SUMMARY:Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Sanctuary Event – Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm Grand Opening\nOn Saturday\, May 9th from 10am to Noon\, Michigan Audubon will hold a public dedication ceremony in honor of the Haussman family. Following the dedication ceremony\, Michigan Audubon staff will lead a free sanctuary hike and highlight sanctuary projects along the way including the new native bird garden\, community vegetable garden\, and bird nest box trail. This walk will be on grassy trails with gradual slopes which may be muddy in spots. Participants should wear good walking shoes or boots to stay dry. The sanctuary provides great habitat for birdwatching\, so participants are encouraged to bring binoculars to spot birds during the hike. \nPlease join Michigan Audubon in thanking the Haussman Family for protecting this urban oasis for birds and people to enjoy. Parking is available at Hawk Meadow park located at 6160 Delta River Drive\, Lansing with overflow parking available at Delta Hillside Cemetery\, just west of the sanctuary. The dedication ceremony will take place at the Capital City Bird Sanctuary entrance and trail head\, located across the street from the Hawk Meadow parking lot. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Event – Stewardship Workdays at Capital City Bird Sanctuary\nHeld every Wednesday starting June 24 through October 28\, 9 am – 12 pm\n6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI\nEvery Wednesday\, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health at our Lansing sanctuary. Tasks vary by season\, but typically range from hand-pulling weeds to hand-sawing down invasive shrubs. \nThink of these workdays as “extreme gardening” – these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and manually removing invasive weeds\, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday. \nWild raspberries\, poison ivy\, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately with close-toed boots\, long sleeves\, pants\, and a hat. Insect repellent and sunscreen are recommended\, and we will have extras available. \nIf you are allergic to stinging insects\, please bring an EpiPen and inform the event leader.\nPlease bring gardening or leather gloves if you have them\, but we do have extras on site to borrow. As always\, we will provide water and snacks! \nIf you have questions\, or would like to sign up to attend a workday\, please email Rachelle Roake at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Viewing at Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Crane Viewing – Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\nOctober-November \nSandhill Crane viewing is available at the Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary northeast of Jackson\, with volunteers from the Jackson Audubon Society will be on hand weekends October through November from 4 p.m. until dusk. Volunteers will have binoculars and scopes available to help you view the birds. \nIt can take several hours for all the cranes to return to the roost when they fly in for the evening. But when the cranes fly out in the morning right at sunrise\, all the birds pretty much leave at once\, which makes for a spectacular viewing opportunity at Haehnle Sanctuary. \nThe Haehnle Sanctuary parking area is located across the road from 9011 Seymour Road in Jackson County. The number of cranes roosting at Haehnle is dependent on the water level in Mud Lake. On Tuesdays\, the Sanctuary’s website is updated with the latest number of birds counted. Visit the website at haehnlesanctuary.org. It also has maps and directions to assist you in finding the sanctuary.
