SUMMARY:Winter Walks at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a time of year when many of us don’t venture out to find birds — but there are many out there! Several species of birds migrate from boreal forests south for the winter and end up in Michigan — including some species of sparrow and finch\, kinglets\, and other winter specialties. Other birds we find here year-round\, such as Black-capped Chickadee and White-breasted Nuthatch. This is a great time of year to not only observe flocks with several species foraging loosely together but also to brush up on birding basics when there aren’t leaves blocking your view into the treetops and when you don’t need to contend with flocks of fast-moving\, hard-to-see warblers. These free bird walks will be led by Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse. \nDress for the weather — it may be cold! Wear non-cotton layers if possible\, a warm hat and gloves\, and boots. If there is snow on the ground\, please feel free to bring and use your own snowshoes. Bring your binoculars (some will be available to borrow)! Walks are suitable for all ages and any level of birding experience. Capital City Bird Sanctuary trails are either packed dirt or mowed grass (or snow\, potentially)\, and there are a few short inclines to access parts of the sanctuary. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, please email Linnea at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. If the bird walk will be canceled due to weather\, Linnea will send a cancellation notice to those who RSVP\, by 5 p.m. the evening prior. \nWinter walks take place on the first Sunday of each month\, January through March\, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. All walks will meet at the parking lot of Hawk Meadow Park located at 6160 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) takes place each year during the second week of February. This fun\, free\, family-friendly activity is a great way to engage both beginner and experienced birders in citizen science. \nParticipating in the count is as simple as counting birds for as little as 15 minutes on one or more days of the count then reporting the results online at BirdCount.org. All of the observations submitted to the GBBC are automatically entered into eBird. The data are available to explore using a number of different tools on eBird.org and BirdCount.org. Regular eBird users can participate by entering checklists into eBird as usual during the count. \nLast year\, GBBC participants in more than 100 countries counted more than 6\,800 species of birds on more than 200\,000 checklists\, providing an incredible snapshot of winter bird populations and distribution in North America and beyond. Learn more about this fantastic citizen science event at gbbc.birdcount.org/. \nRead our blog for a quick overview of how to take part in the GBBC.

SUMMARY:Winter Workdays at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a stewardship workday at Capital City Bird Sanctuary\, northwest of downtown Lansing. This little-known preserve is a great place to spot birds even during the non-breeding seasons\, including Wild Turkey\, White- and Red-breasted Nuthatches\, and Brown Creeper. Bring leather work gloves\, water\, and snacks\, although we will have extras on hand. This event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the evening before. \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 with any questions or to RSVP. \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \nMeet at: Parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.
