SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon\, Christopher Hart of HartScapes\, and Dan Auer of Woldumar Nature Center for a daylong workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk right at the Michigan Audubon office to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype Native Plant Nursery in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery. Participants will also have the opportunity to shop and explore at Wildtype during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. \nParticipants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kickstart a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \n If you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nWorkshop Agenda: \n8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Registration and Refreshments \n9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Workshop indoor session \n12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch (provided) \n1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Wildtype Tour and Native Plant Sale \nCost: $30 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $40 for non-members of either organization \nClick here to register for the workshop. \nChristopher Hart graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Landscape and Nursery Management and has been operating HartScapes since 2012. He will be sharing his knowledge of native landscape design\, the importance of selecting local genotypes when purchasing plants or seed\, and will share new plans for demonstration gardens at the Michigan Audubon office building\, which will showcase various garden types from Michigan Audubon’s “Michigan Native Garden Design For the Birds” booklet. \nDan Auer\, of Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing\, will share the nature center’s plans for a new educational native garden installation\, and how the nature center utilizes outdoor spaces to foster children’s engagement with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Intermediate Birding
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Birding will expand upon the basics learned in the Birding 101 seminar\, with more detailed information about how\, when\, and where to find birds\, and delving into species identifications. Participants will learn about the most common bird families found in Michigan\, key identifying features to look for on a bird\, and how to use field guides or apps to improve your birding experience. \nLinnea is the Conservation Program Coordinator for Michigan Audubon\, overseeing the Mi Bird-friendly Communities program\, habitat management at Michigan Audubon’s bird sanctuaries\, and other conservation issues and opportunities. Linnea has been birding since she was a child (with her parents)\, and developed an expertise in bird identification by sight and sound through a series of field ornithology jobs as a young adult\, spending time in various ecosystems and habitats across North America. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators with Erin Oswald \nIn 2017\, Fenner Conservancy constructed an exhibit to raise awareness in the community about pollinator conservation through the raising and rearing of monarch butterflies — the Monarch House. Since then\, more than 300 monarch butterflies have been reared\, checked for parasites\, tagged\, and released. The Monarch House was built to give these important pollinators a good head-start in life and the energy to make it to their overwintering grounds in Mexico. Fenner is involved with many citizen science programs like Project Monarch Health\, Monarch Watch\, and Monarch Waystation to help increase the declining monarch population and educate the greater Lansing region about the conservation of monarchs and other pollinators.  \n\nErin Oswald is the volunteer coordinator and citizen science program coordinator at Fenner Nature Center. She oversees programs such as Project FeederWatch and all Monarch House activities. She has been working at Fenner since April 2018. Erin holds a B.S. in fisheries and wildlife from Michigan State University.
