SUMMARY:Volunteer Training/Review: Bird-Window Collision Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Window collisions kill up to 1 billion birds a year making it the second-largest threat to bird populations in the United States. The good news is that bird-window collisions are preventable when a few simple steps are taken and this can begin by gathering data. With fall migration upon us\, Michigan Audubon is looking for volunteers to monitor bird fatalities at buildings in the downtown Lansing area and on Michigan State University’s campus. \nCollecting data about bird-window collisions can help to assess high-risk buildings and inspire property owners to make changes to ensure greater safety for birds including moving plants away from windows and reducing artificial night lighting. \nMonitoring is ideally done in the early morning before specimens are removed by cleaning crews or eaten by predators\, but collection times are flexible. Specimens should be photographed and collected. Michigan Audubon will provide volunteers with the necessary equipment. \nIf interested\, please join us for a volunteer training session on Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. We will meet at Kelly’s Downtown (220 S. Washington Square\, Lansing\, MI 48933) for an introduction into window collision monitoring followed by a brief walk along one of the monitored routes. Volunteers are needed to walk collision monitoring routes from Aug. 15 to Oct. 31\, surveying each assigned building 2–3 times per week. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Project Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Tower Build at Woldumar
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon is seeking volunteers to help finish building a Chimney Swift tower at Woldumar Nature Center! \nThis project benefits Chimney Swift a bird species dependent on human structures for nest sites. The Okemos High School Earth Club constructed the tower components\, so we just need to assemble the tower on site. \nAll in all\, this tower will be approximately 15 feet tall and will support one nesting pair of Chimney Swift during their summer nesting season\, or several Chimney Swift (up to 100 if we are lucky!) during their migration. \n\nWe will meet at Woldumar Nature Center (5739 Old Lansing Rd\, Lansing\, MI 48917). If you are interested in volunteering with us\, please email Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. \nIn case of rain\, this event will be postponed until Sept. 4.

SUMMARY:Warner Sanctuary Workday
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon’s Ronald H. Warner Sanctuary is a hidden gem in Barry County. Adjacent to the Barry State Game Area Global Important Bird Area\, Warner is home to breeding forest birds and a number of threatened and endangered plants — and it needs your help to stay this way. \nEach workday\, Michigan Audubon staff and volunteers gather to remove invasive plants that threaten habitat health. These workdays are a great opportunity to get to know the sanctuary and help give back to the birds. Think of these workdays as “wild gardening” — these are mildly strenuous workdays that involve hiking around the sanctuary and cutting down invasive woody shrubs with hand pruners or hand saws\, often in challenging locations. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks throughout the workday. \nWild raspberries\, poison ivy\, and biting insects are common so please dress appropriately in close-toed boots\, long sleeves\, pants\, and a hat. Please bring leather or gardening gloves if you have them\, but we do have extras on site to borrow. Water and snacks will be available but feel free to bring extras if you like. \nThis event is weather dependent. Rain or thunderstorms will cancel the event. If you RSVP you will receive up-to-date information on changes to this event. Please note that our sanctuaries do not have bathrooms or running water at this time.* \nPlease RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org if you plan to attend the workday. We hope to see you at the sanctuary! \n— \nRonald H. Warner Sanctuary is located at: 42.620669\, -85.396601 \nWe will meet at the parking area on the east side of Erway Road in Hastings.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Chimney Swifts
DESCRIPTION:Chimney Swifts with Linnea Rowse \nA 5-inch long “flying cigar” with wings\, Chimney Swifts are a fascinating species that is dependent upon human structures for their breeding and migration habits. During spring and fall migration\, Chimney Swifts gather by the thousands to shelter together overnight in roosting locations – most often in large chimneys of older churches\, schools\, and factories. Come to learn about Chimney Swifts\, their role within the ecosystem\, why their population is in steep decline\, how they depend upon humans\, and what you can do to help this species. Following the presentation\, attendees are invited to caravan to a nearby known Chimney Swift roost\, where at dusk\, a swirling “tornado” of swifts will spiral down into their nighttime roost. \nLinnea Rowse is the Conservation Program Coordinator for Michigan Audubon\, overseeing the Bird-friendly Communities program\, including species-specific conservation efforts. Linnea also oversees stewardship and habitat management at Michigan Audubon’s bird sanctuaries\, and other conservation projects. Linnea received her B.S. in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from the University of Rhode Island\, and her Master’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife from The Ohio State University. She has worked for many different non-profit organizations and researchers\, always focused on bird conservation\, ecology\, and habitat restoration\, but until last year had not experienced the wonder and thrill of watching a Chimney Swift “tornado” swirl down into a chimney. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864.

SUMMARY:Swift Night Out — Lansing
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Activity at this roost has been low over the past few days. If we are not experiencing Chimney Swift at this site\, we may opt to relocate to another roost near the Family Dollar at 726 E Michigan Ave\, Lansing\, MI 48912 (a five-minute drive from Smith Floral). Street parking is available at this roost site along Michigan Avenue and Hosmer Street. We will keep you posted through updates on social media if we move to this location. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to remain up-to-date.\n\nEnjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon on September 16 and celebrate urban wildlife while sipping on lemonade at Smith Floral & Greenhouses and watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. for social time with the most Chimney Swift activity starting just before sunset (7:47) and continuing through dusk. Please meet at the Smith Floral & Greenhouses’ parking lot at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Spartan Day of Service at CCBS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a stewardship day at Capital City Bird Sanctuary as part of MSU’s Fall Spartan Day of Service! This little-known preserve northwest of downtown Lansing is a great place to spot birds such as Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird — even while working. Help us protect this urban nature preserve by removing invasive woody shrubs and encouraging native habitats. Think of this workday as “wild gardening” — mildly strenuous work that involves hiking around the sanctuary and cutting down invasive woody shrubs with hand pruners or hand saws\, often in challenging locations. Additional tasks may include: general trail maintenance and cutting back overhanging plants from trails\, cleaning out bird nesting boxes\, or weeding in the native wildflower garden. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks. Please come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand. No experience necessary\, and we will provide all tools. \nPlease note: If you are an MSU student\, please volunteer for the project here. If you do so\, Michigan State University will provide transportation (bus) from the MSU campus to the sanctuary\, lunch food\, and an event T-shirt for you. More details on the event can be found on that page. \nThis CCBS workday is open to the public; members of the public may bring their own lunch if they wish\, or join for just part of the workday. Meet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906.\n \nPlease RSVP to Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse if you plan to attend by emailing her at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org.
