SUMMARY:Martha Mott Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Mott Sanctuary 9/12/23. Unit 1 middle of unit looking west. Photo by Chad Machinski \nHello! \nWe are having a Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary Volunteer Workday on Friday\, May 17th\, from 1pm to 4pm\, our first of 2024! We will continue to chip away at Autumn Olive and other woody plants in the prairie. This workday will be Conservation Manager Chad Machinski; he will outline the scope of work for everyone and make sure everyone understands the goals of the day. Please bring your own hand tools for this workday. If you have power tools such as a chainsaw or brush cutter\, along with proper personal protective equipment\, please bring those if you would like. We may not use all power tools brought. Please register for the workday here so we know who to expect! \nWe will keep everyone notified of any changes to the workday due to weather. Thank you all for the work that you do! With your help\, Martha Mott will become the savanna it wants to be. \nPlease come dressed and supplied appropriately for working outdoors in the cold\, this includes: gloves\, closed toed shoes\, pants and jacket. The workday will be cancelled if there is inclement weather or poor air quality. \nWe are looking forward to seeing you there! \nMartha Mott Sanctuary is located on 44th Avenue in Mattawan between 24th Street and Woodview Drive. \nMartha Mott Sanctuary comprises 80 acres and is believed to have been Oak Savanna prior to European settlement. Since then\, sections of the property have been grazed and farmed. Michigan Audubon is working towards restoring sections of this sanctuary to Oak Savanna\, characterized by fire and a sparse Oak canopy. \nFor specific questions regarding the workday\, contact Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org \nMichigan Audubon connects birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation\, education\, and research efforts in the state of Michigan

SUMMARY:Kirtland's Warbler Tours 2024
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon\, in collaboration with Hartwick Pines State Park\, will offer Kirtland’s Warbler Tours in 2024. Tours will be held daily at 7 a.m. with an additional 11 a.m. tour on Saturdays and Sundays from May 25 through June 30. The tours are based at Hartwick Pines State Park just north of downtown Grayling. Tours cost $15 per person\, and you must have a Recreation Pass to enter the State Park. \nTour sizes will be limited to 25 people\, and participants must pre-register. \nGroups of 10 or more participants should contact Michigan Audubon directly at events@michiganaudubon.org to schedule a private 11 a.m. tour during the week. \nTours will meet at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center within Hartwick Pines State Park\, where participants are given a brief orientation to the Kirtland’s Warbler and the jack pine habitat. Afterward\, participants caravan to protected pine barrens for the chance to view the endangered warbler. Tours typically last 2.5 to 3 hours in duration. \nHartwick Pines State Park and the Michigan Forest Visitor Center are located on Hartwick Pines Road (aka M-93) just east of I-75. There is an approximate walk of five minutes up an inclined walkway to reach the visitor center from the parking lot. You can find a map and detailed information regarding Hartwick Pines on the Michigan DNR Website. \nA Recreation Passport is required for entry to the park. Recreation Passports can be purchased beforehand through the State of Michigan here or onsite upon arrival at the park. \nWe have a high success rate of seeing the Kirtland’s Warbler. However\, weather plays an important role\, as they tend to stay down in the pine branches during inclement weather and severe heat. Our guides have even been able to locate the bird during inclement weather\, so don’t cancel your plans because the sun isn’t shining. \nPlease be advised that you will park along the road and walk into the jack pine habitat on sand trails. Walking distance is usually less than one mile. The distance of foot travel will depend on where the birds establish their territory for the nesting season in the jack pine. \nPlease dress for weather conditions and wear good walking shoes or boots. You will be outside for approximately two hours\, so sunscreen\, insect repellent\, and a hat are always recommended. \nOut of respect for the bird and its well-being\, our guide will not make special accommodations for professional photographers. \nAre you looking for accommodations for the night in Grayling? There are many small motels and two chain hotels to fit your needs. Check the Grayling Visitor’s Bureau for information. \nIf you have questions regarding Kirtland’s Warbler Tours\, please contact us at events@michiganaudubon.org. \nRegistration opens on February 2 at 9 a.m. Link will go live then. \nRegister for a Kirtland’s Warbler Tour \nFeatured photo: Kirtland’s Warbler by Sherman Garnett
