SUMMARY:PUMA Spotlight Event: How to Be a Good Purple Martin Landlord Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon is pleased to welcome Penny Briscoe to host the workshop\, “How to be a Good Purple Martin Landlord.” Briscoe is a local expert with more than 25 years’ experience. The workshop will be held at the Michigan Audubon office. Learn how to acquire and install suitable housing\, prepare nests for spring arrival\, and perform regular nest checks to ensure the survival of young birds. Briscoe will also share useful internet resources and discuss recording and submitting data. \nFour new purple martin houses on public property have been installed in the Lansing area\, with several more to come this spring. Volunteers are needed to monitor activity at these houses to ensure the birds are safe and thriving. If you don’t have a purple martin house yourself\, this is a great opportunity to “adopt” a colony! If you are interested in adopting a Lansing colony\, this workshop will provide excellent training on how to get started. Please contact us if you would like to adopt a purple martin house near you. \nPlease register for this free event: \n Register

SUMMARY:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS  is a great course for novice and intermediate birders alike.  It is also a wonderful place for photographers to learn more about their subjects. \nWe have “streamlined” the original class but it still covers topics including anatomy\, physiology\, migration\, song and flight in the Tuesday evening lectures. Saturday field trips are filled with bird identification\, behavior observations and tips on how to find those birds you seek. We usually travel by carpool to our field trip sites. \nThe class consists of 4 weeks of Tuesday evening lectures and Saturday morning field trips\, beginning on April 3.  Most field trips begin at 8 AM. We try to end as close to noon as possible. Not everyone makes it to all the classes and field trips. We definitely understand and will do our best to be  be sure you can makeup any topics you miss. \nAs in previous years\, the class size will be limited to 20 individuals. We have sold out for 4 years in a row so registering as early as you can is advisable. \nYou can register on the web site at the link below. \n[vc_button url=”https://www.miavianexperience.org/field-classes/” text=”REGISTER FOR ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Wege Speaker Series Presents Dr. J. Drew Lanham: On Being a Rare Bird
DESCRIPTION:The Wege Foundation will host the 22nd Wege Speaker Series on Thursday\, April 12 at 4pm at the Aquinas College Performing Arts Center. \nThis year’s speaker is Dr. J. Drew Lanham\, ornithologist\, conservationist and distinguished professor at Clemson University. Dr. Lanham is a widely published scientist\, author\, and poet with work appearing in numerous academic and literary journals. His latest book\, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature\, is currently available from Milkweed Editions. Dr. Lanham is also a member of the National Audubon Society and Audubon South Carolina boards\, along with several other environmental organizations. His research at Clemson University focuses on songbird ecology. \nIn Dr. Lanham’s book\, The Home Place\, he relates his love of nature and the world around him as a child growing up in Edgefield County\, South Carolina. As his passion for the environment takes flight\, Lanham asks what it means to be “the rare bird\, the oddity”—to find joy and freedom in the same land his ancestors were tied to by forced labor\, and then to be a black man in a profoundly white profession. \n“Birds and people need the same air\, same water\, same soil\,” said Dr. Lanham. “When we agree on that fact\, then conservation becomes the inclusive and intensely caring\, loving\, selfless thing that it is meant to be.” \nLanham’s presentation will provide insights into assuring equitable access to nature and outdoors experiences. \n“Dr. Lanham’s work directly relates to The West Foundation’s commitment to diversity\, equity and inclusion\,” said Mark Van Putten\, President\, and CEO of the Wege Foundation. “It is our hope that all individuals and families\, no matter their background or economic status\, can enjoy the benefits of nature and the environment.” \nCan’t attend in person? Grand Rapids Mayor Bliss will make Dr. Lanham’s lecture available for livesteaming on her Facebook account at   www.facebook.com/blissforgr \nPartners for the 22nd Wege Speaker Series event include: \n\nCity of Grand Rapids\nGrand Rapids Public Schools\nGrand Rapids Urban League\nLatina Network of West Michigan\nLINC UP\nMichigan Audubon\nNAACP Greater Grand Rapids Branch\nSierra Club Michigan Chapter\nWest Michigan Latino Community Coalition\n\nThe Aquinas College Performing Arts Center is located at 1703 Robinson Road S.E. in Grand Rapids. The public is invited and the event is free. A book signing will follow. Limited seating\, please register soon at aquinas.edu/wegespeaker \nAbout the Wege Foundation\nFounded in 1967 by Peter M. Wege\, son of Peter Martin Wege\, who started what is now Steelcase Inc.\, the Wege Foundation focuses on funding good works that enhance the lives of the people and preserve the health of the environment in West Michigan. The Wege Foundation’s Five Pillars\, or areas of interest\, are: education\, environment\, arts & culture\, health care\, and human services. For more information\, go to wegefoundation.org

