SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo – “The Great Colorado Chicken Trip”\nMonday\, March 28: 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nYes\, chickens! Chickens are birds\, too! And especially interesting if they are Lesser Prairie- Chickens or Greater Prairie-Chickens or their relatives: Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and more. There is no better place in North America to see native grouse and “chicken-like” birds than the state of Colorado – and no better time to find them than in April. This year we are going just four days early\, onMarch 28! \n\nKip Miller is a consummate naturalist\, birder\, and presenter and has been with the Berrien County Parks at Love Creek Nature Center for 34 years. He will take us on an armchair tour of Colorado from the eastern plains to the intermountain parks and mountain ridges to see Lesser and Greater Prairie- Chickens\, Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse\, Sharp-tailed and Dusky Grouse\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\, and a few other not-so-chickenish birds. \n\nBesides his work with the Berrien County Parks\, Kip enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for birds by hosting\, organizing\, and guiding birding events and tours – both close to home and in Colorado and other places. You may discover the urge to see more. \n\nPlease come join us at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce our dishwashing. \n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting\nFebruary 29\, 7:00 PM\nThe nation’s electrical system negatively affects birds\, but technologies differ in their impacts. February’s program\, “Birds on the Wire\,” will explore these varying impacts. Speakers Dr. Erik Nordman and Kim Walton will share interesting facts and address common misconceptions about how our electrical grid system affects birds and bats. Dr. Nordman is an associate professor of natural resources management at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). He earned his Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the State University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. He has more than 15 years of experience working with renewable energy systems\, including wind and solar energy for Kenya’s tea industry\, public perceptions of offshore wind energy development and the pest-resistance of biomass crops. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant in 2012 to conduct research on renewable energy and to teach in the Environmental Studies and Energy Engineering departments at Kenyatta University in Nairobi\, Kenya. Kim is the Program Director at GVSU’s Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. She also teaches classes on sustainability and policy for GVSU. SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nMonday\, February 22: 7:00 PM\nDo you think the American Woodcock is a strange bird? It doesn’t even live in the woods! Or because of its unusually short legs\, its unusually chubby body\, or its unusually long beak\, let’s not even get into its sexual behaviors. Yes\, it is a strange bird. But like many of us\, it does not like cold weather (the woodcocks went south). Maybe that is why Jordyn is available to come and speak to us in February. \nJordyn is the Wildlife Outreach Technician for the DNR. Raised in a small northernMichigan town “where the main street is lined with tractors and there is only one flashing traffic light\,” she is now running the PureMichigan Hunt program and is the communications contact for Southwest Michigan. In February that has her out doing school programs and speaking to Audubon groups about strange birds. \nJoin us\, this bird will warm your hearts\, on Monday\, February 22\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee cup. \nQuestions? Contact: Larry Boutelle\, 269-372-0678

SUMMARY:Petoskey Regional Audubon Society Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Hindle-Ross Trails – Petoskey Regional Audubon Society\nTuesday\, August 11\, 2015 10:00 am \nLeaders: Debbie Hindle & Ken Ross\nJoin PRAS members Debbie Hindle and Ken Ross on a guided walk along their two miles of well-maintained trails through rolling meadows and woodlands near Cross Village. Enjoy views of the Waugoshance Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula\, and linger at the interesting seating areas they have created. Through their creativity and love for the land\, they have turned their 80-acre property into a wonderful place to quietly observe nature and take leisurely walks. On the July walk 9 participants identified 29 species of birds and also saw deer\, wildflowers and several species of butterflies including Monarch and Red Admiral. Bring binoculars\, bug spray\, sunscreen and hat. Don’t forget your camera\, the views are amazing. Weather is changeable so bring layers. Plan on a 2-3 hour stroll on gently undulating terrain.  Dutch treat/group lunch to follow\, at Legs Inn or Moose Jaw Junction\, for those interested. \nWEATHER NOTE: Our membership covers a large geographic area. Just because it’s raining in your location\, it doesn’t mean that rain is also at the field trip location. When checking the weather report\, check for Cross Village weather to get an idea of what the day will hold. Our hosts and Audubon members Ken and Debbie live on the property and will be there rain or shine. \nIMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS: Please be courteous to the residents along this local\, unpaved road. DRIVE SLOWLY to  keep the level of dust and noise down. It is important to maintain good relations with the neighbors. Even better\, please carpool if you’re able. \nDirections:  From Cross Village go east on Levering Road about 1.5 miles\, then turn south on Lookout Road.  Go approx. one-half mile to the top of Lookout Road where it dead-ends\, and turn into the field at the right to park.  The walk will start from there. \nFrom the south\, take US-31 north to Levering Road. Go east 10 miles. Pass Hill Road on your left. Turn south on Lookout road and follow directions above.

DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Woods & Stream Birding near Cross Village – Petoskey Regional Audubon Society\nFriday\, July 24\, 2015\, 10:00 am \nLeaders: June Summers & Tracy Datlen \nDetails: \nThe owner (and new PRAS member) of this 100-acre pristine property of dense woods\, wetland and stream has invited Petoskey Audubon members on a very special bird walk and nature outing. Due to the undisturbed nature of this property there are abundant native plants in addition to birds. On this walk we will focus on a short 1/2-mile loop near the stream and wetland. We will make frequent stops of about 15 minutes to allow the birds to come in to us. Bring a folding chair and/or spotting scope. The best birding at this location is stationary. There is a lot of birding by ear. The location is at a private home with limited parking. For directions and further details\, please contact Tracy Datlen at tadatl@live.com. Due to parking constraints and the sensitive nature of the property (among other things\, there’s an active turtle nest in the driveway) some coordination of cars and participants is required. Carpooling recommended. Optional dutch-treat lunch at an area restaurant after the walk. \nQuestions: \nContact Tracy Datlen
