RSVPs will be required. Outdoor social distancing will be practiced\, as well as mask-wearing when social distancing is not possible. Participants are encouraged to bring their work gloves. Sign up for our monthly volunteer email for specifics on upcoming volunteer projects and guidance on what to wear and bring.

SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Bird-Friendly Backyard Featuring Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are integral to a bird-friendly backyard. Birds depend on native plants for food\, shelter\, and nesting. Some 96% of our landbirds rely on insects to feed their young. Native plants produce four times as much insect biomass as their nonnative counterparts. \nNative gardens don’t have to be “messy” or “wild.” They can be clean\, aesthetically pleasing\, and serve an ecological function for our feathered friends. Planting a native garden in your yard\, no matter the size provides a little patch of Michigan habitat that will support birds\, butterflies\, pollinators\, and other wildlife. \nJoin Carolyn Miller\, Wildflower Association of Michigan president\, to learn more about creating a bird-friendly backyard using native plants. We will cover the basics of a native plant-filled yard through a combination of planting\, removing\, or replacing plants. Learn how to best introduce native plants to your landscape and invite birds\, pollinators\, and other wildlife to your backyard. \nRegistration for the Zoom webinar here. \nWe will also be broadcasting the webinar live through our Facebook page and a recording will be made available following the event. \n\nThis event is a part of our Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn webinar series. Each webinar takes place on the second Tuesday of each month at 12 p.m. and is free.\nWebinar dates and topics: \nJan. 12 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nFeb. 9 | Nest Boxes — Maintenance and Monitoring \nMar. 9 | How To Be a Purple Martin Landlord \nApr. 13 | Bird-Window Collisions \nMay 11 | Bird-Friendly Backyards Featuring Native Plants \nJune 8 | Invasive Species — Identification and Removal Techniques \nJuly 13 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nAug. 10 | Chimney Swift Conservation Concerns and Monitoring \nSept. 14 | Lights Out and Global Bird Rescue Week \nOct. 12 | Fall Garden Clean-Up \nNov. 9 | Cats and Birds \nDec. 14 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities — Year in Review \nYou can view past webinars in the Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn playlist on Michigan Audubon’s YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop — Boyne City
DESCRIPTION:Out of an abundance of caution and to prevent the spread of COVID-19\, this event has been canceled.\nJoin Michigan Audubon for a daylong workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. This workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view a good example of a bird-friendly landscape.  \nParticipants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub (provided by Petoskey Regional Audubon Society) to kickstart a backyard habitat transformation. Lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nThis event takes place at the Charlevoix Conservation District located at 303 North St.\, Boyne City\, MI 49712. \nRegistration is $50 for Michigan Audubon members and $55 for non-members. \n\nImmediately following the workshop\, Petoskey Regional Audubon Society will hold a native plant sale\, in partnership with Birdsfoot Native Nursery. All registered workshop participants will be sent a preorder form for garden kits featuring eight garden designs to choose from\, each with 38 plugs! The plant sale will be located at the Charlevoix Conservation District from 3–6:30 p.m. \nMichigan Audubon would like to thank Petoskey Regional Audubon Society for providing a potted shrub to each workshop participant\, and for helping to secure presenters and the venue for the event.

SUMMARY:CCBS Workday
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills with taking care of our local bird sanctuary. \nThis little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird. Help us protect this urban nature preserve by removing invasive woody shrubs and encouraging native habitats. Please come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring leather work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand. This event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before. \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 with any questions or to RSVP. \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \nMeet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906 \nDirections:\nFrom Waverly: head west at the intersection of Waverly and Delta River Drive. After 1.5 miles\, you will see an open lot with downed trees along the south side of the road. Slow for the hidden\, gated driveway on the south side of the road.\nFrom I-69: head east on W. Saginaw Hwy and after 1 mile\, turn north on Creyts. Continue on Creyts (becomes Webster at Willow Hwy) until it dead-ends at Delta River Drive. Turn east and drive 0.1 mile\, past Hawk Meadow Park\, and slow around the curve to find the hidden\, gated driveway on the south side of the road.
