SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon and Saving Birds Thru Habitat’s Kay Charter for an all-day workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how you can turn your backyard into a natural bird feeder. This workshop will feature an indoor educational session in the morning followed by an outdoor field trip in the afternoon to visit good examples of bird-friendly landscaping. This workshop includes a trip to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will tour us around this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource bag packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick start a backyard habitat transformation. Lunch is included with registration along with resource packets\, and a native oak with a protective tree tube and fiberglass pole. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n  \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-32846747506?aff=utm_source%3Deb_email%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_campaign%3Dnew_event_email&utm_term=eventurl_text” text=”>> Register Now” size=”big” align=”left” type=”primary” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]\n  \nCancellation Policy: If you must cancel your participation in a Michigan Audubon sponsored event\, fees are refundable (minus a $25 processing fee) up until one month prior to the tour. SUMMARY:Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join us to improve habitat for birds!\nStewardship Workdays 9 am – 12 pm \neach Wednesday May through October and 2nd and 4th Saturdays June through August\n6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI\n  \nEvery Wednesday\, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health at our Lansing sanctuary. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended\, and we will have extras available. \nIf you are allergic to stinging insects\, please bring an EpiPen and inform the event leader.\nPlease bring gardening or leather gloves if you have them\, but we do have extras on site to borrow. As always\, we will provide water and snacks! \n  \nSign up for a workday below!\n \n  \nIf you have questions please email Rachelle Roake at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org.

Tasks vary by season\, but typically range from hand-pulling weeds to hand-sawing invasive shrubs. \nThink of these workdays as “extreme gardening” – these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and manually removing invasive weeds\, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday. \nWild raspberries\, poison ivy\, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately with close-toed boots\, long sleeves\, pants\, and a hat.
