SUMMARY:Swifts Nights Are Back! Celebrate Urban Wildlife at Smith Floral in Lansing!
DESCRIPTION:May 5 – 11\nCome celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) with Michigan Audubon with a week of Swifts Night Out events\, May 5 – 11. \nThe theme of this year’s WMBD is Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities\, and what better bird to celebrate than the Chimney Swift\, a bird now intertwined with human habitation. \n“Swifts Nights Out\, hosted by Michigan Audubon and supported by its Capital Area chapter\, are happening each night from May 5–11\, 8:00–9:30 p.m.\, at the beautiful Smith Floral & Greenhouses\, located at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nThis free\, family-friendly event is your chance to witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing sky shows: hundreds of Chimney Swifts swirling in a tornado-like formation before swooping into their evening roost. It’s a magical\, urban wildlife spectacle you won’t want to miss! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nArrive early to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! \nThese incredible birds have faced steep population declines due to habitat loss\, insecticide use\, and climate change. At the event\, you’ll also learn how you can help protect them through conservation and citizen science efforts. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564. \nYou can learn more about World Migratory Bird Day at https://www.migratorybirdday.org/. \n  \n

Our passionate team of bird enthusiasts and volunteers is gearing up to count as many bird species as possible – all to raise essential funds for Michigan Audubon’s vital avian research at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory (WPBO) in Paradise\, Michigan. \nWhat’s new in 2025? \nWe’re expanding our count territory beyond Chippewa County to include Alger\, Delta\, Luce\, Mackinac\, and Schoolcraft Counties – inviting more birders to join the fun and put their skills to the test. Whether you’re an experienced birder or a novice\, you can make a big difference. \nSign up to bird \n\nTo volunteer as a counter\, solo or with a team\, email us at birds@michiganaudubon.org and we’ll send you all the details.\nTop teams and individuals will receive a special gift bag and be featured in our Jack Pine Warbler magazine and on Instagram!\nUtilize a special Birdathon Big Day eBird event list to track your sightings and monitor the competition.\n\nOur Goal? Raise $10\,000 in one day! \nBy making a per-species pledge – whether it’s 25¢ or $5 – you’ll be making a meaningful impact. Every dollar supports conservation efforts and critical research positions at WPBO\, which requires $100\,000 annually to fund seven dedicated research staff and operational needs. \nMake a per-species pledge (e.g. $0.50 per bird species) \n\nLast year’s count was 141 species — let’s aim even higher this year!\nAll pledges will be updated to reflect the total bird species tallied\, and\npayment requests will be sent\nSimply click here to pledge now\n\nDonate directly to support our fieldwork \n\nSimply click here to donate now\nOr mail a check to: (please include Birdathon Big Day in the memo)\nMichigan Audubon\n2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\nOkemos\, MI 48864\n\nHelp Protect Migrating Birds at WPBO \nOur dedicated team of seasonal researchers works tirelessly to monitor and protect migrating birds across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. From raptor and waterbird counts in the spring and fall to summer monitoring of the endangered Piping Plover – the work at WPBO is entirely funded by donors like you. \nWe’ve partnered with Seney National Wildlife Refuge to protect Piping Plovers\, but a current pause in federal funding has placed their annual $10\,000 contribution in jeopardy. That’s why your support is more critical than ever. \nFunds raised help sustain key research positions\, including: \n\nSpring and fall Raptor and Waterbird Counters\nPiping Plover Monitor\, protecting an endangered species\nField Ornithologist\, engaging with visitors and leading bird walks\nNEW in 2025: Songbird morning flight monitoring\n\nThese roles require funding for housing\, equipment\, and supplies —your donations make it all possible! \nWhen you donate to Birdathon Big Day\, following the event\, you will receive the 2025 Birdathon Big Day Species List as a token of our appreciation. \nThank you for participating in Michigan Audubon’s mission to connect birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation\, research\, and education.
