SUMMARY:Audubon Society of Kalamazoo Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Audubon Society of Kalamazoo\nMonday\, February 22: 7:00 PM\nDo you think the American Woodcock is a strange bird? It doesn’t even live in the woods! Or because of its unusually short legs\, its unusually chubby body\, or its unusually long beak\, let’s not even get into its sexual behaviors. Yes\, it is a strange bird. But like many of us\, it does not like cold weather (the woodcocks went south). Maybe that is why Jordyn is available to come and speak to us in February. \nJordyn is the Wildlife Outreach Technician for the DNR. Raised in a small northernMichigan town “where the main street is lined with tractors and there is only one flashing traffic light\,” she is now running the PureMichigan Hunt program and is the communications contact for Southwest Michigan. In February that has her out doing school programs and speaking to Audubon groups about strange birds. \nJoin us\, this bird will warm your hearts\, on Monday\, February 22\, at People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee cup. \nQuestions? Contact: Larry Boutelle\, 269-372-0678

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Grand Rapids Audubon Club Meeting\nFebruary 29\, 7:00 PM\nThe nation’s electrical system negatively affects birds\, but technologies differ in their impacts. February’s program\, “Birds on the Wire\,” will explore these varying impacts. Speakers Dr. Erik Nordman and Kim Walton will share interesting facts and address common misconceptions about how our electrical grid system affects birds and bats. Dr. Nordman is an associate professor of natural resources management at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). He earned his Masters of Science and Ph.D. from the State University of New York – College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. He has more than 15 years of experience working with renewable energy systems\, including wind and solar energy for Kenya’s tea industry\, public perceptions of offshore wind energy development and the pest-resistance of biomass crops. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant in 2012 to conduct research on renewable energy and to teach in the Environmental Studies and Energy Engineering departments at Kenyatta University in Nairobi\, Kenya. Kim is the Program Director at GVSU’s Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center. She also teaches classes on sustainability and policy for GVSU. She has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial & Appropriate Technology from Appalachian State University and a Masters in Environmental Analyses and Public Administration from Western Michigan University. \nQuestions?
