SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop 2018 - Native Design for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon and Wesley Landon of Native Edge for an all-day workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. Wesley Landon is a licensed landscape architect focused on creating resilient\, innovative places which inspire and restore the native environmental fabric of the landscape. He will be sharing his knowledge through an interactive exercise and discussion on site selection and formal design using native plants. Participants should bring aerial images\, sketches of a future garden project\, and/or knowledge about specific site conditions to discuss during the exercise. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick-start a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-45248807401″ text=”>> Click here to register for the Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: The Art of Birding "by Ear" with Jim McGrath
DESCRIPTION:Studying field guides is valuable for identifying wild birds around you\, but what about the ones that you can’t see? When you gain the ability to “bird by ear\,” you propel yourself to a level of avian awareness that blows away identification by sight alone. Join Nature Discovery’s Jim McGrath for this visually and auditorially-stimulating presentation. Jim will introduce participants to word handles and other tips to help you recognize and remember a host of common birdsongs. At the presentation’s conclusion\, weather permitting\, participants are invited to step outside and begin to put their newly-gained skills to work. Don’t forget your binoculars! Don’t have binoculars? No worries! We’ll have extras on hand. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos MI\, 48864.

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Young Birders Camp
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to connect young people with the diverse bird communities of the Great Lakes Region\, Michigan Audubon\, in partnership with Alma College\, Chippewa Nature Center\, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be holding the first Great Lakes Young Birders Camp in 2018. \nThe inaugural camp will be based out of Alma College\, centrally located in Michigan\, in close proximity to forests\, grasslands\, wetlands\, and even the core breeding range for the rare Kirtland’s Warbler. The Great Lakes Young Birders Camp promotes the development of young birders who will be the next generation of birders\, scientists\, and conservation-minded citizens. Through experiences that develop expertise in avian natural history\, foster connections with their birding peers\, and highlight careers in bird conservation and ornithology\, participants will receive a foundation upon which they can successfully grow their passion for the natural world. \nCamp will run from June 24-28\, 2018\, for 16 high school students\, and includes travel to several birding hotspots in the mid-Michigan region\, as well as expert guest speakers from around the state. Each day will focus on an overarching topic that will provide participants a complete birding and conservation understanding. The goal of this camp is to connect not only young birders to each other but to connect them to the resources they need to become the next generation of conservationists. \nThe success and reach of this camp will not be possible without the support of sponsors\, whose generous tax-deductible donations will ensure that we can maintain an affordable tuition rate for our campers and offer need-based scholarships throughout the Great Lakes region. \nFind out more at: https://www.michiganaudubon.org/learn/young-birders/

SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a new citizen science project to take part in? Michigan Audubon is seeking volunteers to survey Chimney Swift roosts across the state during fall migration. Surveying for swifts is fun\, easy\, and suitable for all ages. \nMonitoring takes place at dusk as potentially hundreds of swifts come together in a tornado-like flock before entering the roost for the night. Finding potential roost locations can be an adventure in itself and starts with looking for large\, uncapped chimneys on historical buildings\, old factories\, schools\, churches\, courthouses\, or libraries. \nMichigan Audubon will provide training for those interested in monitoring roosts on August 7 at 8 p.m. The training session will begin at the MA office (located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Okemos\, MI 48864) and proceed to a nearby roost for participants to get a firsthand look at these birds. \nAlthough attracted to urban areas with high human population densities\, this species is often overlooked and its distribution and numbers in Michigan are poorly understood. By surveying these roosts\, we hope to gather information to help support conservation of critical roosting structures in Michigan. \nThe annual national survey occurs on the second weekends in August and September (Friday – Sunday nights)\, but we are looking for volunteers to survey at any time throughout August and September. Surveys begin 30 minutes before sunset and end when the last swift enters the chimney. \nLearn more about conducting the surveys\, find data sheets\, and enter survey data at www.michiganaudubon.org/bfc/chsw. Contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse with questions at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training: Bird-Window Collision Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Window collisions kill up to 1 billion birds a year making it the second largest threat to bird populations in the United States. The good news is that bird-window collisions are preventable when a few simple steps are taken and this can begin by gathering data. With fall migration upon us\, Michigan Audubon is looking for volunteers to monitor bird fatalities at buildings in the downtown Lansing area and on Michigan State University’s campus. \nCollecting data about bird-window collisions can help to assess high-risk buildings and inspire property owners to make changes to ensure greater safety for birds including moving plants away from windows and reducing artificial night lighting. \nMonitoring is ideally done in the early morning before specimens are removed by cleaning crews or eaten by predators\, but collection times are flexible. Specimens should be photographed and collected. Michigan Audubon will provide volunteers with necessary equipment. \nIf interested\, please join us for a volunteer training session on Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m. We will meet at Kelly’s Downtown (220 S. Washington Square\, Lansing\, MI 48933) for an introduction into window collision monitoring followed by a brief walk along one of the monitored routes. Another training session will take place at MSU\, on September 4 at 6 p.m\, meeting at the MSU Museum (room TBD). Volunteers are needed to walk collision monitoring routes from Aug. 15 to Oct. 31\, surveying each assigned building 2–3 times per week. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Project Coordinator Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.

SUMMARY:Swifts in the City: Presentation and Roost Watch
DESCRIPTION:Enjoying birds doesn’t always mean heading to the woods or shoreline. Join Michigan Audubon on August 22 at 7:30 p.m. for an in-depth look at Chimney Swifts\, an urban bird species that has suffered steep population declines in recent decades. \nOnce nesting in caves\, cliff faces\, and hollow trees\, this species has become dependent on man-made structures to simulate this habitat — most often opting for large chimneys. These aerial insectivores spend their days eating and bathing mid-flight\, returning to the roost at night to sleep. \nMichigan Audubon Conservation Program Coordinator Linnea Rowse will share a general overview of Chimney Swifts\, causes for their declining population\, ways you can help\, citizen science projects\, and more. \nFollowing the presentation\, we will caravan to a nearby roost\, where you can observe hundreds of Chimney Swifts flocking together in a tornado-like formation before dropping into the chimney for the night. \nThis free event will begin at the Michigan Audubon office\, located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos\, MI 48864. \nIf you have any questions please contact Linnea Rowse at lrowse@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7364.
