SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Reducing Avian Collisions with Communications Towers
DESCRIPTION:Reducing Avian Collisions with Communications Towers: A community effort with Dr. Joelle Gehring \nAn estimated 6.8 million migratory birds collide with communications towers every year in the United States. Tower height\, tower lighting\, sitting within the landscape\, and the presence of supporting guy wires influences the numbers of avian collisions. Michigan research determined that taller towers\, towers with guy wires\, and towers with non-flashing lights are involved in significantly more avian collisions than shorter towers\, unguyed towers\, and towers lit with only flashing lights. In 2015\, the Federal Aviation Administration updated tower lighting requirements and now encourages tower owners to extinguish non-flashing lights on existing towers taller than 350 ft. above ground level (AGL)\, which reduces avian collisions by as much as 70%. Lighting changes on towers taller than 350 ft. AGL reduce the cost of tower operation and construction. Extinguishing non-flashing lights is one of the most effective and economically feasible means of achieving a significant reduction in avian fatalities at existing communications towers. The public is playing an important role in outreach efforts to the tower industry.\n\nDr. Joelle Gehring is a Michigan biologist. Previously\, Dr. Gehring was Senior Conservation Scientist with Michigan State University where she designed and supervised a multi-year\, landscape-scale study of the variables associated with bird collisions at communications towers. While with MSU she also studied wildlife interactions with wind energy and used those data to improve turbine siting. Throughout her career\, Dr. Gehring has used science and stakeholder input to develop and disseminate information on cost-effective methods to reduce wildlife-human conflicts. Dr. Gehring completed her Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology at Purdue University\, M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources at West Virginia University\, and her B.S.\, in both Biology and Wildlife Management at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Dr. Gehring has a wonderful 18-year old son who is studying biology at Central Michigan University. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864.

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: Kirtland’s Warbler Overview and Conservation Efforts
DESCRIPTION:Kirtland’s Warbler Overview and Conservation Efforts with Dr. Dave Ewert \nThe Kirtland’s Warbler is one of the rarest migratory songbirds in North America\, breeding almost exclusively in young jack pine stands in northern Michigan and wintering almost exclusively in dense scrub in the Bahamas. This presentation will give an overview of the biology of the Kirtland’s Warblers and how successful conservation efforts have brought the species from near extinction to recovery\, including potential delisting as a U.S. endangered species. \nDr. Dave Ewert is a Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director and Conservation Specialist with the American Bird Conservancy. He focuses primarily on the conservation of the Kirtland’s Warbler\, especially on the Bahamas wintering grounds\, and also works on protection of stopover sites for migratory birds in the Great Lakes region\, and Great Lakes coastline and island protection. Dr. Ewert received his B.S. from the University of Michigan\, and Ph.D. from the City University of New York. His research and conservation projects have taken him to the West Indies\, Central and South America\, and other travels to Europe and South Africa. He has served on boards of conservation organizations\, currently on the Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance\, and teaches field ornithology at the University of Michigan Biological Station.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) each year during the second week of February. This fun\, free\, family-friendly activity is a great way to engage both beginner and experienced birders in citizen science. \nParticipating in the count is as simple as counting birds for as little as fifteen minutes on one or more days of the count then reporting the results online at BirdCount.org. All of the observations submitted to the GBBC are automatically entered into eBird. The data are available to explore using a number of different tools on eBird.org and BirdCount.org. Regular eBird users can participate by entering checklists into eBird as usual during the count. \nLast year more than 142\,000 people from 135 countries reported more than 4\,200 species and over 17 million individual birds\, providing an incredible snapshot of winter bird populations and distribution in North America and beyond. Learn more about this fantastic citizen science event at http://gbbc.birdcount.org/.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training: Bird-Window Collision Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Between 365 and 988 million birds are killed annually by building collisions (Loss et al. 2014)\, and in the Greater Lansing area volunteers found more than 140 deceased birds below windows in 2018 during spring and fall monitoring periods.\n\nWindow collision monitoring will continue in 2019\, beginning March 15\, with volunteers monitoring buildings in downtown Lansing and on the Michigan State University campus. We are seeking volunteers who are able to walk a short route around one or more building(s) at least two times per week\, looking on the ground for injured or deceased birds. Volunteers will collect deceased bird specimens and record information about the building and location of the bird. The information we collect through these surveys will be used to inform building owners and businesses about best practices to reduce collisions with glass. Bird specimens are donated to the MSU Museum for research and/or display purposes. \n\nFor more information and to sign up for a volunteer training session\, contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org. \nThis volunteer training will take place in Meeting Room A in the basement of the Downtown Lansing Library.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: CCBS Workday
DESCRIPTION:The May 1 workday has been canceled due to predicted weather. \n  \nDo you enjoy spending time outdoors in nature? Are you into native plants\, birds\, butterflies\, and other members of the natural community? Join Michigan Audubon at our sanctuary stewardship workdays\, weekly on Wednesdays from April through October\, at Capital City Bird Sanctuary! We will combine fun facts and learning basic stewardship skills with taking care of our local bird sanctuary. \nThis little-known preserve is a great place to spot breeding Eastern Bluebird\, Rose-breasted Grosbeak\, Warbling Vireo\, and Eastern Kingbird. Please come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Bring work gloves\, water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand. This event is weather dependent. If an event is canceled\, all those who RSVP will receive an email by 5 p.m. the day before. \nContact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364 with any questions or to RSVP. \nWe hope to see you at the sanctuary! \nMeet at the volunteer parking lot at 6001 Delta River Dr.\, Lansing\, MI 48906. \nDirections:\nFrom Waverly: head west at the intersection of Waverly and Delta River Drive.
