SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through July\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills by taking care of our local bird sanctuary. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird in the spring and early summer\, as well as Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper in the non-breeding season (just to name a few) so you’re sure to see some great birds while you work. \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry in July. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nVolunteers are required to RSVP for workdays to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. See the update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather-dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\nCOVID-19 update: We will continue to follow all risk-reducing guidelines and policies from the Michigan governor’s office. We are limiting the number of participants allowed at each volunteer event\, and RSVPs will be required. Outdoor social distancing will be practiced\, as well as mask-wearing when social distancing is not possible. Participants are encouraged to bring their work gloves. Sign up for our monthly volunteer email for specifics on upcoming volunteer projects and guidance on what to wear and bring.

Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry from July through October.

SUMMARY:Migration Walks at Capital City Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walks in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm\nMichigan Audubon’s newest sanctuary is located in Delta Township\, just northwest of downtown Lansing. This suburban oasis provides a wide variety of habitats including open meadow\, shrubland\, and wooded river floodplain. These walks are a great opportunity to tour the new sanctuary and to learn to identify migrating warblers by both sight and sound. Common species during migration include Yellow-throated Vireo\, Great Crested Flycatcher\, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher\, Northern Parula\, American Redstart\, and Black-throated Green\, Blackburnian\, Magnolia\, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers. \nBird walks will depart at 8 am from the Capital City Bird Sanctuary Kiosk across the street from Hawk Meadow Park. Parking is available at Hawk Meadow Park\, 6160 Delta River Dr\, Lansing\, MI 48917 (see map below). The bird walk will last from 8 am–10 am.
The sanctuary’s riverfront location makes it a prime stopover location for migrating warblers in the spring and fall. \nBlack-throated Green Warbler. Credit: Daniel Behm \nPlease join Michigan Audubon volunteer\, Marc North\, for free bird walks every Sunday in May at Capital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm in Lansing\, Michigan. Marc North has recently completed an Eaton County Big Year and frequents Capital City Bird Sanctuary as it is his go-to birding spot for spring migrants. Trails at the sanctuary are mowed but uneven so please wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. The grass is often dew-covered in the early mornings and the trail is muddy in spots. Ticks\, mosquitoes and poison ivy are present so please dress appropriately. Please email Rachelle at RRoake@michiganaudubon.org to RSVP for the walk.
