We will continue to chip away at Autumn Olive and other woody plants in the prairie. This workday will be led by fellow volunteer\, David Riggs\, he will outline the scope of work for everyone and make sure everyone understands the goals of the day. Please bring your own hand tools for this workday. If you have power tools such as a chainsaw or brush cutter\, along with proper personal protective equipment\, please bring those if you would like. We may not use all power tools brought. Please register for the workday here so we know who to expect! \nWe will keep everyone notified of any changes to the workday due to weather. Thank you all for the work that you do! With your help\, Martha Mott will become the savanna it wants to be. \nPlease come dressed and supplied appropriately for working outdoors in the cold\, this includes: gloves\, closed toed shoes\, pants and jacket. The workday will be cancelled if there is inclement weather or poor air quality. \nWe are looking forward to seeing you there! \nMartha Mott Sanctuary is located on 44th Avenue in Mattawan between 24th Street and Woodview Drive. \nMartha Mott Sanctuary comprises 80 acres and is believed to have been Oak Savanna prior to European settlement. Since then\, sections of the property have been grazed and farmed. Michigan Audubon is working towards restoring sections of this sanctuary to Oak Savanna\, characterized by fire and a sparse Oak canopy. \nFor specific questions regarding the workday\, contact Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org \nMichigan Audubon connects birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation\, education\, and research efforts in the state of Michigan

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Great Backyard Bird Count 2024
DESCRIPTION:Fun for one becomes multiplied when birders join forces for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Participating with friends\, family\, or a community group means there are more eyes to spot the birds and a deeper well of knowledge to draw from. Knowing where birds are seen—and not seen—is more important than ever during this El Niño year\, and as climate change weather fluctuations influence bird movements. \nThe 27th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is taking place February 16 through 19\, 2024. \nMore than an estimated half-million people participated during the 2023 GBBC. They reported more than 7\,500 species of birds from 200+ countries. \nTo take part in the 2024 GBBC\, each participant or group counts birds for any length of time (but for at least 15 minutes) and enters the birds they could identify at each site they visited. That could be their backyard\, but it could also be a park\, a wilderness area\, apartment balcony\, or a neighborhood street. \nFirst-timers should make it a point to read complete instructions on the GBBC website where they will also find helpful birding tips and birding app downloads. The GBBC website also features a new map for marking local GBBC community events. Birders can join up to help celebrate birds in their hometown. https://www.birdcount.org/community-map/ \nThe Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society\, and Birds Canada and is made possible in part by founding sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited.

SUMMARY:AUDUBON SOCIETY OF KALAMAZOO — Birds with Words: Exploring an Evolutionary Arms Race Between Yellow Warblers and Brown-headed Cowbirds
DESCRIPTION:FEBRUARY MONTHLY MEETING: “BIRDS WITH WORDS: EXPLORING AN EVOLUTIONARY ARMS RACE BETWEEN YELLOW WARBLERS AND BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS” \nThere may not exist a bird species more controversial and divisive than the Brown-headed Cowbird. It would be difficult to find a Facebook birding group without some form of slander against these birds and nearly every birder you meet will have a strong opinion of them\, either positive or negative. Cowbirds have been painted as a villain because of their brood parasitic breeding strategy in which they forgo the building of their own nests and care of their own offspring in favor of leaving their eggs in other “host” birds’ nests and letting other birds raise their young. In her talk\, Karla hopes to convince you that these host birds are not helpless and that\, despite their reputation\, cowbirds are as brilliant\, fascinating\, and worthy of our adoration as any other bird. \nOur speaker for February\, Karla Kelly\, MS\nPhD Student\, Dr. Gill’s Sound Ecology Lab\,\nDepartment of Biological Sciences\,\nWestern Michigan University\, will explore the evolutionary arms race\, or reciprocal adaptations\, between cowbirds and their most common host\, Yellow Warblers. We will see how the Yellow Warblers have a “word” for cowbirds\, explore the world of bird words\, and consider the role of cognition in host-parasite interactions. \nKarla began studying cowbirds and Yellow Warblers as a master’s student in 2021 and continues this work in 2023 as a first-year PhD student. While her master’s research focused on the cognition of referential calling\, her PhD research will dive deeper into the evolutionary origins of brood parasite-specific alarm calling\, and will test the evolutionary plasticity and adaptability of this unique behavior. \nWe hope you’ll join us on Monday\, February 26\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Come at 7:00 PM for some refreshments and socializing. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The one-hour program will start at 7:30. Masks are recommended but not required in the church. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or the rear entrance. \nWe will have a simultaneous Zoom link to the meeting for those who can’t make it or feel uncomfortable as yet to attend in person. This link will be emailed shortly before the meeting. We will also be recording the meeting for later viewing. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.
