SUMMARY:Volunteer Training: Bird-Window Collision Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Window collisions kill up to 1 billion birds a year making it the second largest threat to bird populations in the United States. The good news is that bird-window collisions are preventable when a few simple steps are taken and this can begin by gathering data. With fall migration upon us\, Michigan Audubon is looking for volunteers to monitor bird fatalities at buildings in the downtown Lansing area and on Michigan State University’s campus. \nCollecting data about bird-window collisions can help to assess high-risk buildings and inspire property owners to make changes to ensure greater safety for birds including moving plants away from windows and reducing artificial night lighting. \nMonitoring is ideally done in the early morning before specimens are removed by cleaning crews or eaten by predators\, but collection times are flexible. Specimens should be photographed and collected. Michigan Audubon will provide volunteers with necessary equipment. \nIf interested\, please join us for a volunteer training session on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. We will meet at the MSU Museum (409 W. Circle Dr.\, East Lansing\, MI 48824) for an introduction into window collision monitoring followed by a brief walk along one of the monitored routes. Volunteers are needed to walk collision monitoring routes from Aug. 15 to Oct. 31\, surveying each assigned building 2–3 times per week. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Project Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Swift Night Out — Lansing
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon on September 11 and celebrate urban wildlife while sipping on lemonade at Smith Floral & Greenhouses and watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. with the most Chimney Swift activity taking place 15 minutes before and after sunset. Please meet at the Smith Floral & Greenhouses’ parking lot at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:WPBO Motus Tower Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the dedication of the new Motus tower at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in memory of Linda Jo Klemens — birder\, conservationist\, teacher and friend. \nGrowing up in the forests and fields surrounding Hubbard Lake\, Linda was an avid conservationist from her earliest days. SUMMARY:Baker Sanctuary Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon at the Bernard W. Baker Sanctuary on Oct. 22 for a stewardship workday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.! If you have not been to this sanctuary\, it is a beautiful place with grassland\, wetland\, and forest habitat. We will be working to maintain the trails\, remove invasive autumn olive\, and will complete other tasks as needed. \nWe always welcome new volunteers\, and please know that we will not send you off on your own! Michigan Audubon staff will provide guidance and work alongside you. \nTo ensure that the experience is enjoyable and as fulfilling as possible for you\, please consider the following information when preparing for the workday: \n\nThe weather for the end of October is variable – check ahead of time and dress in layers. In the event of rain\, the volunteer day will be cancelled.\nPlease come prepared for outdoor work: wear long pants\, long sleeves\, close-toed shoes\, and a hat. Wear clothing you are not concerned about getting dirty or snagged on thorny shrubs. Quick dry clothing material is best\, as the vegetation and grasses can be quite wet from overnight dew. Wear layers to stay warm and to have the option to cool off if needed.\nThere is poison ivy in areas of the sanctuary so please be on the lookout if you are sensitive to this plant.\nMosquitoes and ticks are still active\, so perform a self-check when possible.\nWe will provide all tools\, but feel free to bring leather gloves or pruner tools if you have them.\nBring water\, snacks\, insect repellent\, and sunscreen\, although we will have extras on hand.\nThere isn’t any running water available at the sanctuary so you may want to bring wipes or antibacterial gel.\nWe will meet at the parking area/kiosk located on 15 Mile Road between T Drive North and Q Drive North\, at 21145 15 Mile Rd.\, Bellevue\, MI 49021.\n\nFeel free to enjoy the trails after the workday is complete and observe the birds and other wildlife that you are supporting through your hard work and time. We look forward to working with you! \nPlease RSVP to Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org if you plan to attend.
