SUMMARY:Martha Mott Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Martha Mott\, 3/30/23 \nHello! \nWe are having a Martha Mott Bird Sanctuary Volunteer Workday on Friday\, March 1st\, from 1pm to 4pm\, our first of 2024! We will continue to chip away at Autumn Olive and other woody plants in the prairie. This workday will be led by fellow volunteer\, David Riggs\, he will outline the scope of work for everyone and make sure everyone understands the goals of the day. Please bring your own hand tools for this workday. If you have power tools such as a chainsaw or brush cutter\, along with proper personal protective equipment\, please bring those if you would like. We may not use all power tools brought. Please register for the workday here so we know who to expect! \nWe will keep everyone notified of any changes to the workday due to weather. Thank you all for the work that you do! With your help\, Martha Mott will become the savanna it wants to be. \nPlease come dressed and supplied appropriately for working outdoors in the cold\, this includes: gloves\, closed toed shoes\, pants and jacket. The workday will be cancelled if there is inclement weather or poor air quality. \nWe are looking forward to seeing you there! \nMartha Mott Sanctuary is located on 44th Avenue in Mattawan between 24th Street and Woodview Drive. \nMartha Mott Sanctuary comprises 80 acres and is believed to have been Oak Savanna prior to European settlement. Since then\, sections of the property have been grazed and farmed. Michigan Audubon is working towards restoring sections of this sanctuary to Oak Savanna\, characterized by fire and a sparse Oak canopy. \nFor specific questions regarding the workday\, contact Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org \nMichigan Audubon connects birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation\, education\, and research efforts in the state of Michigan

SUMMARY:MA MEMBERS — The Spark Bird Project: Exploring what inspires people's adoration for birds
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Michigan Audubon members!!! We have a free members-only webinar for you! \nJoin your fellow MA members and Dr. Jennifer Lodi-Smith on March 5 at 7 p.m. to delve into The Spark Bird Project\, a research initiative designed to gather and share the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical missing piece in understanding the ecology of birds — birders themselves.  \nDr. Lodi-Smith\, a Professor of Psychology and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Canisius College in Buffalo\, NY\, launched The Spark Bird Project “to help better understand who birders are and who potential birders may be — insights that can help shape how organizations engage with birders to the potential benefit of birders\, the birding community\, and the birds.” \nJoin the MA birding community and Dr. Lodi-Smith to learn more about the current findings of The Spark Bird Project and share your spark bird experience! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nMichigan Audubon members can also read about The Spark Bird Project in the 2024 winter issue of the Jack Pine Warbler. \nIf you have any questions\, please email events@michiganaudubon.org. \n\nMA MEMBER SPARK BIRD HIGHLIGHT \n“My girlfriend and I were camping with another couple in the Grand Canyon\, Arizona. My buddy had binos and a bird book. During the weeklong stay\, we kept spotting Bullock’s Orioles\, and I was hooked on birding. That was in 1980\, and I’ve been birding ever since. I like the hikes\, ID work\, and looking birds up. Birding is a great way to meet new people\, enjoy a nature walk\, take in pretty scenery\, and do all this while being non-consumptive. It’s good for you\, the planet\, and the birds. Birding is the trifecta of win/win. Now go outdoors and do something.” ~ MA Member Dan J. | Belmont\, MI

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — The Meadowlark Conundrum: Why many of our restored grasslands may not have grassland birds
DESCRIPTION:Grassland birds are in the steepest decline of any other habitat group in North America. In response to the continued loss of these incredible bird species and their habitat\, many well-intentioned conservationists have reconstructed prairies to provide habitat for grassland specialists. But are their efforts working\, and if not\, how come? An ongoing breeding bird monitoring program on Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy preserves may shed some light on these challenges. We’ll explore this conundrum and the wider efforts to save charismatic species like Bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks during this joint presentation.\nThe presenters for this program are Mitch Lettow\, Stewardship Director for the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy\, and Dr. Sharon Gill\, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, March 25\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.
