SUMMARY:Wednesday Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills by taking care of our local bird sanctuary. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird in the spring and early summer\, as well as Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper in the non-breeding season (just to name a few) so you’re sure to see some great birds while you work. \nHelp us protect this urban nature preserve and encourage native habitats by continually maintaining trails and nest boxes\, while focusing on the removal of invasive garlic mustard and dame’s rocket from May through June followed by eradicating woody invasives such as Autumn olive and Japanese barberry from July through October. \nPlease come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.  \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 to RSVP. See update below regarding restrictions on workday participation. \nThis event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before.  \nPlease meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Drive\, Lansing\, MI 48906.  \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n\n  \nImportant Changes to Sanctuary Workdays in Response to COVID-19\nOut of an abundance of caution and to help prevent the spread of COVID-19\, we will be limiting workdays to eight volunteers. Now more than ever\, it will be important to RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse to ensure that we do not exceed the number of people that can safely work together on a project. We will take volunteers in the order their RSVPs are received. In the event that we have more than eight volunteers show up on a workday\, participants who have not RSVPed may be asked to leave. For the safety of all participants\, all volunteers must follow the wellness guidelines (provided below) at all times. We hope that these additional steps will not deter potential volunteers from doing their part for birds and the habitat that they depend on. \nWELLNESS GUIDELINES \n\nPlease stay home if you are not feeling well.\nCough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue and wash your hands immediately afterward.\nWash your hands frequently and thoroughly for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water. If no soap is available\, use a hand sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol content.\nAvoid touching your face with unwashed hands.\nPractice social distancing\, maintaining a distance of at least six feet from your fellow volunteers.\n\nAgain\, we encourage everyone to keep informed of developments\, as this situation is rapidly evolving.  \nMichigan Audubon will continue to follow and adhere to recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Any additional changes to our programs and activities will be posted on our website\, www.michiganaudubon.org. General inquiries may be directed to Michigan Audubon at birds@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Tower Build
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon is seeking volunteers to help build a Chimney Swift tower! This project will benefit Chimney Swift\, which are dependent on human structures for nest sites. Anyone is welcome to join\, with or without experience. \nWe will meet at the Kinawa Middle School parking area\, near the tennis courts. All tools and know-how will be provided. If you are interested\, please RSVP to Linnea at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. \nLocation: Kinawa Middle School\, 1900 Kinawa Dr\, Okemos\, MI 48864 \nDates and Times:\nAugust 24 | 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.\nAugust 31 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.\nSeptember 3 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Demystifying Great Lakes Waterbirds In Flight
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, identifying ducks\, loons\, and grebes in flight comes with a high intimidation factor: these waterbirds travel quickly and seem just subtly different. But lakewatching offers some of Michigan’s most exciting fall birding opportunities. Join Alison Világ\, who’s conducted Whitefish Point Bird Observatory’s waterbird count for three seasons\, as she breaks down her methods of unraveling these sorts of identifications in a free webinar. \nThe webinar will also be broadcast live through the WPBO Facebook page or you can register in advance for the webinar through zoom at:  https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eCFfQaqoRp2bQ71jmdc3AQ. \nA recording of the webinar will be available for viewing after the live event has taken place. \nIf you have any questions\, please email events@michiganaudubon.org. \nA recording of this event is available through the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory Facebook page or the Michigan Audubon YouTube channel.\n\nWhen Alison Világ was six\, her parents asked if she’d like to go look at ducks. Little did they know that day would be antecedent to a multitude of days spent looking at ducks\, et. al. Both professionally and as a pastime\, the pursuit of birds has taken Alison around the country and the world. For the last three migrations\, she has conducted the WPBO Waterbird Count\, and this summer\, in the capacity of Piping Plover Monitor and Outreach Specialist\, Alison extends her time at the Point. Alison received her B.A. in environmental writing from Unity College in Maine; she enjoys storytelling in many mediums\, such as guiding\, writing\, and photography. WPBO has long been a pivotal place for Alison and the continued opportunity to contribute to the work there is an honor.
