SUMMARY:Celebrating Spring Migration at Whitefish Point — A Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Many of you already know and respect just how crucial avian research is\, but do you know what makes Whitefish Point Bird Observatory such an excellent place for these research efforts to take place? \nTune in with us each Thursday in May to learn about topics inspired by our research at WPBO in a free four-part webinar series! There is a little something for everyone as we take cues from our spring research subjects\, from owl banding to hawk and waterbird counts to Piping Plover conservation efforts\, and celebrate what makes spring migration at the Point special. \nThe most important thing to know about these webinars — you don’t have to be a “bird nerd” to enjoy them! They are a great opportunity to learn ID tips\, find out more about how you can be an advocate for the birds you love\, and be inspired to get out there and visit the Point! \nYou can join us via Zoom (registration required)\, watch on Facebook\, or wait for the recording to be made available through our YouTube page. Check out the individual descriptions below for registration links. \n\nOwls of Whitefish Point\nMay 6\nWould you like to learn more about the owls at Whitefish Point? Join us for a presentation by Owl Banders Chris Neri and Nova Mackentley\, who introduce the ten species of owls seen at the Point\, explain the banding process\, and review data collected over the years. Their wealth of knowledge about the owl banding history at WPBO is enlightening and inspirational! Please note that Chris and Nova’s presentation is prerecorded (they are in the middle of their banding season\, after all!). We will have other avian experts and WPBO veterans on hand to answer your questions about these wondrous raptors and how banding supports avian research efforts. \nRegister at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5G04JEYqRVu0P0xYfaL-ow.  \n\nRaptor Identification and Field Marks\nMay 13\nAre you one of the many people who find raptor identification to be tricky? Join us for a presentation by Hawk Counter Rich Couse as he covers the basics of raptor ID. Rich will share his tips and tricks that he utilizes as the hawk counter at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory (where he is currently serving his second season at the WPBO Hawk Deck) and other hawk watching sites across the country. From field marks to flight style\, Rich will cover the tools you need to distinguish between Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed Hawks\, Golden and Bald Eagles\, and more. \nRegister at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4Cyin05gQZet7eR6c4WEkA.  \n\nDemystifying Great Lakes Waterbirds\nMay 20\nHaving trouble distinguishing what dabbling duck you are observing? Or maybe you aren’t sure how to tell the difference between a Long-tailed Duck and a Red-necked Grebe from afar. Join us for Waterbird Counter Matthew Winkler’s presentation breaking down his methods used to unravel waterbird identifications. For many of us\, identifying ducks\, loons\, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor; these waterbirds travel quickly\, and some are only subtly different. Matthew will help break down these barriers and help you better enjoy lakewatching and all of the exciting birding it offers! Matthew is excited to share his experience with you and answer questions regarding waterbird ID and the waterbird count at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory. \nRegister at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BW9ao6dvRFqn_2nfpYmYvA.  \n\nSharing the Shore: Piping Plovers in Michigan\nMay 27\nEach year a section of the Whitefish Point shore is cordoned off\, protecting the Piping Plovers that return each year to rear their young. Join us for a presentation by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Piping Plover expert Jillian Farkas as she reviews the history and importance of Piping Plover conservation efforts. Jillian will cover the basic conservation history of the species\, highlight what work is currently being done to increase their population\, and ways you can help. \nRegister at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_XQx57YjnQvmEnFHi7p0gzg. \n\nWhitefish Point Bird Observatory has been home to avian research efforts for more than 40 years. Ranking among one of the most important migration sites in North America\, research conducted at WPBO significantly contributes to an ongoing effort to increase knowledge of bird migration\, encourage public awareness of birds and the environment\, and further critical bird conservation. \nIf you have questions about this webinar series\, please contact Education Coordinator Lindsay Cain at lcain@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Bird-Friendly Backyard Featuring Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Native plants are integral to a bird-friendly backyard. Birds depend on native plants for food\, shelter\, and nesting. Some 96% of our landbirds rely on insects to feed their young. Native plants produce four times as much insect biomass as their nonnative counterparts. \nNative gardens don’t have to be “messy” or “wild.” They can be clean\, aesthetically pleasing\, and serve an ecological function for