SUMMARY:Open House at Capital City Bird Sanctuary Celebrating International Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Please join us from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday\, May 13 for a spring open house as we celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at Capital City Bird Sanctuary\, featuring a variety of nature walks and family-friendly activities. The theme for this year’s International Migratory Bird Day focuses on migratory stopover sites that help birds along their way. Capital City Bird Sanctuary is an excellent stopover site for many migratory birds that pass through our region during the spring and fall. Many other species utilize the 65 acres of forest\, meadow\, and riverside habitats protected by this public nature sanctuary for nesting and foraging activities. Nearly 2 miles of unpaved trails offer visitors a chance to get close to nature and observe birds\, flowers\, and wildlife. This celebration will include activities for adults and children to learn about birds\, plants\, and other creatures that can be found in your own backyard. The event will also feature helpful demonstrations on how to care for bird nest boxes\, create native habitat\, and volunteer with Michigan Audubon. The event will wrap-up with a tree planting ceremony\, sponsored by the Garden Club of Greater Lansing\, to create even better habitat for migratory birds. Please wear sturdy walking shoes or waterproof boots for unpaved\, grassy or muddy trails. Bring binoculars if you have them. We hope to see you there! \nDirections: \nCapital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm is located northwest of downtown Lansing\, on Delta River Drive. Parking is available at Hawk Meadow Park\, 6160 Delta River Drive. The sanctuary entrance is south of the Hawk Meadow Park parking area\, marked by a wooden kiosk. \nActivity schedule: \n8 a.m. Guided bird walk \n9 a.m. Family birds and nature walk \n9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Kids’ crafts\, activities\, and information tent open \n10 a.m. Botany and birds walk \n10 a.m. Nest box walk \n11:30 a.m. Arbor Day oak tree planting co-sponsored by the Garden Club of Greater Lansing \n

SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop 2018 - Native Design for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon and Wesley Landon of Native Edge for an all-day workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. Wesley Landon is a licensed landscape architect focused on creating resilient\, innovative places which inspire and restore the native environmental fabric of the landscape. He will be sharing his knowledge through an interactive exercise and discussion on site selection and formal design using native plants. Participants should bring aerial images\, sketches of a future garden project\, and/or knowledge about specific site conditions to discuss during the exercise. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick-start a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-45248807401″ text=”>> Click here to register for the Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon\, Christopher Hart of HartScapes\, and Dan Auer of Woldumar Nature Center for a daylong workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk right at the Michigan Audubon office to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype Native Plant Nursery in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery. Participants will also have the opportunity to shop and explore at Wildtype during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. \nParticipants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kickstart a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \n If you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nWorkshop Agenda: \n8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Registration and Refreshments \n9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Workshop indoor session \n12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch (provided) \n1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Wildtype Tour and Native Plant Sale \nCost: $30 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $40 for non-members of either organization \nClick here to register for the workshop. \nChristopher Hart graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Landscape and Nursery Management and has been operating HartScapes since 2012. He will be sharing his knowledge of native landscape design\, the importance of selecting local genotypes when purchasing plants or seed\, and will share new plans for demonstration gardens at the Michigan Audubon office building\, which will showcase various garden types from Michigan Audubon’s “Michigan Native Garden Design For the Birds” booklet. \nDan Auer\, of Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing\, will share the nature center’s plans for a new educational native garden installation\, and how the nature center utilizes outdoor spaces to foster children’s engagement with the natural world.
