SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress
DESCRIPTION:Program: Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress \nAudubon Society of Kalamazoo \nMonday\, February 23\, 2026\, 6:30pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 10th Street N\, Kalamazoo\, MI 49009\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that humanity has only four years to cut global greenhouse gas emissions nearly in half\, and the consequences of failure are dire – for us and for the natural world. Birds are already feeling the heat\, and examples will be shared. Anyone who’s done a Christmas Bird Count or submitted to eBird has helped document climate-related changes in bird distribution\, migration\, and nesting. Climate initiatives from Audubon include National’s award-winning climate action guide and webpage\, and many local chapter efforts. Good news is that quite a few proven climate solutions are available\, already having an impact. But they need to be implemented\, and everyone can help with that. We can make a difference for ourselves\, the birds we love\, and our irreplaceable living planet. \nOur speaker and ASK Board member\, Dr. Susan Schneider\, has served on the boards of four Audubon chapters and been president of two. Her years of experience in climate change work include outreach\, community projects\, organizing\, academic and nonacademic publications\, and extensive public speaking. As Senior Scientist for the sustainability nonprofit Root Solutions\, Schneider helped design projects\, and coauthored two chapters in the organization’s guidebook\, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change. Recent outreach includes a podcast for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a monthly “green psychology” blog. Schneider’s award-winning book for the public\, The Science of Consequences\, covers basic learning principles and their broad range of applications\, including sustainability. Schneider is on the faculty at Western Michigan University and serves on its Climate Change Working Group. She also serves on the Tools of Change Landmark Peer Review Panel for Climate Change\, a psychology for sustainability board\, and the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America.

SUMMARY:CANCELED — COMMUNITY: Tawas Point Migration 2020
DESCRIPTION:In response to COVID-19\, this event has been canceled. \nA Birding Adventure from AuSable Valley Audubon: The 15th Spring birding event at Tawas Point in Iosco County \nTawas Point on the shore of Lake Huron is a natural birding hotspot in the Spring as migrating birds follow the shoreline to their summer nesting habitats. Songbirds\, shorebirds\, and raptors all may be seen at this location and throughout Iosco County at forest\, wetland\, and lake sites during May. \nSince 2006\, AuSable Valley Audubon\, a chapter of Michigan Audubon\, has hosted an event to both educate and celebrate with local government\, businesses\, and interested nature enthusiasts the impact and importance of bird migration in this area. The program has attracted growing participation from throughout Michigan and a broader\, even international\, area. \nThe Tawas Point Migration 2020 program offers a combination of high-quality guided birding opportunities for small groups coupled with indoor educational sessions designed for birders of all ages. \n\nField trips include trails at Tawas Point State Park and car-pool/bus destinations in Iosco County. Participants can expect to see Whip-poor-wills\, Red-headed Woodpeckers\, Trumpeter Swans\, migrating warblers\, and our featured Scarlet Tanagers. Some field trips focus on the unique Kirtland’s Warbler habitat.\n\n\nThe educational program includes hands-on nature activities for kids as well as two new hour-long live birds of prey shows. Other sessions include Monarch Butterfly raising\, Trumpeter Swans\, and Eagle Research.\nFood Service offers a Welcome Birders Dinner on Thursday\, May 14\, dining options among Migration sponsors\, and a buffet dinner on Saturday evening.\n\nNote: Rising Lake Huron water levels have affected Tawas Point State Park.  You might need boots if you plan to walk along the shore or the Two-Track Trail to the tip of the Point. \nPlease visit the web pages provided\, which are designed to walk you through the details and locations of the Tawas Point Migration 2020 event and registration. The May 15 Friday evening program is free and open to the public. The registration fee is $25 per adult for all activities May 14 -16. Additional fees are listed for field trips/transportation. Adults age 18 and older attending only the educational program on May 16 may register at the door for $5. Birders under age 17 participate for free when accompanied by a paying adult. You may register online for the full event on this web page. Registration fees are kept low through the generous support of local sponsors. \nLinks to the Migration 2020 pages: \nField Trips with Guides\nPresentations\nLogistics and Maps\nRegistration\nPast Sponsors

SUMMARY:Winter Walks at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a time of year when many of us don’t venture out to find birds — but there are many out there! Several species of birds migrate from boreal forests south for the winter and end up in Michigan — including some species of sparrow and finch\, kinglets\, and other winter specialties. Other birds we find here year-round\, such as Black-capped Chickadee and White-breasted Nuthatch. This is a great time of year to not only observe flocks with several species foraging loosely together but also to brush up on birding basics when there aren’t leaves blocking your view into the treetops and when you don’t need to contend with flocks of fast-moving\, hard-to-see warblers. These free bird walks will be led by Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse. \nDress for the weather — it may be cold! Wear non-cotton layers if possible\, a warm hat and gloves\, and boots. If there is snow on the ground\, please feel free to bring and use your own snowshoes. Bring your binoculars (some will be available to borrow)! Walks are suitable for all ages and any level of birding experience. Capital City Bird Sanctuary trails are either packed dirt or mowed grass (or snow\, potentially)\, and there are a few short inclines to access parts of the sanctuary. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, please email Linnea at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. If the bird walk will be canceled due to weather\, Linnea will send a cancellation notice to those who RSVP\, by 5 p.m. the evening prior. \nWinter walks take place on the first Sunday of each month\, January through March\, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. All walks will meet at the parking lot of Hawk Meadow Park located at 6160 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.