our feathered friends. Planting a native garden in your yard\, no matter the size provides a little patch of Michigan habitat that will support birds\, butterflies\, pollinators\, and other wildlife. \nJoin Carolyn Miller\, Wildflower Association of Michigan president\, to learn more about creating a bird-friendly backyard using native plants. We will cover the basics of a native plant-filled yard through a combination of planting\, removing\, or replacing plants. Learn how to best introduce native plants to your landscape and invite birds\, pollinators\, and other wildlife to your backyard. \nRegistration for the Zoom webinar here. \nWe will also be broadcasting the webinar live through our Facebook page and a recording will be made available following the event. \n\nThis event is a part of our Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn webinar series. Each webinar takes place on the second Tuesday of each month at 12 p.m. and is free.\nWebinar dates and topics: \nJan. 12 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nFeb. 9 | Nest Boxes — Maintenance and Monitoring \nMar. 9 | How To Be a Purple Martin Landlord \nApr. 13 | Bird-Window Collisions \nMay 11 | Bird-Friendly Backyards Featuring Native Plants \nJune 8 | Invasive Species — Identification and Removal Techniques \nJuly 13 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Program Overview \nAug. 10 | Chimney Swift Conservation Concerns and Monitoring \nSept. 14 | Lights Out and Global Bird Rescue Week \nOct. 12 | Fall Garden Clean-Up \nNov. 9 | Cats and Birds \nDec. 14 | Mi Bird-Friendly Communities — Year in Review \nYou can view past webinars in the Mi Bird-Friendly Communities Lunch & Learn playlist on Michigan Audubon’s YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through July\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills by taking care of our local bird sanctuary. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird in the spring and early summer\, as well as Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper in the non-breeding season (just to name a few) so you’re sure to see some great birds while you work. \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from April through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as autumn olive and Japanese barberry in July. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nVolunteers are required to RSVP for workdays to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. See the update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather-dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\nCOVID-19 update: We will continue to follow all risk-reducing guidelines and policies from the Michigan governor’s office. We are limiting the number of participants allowed at each volunteer event\, and RSVPs will be required. Outdoor social distancing will be practiced\, as well as mask-wearing when social distancing is not possible. Participants are encouraged to bring their work gloves.

Sign up for our monthly volunteer email for specifics on upcoming volunteer projects and guidance on what to wear and bring.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WAS Meeting - Birding Devon and Beyond with Ben Lucking
DESCRIPTION:After racking up 266 species in Washtenaw County since he started birding here as a lad\, often on Washtenaw Audubon field trips\, Ben Lucking transferred to the University of Exeter in the English county of Devon. Though he obviously spends much of his time studying\, in his spare time he’s seen 170 species in his couple of years in Devon\, good for 7th place on the eBird top 100 life list for the county. From his room in Devon via the magic of Zoom\, Ben will describe some of his birding adventures in the UK\, with a few forays to more exotic locales\, such as North Africa.\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/97522069279\nOr dial-in: +1 312 626 6799\nMeeting ID: 975 2206 9279\nNo password\n\n  \n\n  \nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:Black Birders Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:Graphic designed by Sheridan Alford and Danielle Bettany. \nThe inaugural Black Birders Week took place in 2020 and quickly became a viral movement. This now-annual event addresses the challenges Black birdwatchers face\, such as underrepresentation and overt racism\, while shedding light on how justice and equity play a part in the conservation field and recreational birding. \nEach day of Black Birders Week features a different theme and Twitter hashtag that promote diversity in birdwatching while celebrating Black culture. The founders envisioned that this event could be a springboard to shape a more diverse\, inclusive future for birding\, conservation\, and the natural sciences. \nYou can learn more details about the week’s events at blackafinstem.com. \n“The birds and the outdoors are for all of us to enjoy. Don’t let anybody make you think otherwise\, and don’t let anyone deny you the tremendous joy\, wonder\, and sense of well-being that being outdoors and looking at and listening to birds can bring.” ~ Christian Cooper \nIf you have a #BlackBirdersWeek event that you would like added to the community calendar\, please contact Communications & Marketing Coordinator Molly Keenan at mkeenan@michiganaudubon.org.