DESCRIPTION:This year will mark the 30th Annual Spring Fling: WPBO’s Celebration of Bird Migration when members and their guests “migrate” to Paradise\, Michigan and the Whitefish Point area to visit with old friends\, both human and avian. Many activities are being planned for another refreshing weekend of birding experiences. \nWe are looking forward to a very special celebration of spring migration this year at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory. This year we are excited to mark some important milestones as we prepare to welcome birds and birders back for another spectacular season of birding at the Point\, arguably one of Michigan’s most beloved birding destinations. Not only does 2018 mark the 30th anniversary of Spring Fling\, but it also marks the 30th spring season of the official owl banding program. In honor of these achievements\, our speakers\, presentations\, tours and other activities will highlight the uniqueness of the Point\, celebrate the achievements of the observatory’s past\, and explore exciting new developments in its future. \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/spring-fling-2018-tickets-41044455070″ text=”>> Click here to register for Spring Fling 2018″ size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Thornapple Woodpecker Festival
DESCRIPTION:Thornapple Woodpecker Festival\, now in its eighth year\, provides for festival-goers a paved trail along the Thornapple River with birding guides that has an established population of the Redheaded Woodpecker as well as the other more common Eastern woodpeckers.  The trees are short on the south side of the trail so warblers and swallows are easy to see. There are ponds and marsh areas where waterfowl can be found.  A golf cart is provided for those that would rather ride.  Speakers on nature-related topics are available throughout the day\, as well as nature related crafts. The 1922 Trail Depot will be open to show the history of the railroad during the day.  Sponsored by the Grand Rapids Audubon Club. \nFor questions\, please contact Jean Lamoreaux at (616) 293-8666\, or email her at cal3jean@gmail.com. \nFor more information\, visit http://woodpeckerfest.webs.com or find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Thornapple-Woodpecker-Festival-189561891069751/

SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop 2018 - Native Design for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join Michigan Audubon and Wesley Landon of Native Edge for an all-day workshop focused on the critical relationship between birds and native plants\, all through the lens of intentional garden design. In this workshop\, participants will learn why birds need native plants\, which native plants are “powerhouses” for birds\, and how to use native plants in both formal and informal landscapes. A common concern when adding native plants to the landscape is their “weedy” or “messy” look – this year’s workshop is focused on bucking this misconception by teaching participants how to select native plants to fit a desired design aesthetic and still support birds\, pollinators\, and wildlife. Wesley Landon is a licensed landscape architect focused on creating resilient\, innovative places which inspire and restore the native environmental fabric of the landscape. He will be sharing his knowledge through an interactive exercise and discussion on site selection and formal design using native plants. Participants should bring aerial images\, sketches of a future garden project\, and/or knowledge about specific site conditions to discuss during the exercise. \nThis workshop will feature an indoor educational session followed by an outdoor walk to view good examples of a bird-friendly landscape. In the afternoon\, the group will travel to Wildtype in Mason\, where owner Bill Schneider will give a tour of this unique native plant nursery and participants will have the opportunity to shop and explore during one of the few days this great resource is open to the public. Participants will take home a resource folder packed with helpful tips and a native shrub to kick-start a backyard habitat transformation. A buffet lunch is included with registration along with a packet of take-home resources. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors as this event will take place rain or shine. \nIf you love watching birds\, please join us to learn how you can support our birds by stewarding healthy native habitat around your home\, office\, school\, or neighborhood. \nCost: $25 for Michigan Audubon or Woldumar Nature Center members; $35 for non-members of either organization \n[vc_button url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-backyard-bird-habitat-workshop-tickets-45248807401″ text=”>> Click here to register for the Backyard Bird Habitat Workshop” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

SUMMARY:Seminar Series: The Art of Birding "by Ear" with Jim McGrath
DESCRIPTION:Studying field guides is valuable for identifying wild birds around you\, but what about the ones that you can’t see? When you gain the ability to “bird by ear\,” you propel yourself to a level of avian awareness that blows away identification by sight alone. Join Nature Discovery’s Jim McGrath for this visually and auditorially-stimulating presentation. Jim will introduce participants to word handles and other tips to help you recognize and remember a host of common birdsongs. At the presentation’s conclusion\, weather permitting\, participants are invited to step outside and begin to put their newly-gained skills to work. Don’t forget your binoculars! Don’t have binoculars? No worries! We’ll have extras on hand. \nThis event is part of the Michigan Audubon Seminar Series. Seminars are free and open to the public. Sessions take place on the second Monday of each month from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Michigan Audubon office located at 2310 Science Parkway\, Suite 200\, Okemos MI\, 48864.
