SUMMARY:Swift Night Out — Lansing
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Activity at this roost has been low over the past few days. If we are not experiencing Chimney Swift at this site\, we may opt to relocate to another roost near the Family Dollar at 726 E Michigan Ave\, Lansing\, MI 48912 (a five-minute drive from Smith Floral). Street parking is available at this roost site along Michigan Avenue and Hosmer Street. We will keep you posted through updates on social media if we move to this location. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to remain up-to-date.\n\nEnjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon on September 16 and celebrate urban wildlife while sipping on lemonade at Smith Floral & Greenhouses and watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. for social time with the most Chimney Swift activity starting just before sunset (7:47) and continuing through dusk. Please meet at the Smith Floral & Greenhouses’ parking lot at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Spartan Day of Service at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a stewardship day at Capital City Bird Sanctuary as part of MSU’s Fall Spartan Day of Service! This little-known preserve northwest of downtown Lansing is a great place to spot birds such as Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird — even while working. Help us protect this urban nature preserve by removing invasive woody shrubs and encouraging native habitats. Think of this workday as “wild gardening” — mildly strenuous work that involves hiking around the sanctuary and cutting down invasive woody shrubs with hand pruners or hand saws\, often in challenging locations. Additional tasks may include: general trail maintenance and cutting back overhanging plants from trails\, cleaning out bird nesting boxes\, or weeding in the native wildflower garden. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks. Please come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand. No experience necessary\, and we will provide all tools. \nPlease note: If you are an MSU student\, please volunteer for the project here. If you do so\, Michigan State University will provide transportation (bus) from the MSU campus to the sanctuary\, lunch food\, and an event T-shirt for you. More details on the event can be found on that page. \nThis CCBS workday is open to the public; members of the public may bring their own lunch if they wish\, or join for just part of the workday. Meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.\n \nPlease RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse if you plan to attend by emailing her at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Winter Bird Feeding
DESCRIPTION:Winter is an excellent time of year to engage in the hobby of backyard bird feeding. Food is a crucial element for a bird’s winter survival; providing birds with the energy\, stamina\, and nutrition they need to stay warm. This one-hour\, educational program will look at the best foods to serve and how to serve them in order to attract the greatest variety of birds right outside your window. \nTips and tricks will be shared in order to have you set-up for success once our summer residents migrate\, the days grow shorter and the nights colder. \nLaurel Zoet is a naturalist educator and owner of Wild Birds Unlimited of Brighton. Laurel is passionate about connecting people of all ages with the diversity and wonder of the natural phenomenon right in our own backyards. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864.
