SUMMARY:Those Amazing Birds Program
DESCRIPTION:Join Ed Post for the third presentation of Audubon Society Kalamazoo’s 2017-2018 program season as he focuses on “Those Amazing Birds.”  This illustrated program looks at the amazing diversity and fascinating natural history of North American birds through the eyes of a dedicated bird photographer. We’ll look at the specialized anatomy of birds\, how they care for their young\, and how they survive in extremes like the frozen tundra and blistering desert. The poetic beauty of birds will color the informative narrative about our feathered friends. \nEd Post has been a serious photographer for over 30 years. He specializes in landscape and nature photography\, but also worked as a part-time newspaper and sports photographer for 15 years.  Ed frequently teaches photography classes\, leads photography trips\, and conducts workshops.  He is widely published and he displays his work at local galleries in West Michigan. You can see some of Ed’s images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/edpost/. \nYou are invited to meet and hear Ed on November 27 at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. The program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:Program: Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise
DESCRIPTION:Join Craig Sherwood for the fourth presentation of ASK’s new program season as he discusses “Relationship Between Ravens and the Desert Tortoise.” There are parts of this planet where change happens so slowly it can be measured more easily over millennia versus decades or days.  The Mojave Desert was until recently\, one of these ancient refuges from change; an ecosystem where the flora and fauna have become so highly specialized living in nearly uninhabitable conditions they often lack the ability to adapt to a dynamic situation. In our current age\, the iconic desert tortoise is facing a daunting challenge as it is confronted with swelling numbers of humans and the predators that prosper in their wake.  The common raven (Corvus corax) is one of these predators and the species is experiencing something of a golden age as human densities continue to increase in one of North America’s most inhospitable landscapes. \nYou will be in for a crash course on the biology and life history of the Mojave Desert Tortoise and explore how it has become intricately entwined with the explosive success of the largest species in the Corvid family.  We will look at what is being done now and where new techniques and technology are taking us as we attempt to reframe how we think about the most intelligent and opportunistic avian species in the Southwest.  What we learn in the desert may very well help to prepare us for tackling future corvid-related challenges right here at home. \nCraig Sherwood has been working in the field since 2010 after completing his undergraduate studies in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology at Michigan State University.  Seasonal work has allowed him to live and work in places from the Canadian Rockies and Interior Alaska to the scorching landscapes of the Mojave Desert. Years of work with desert tortoises has inevitably led to an interest in ravens.  He now serves as an advisor and contractor to Hardshell Labs.  Hardshell Labs is currently leading the field by spearheading the development of a variety of innovative\, non-lethal aversive conditioning techniques for dealing with raven problems. \nYou are invited to join us to meet and hear Craig Sherwood on January 22\, 2018\, at the People’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. Our program starts at 7:30 PM and is preceded by a social time with light refreshments at 7:00 PM. Guests and the general public are encouraged to attend. Handicap parking and access is at either the front or rear entrance of the building. Please remember to bring your own coffee mug to reduce dishwashing.

SUMMARY:PUMA Spotlight Event: How to Be a Good Purple Martin Landlord Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Audubon is pleased to welcome Penny Briscoe to host the workshop\, “How to be a Good Purple Martin Landlord.” Briscoe is a local expert with more than 25 years’ experience. The workshop will be held at the Michigan Audubon office. Learn how to acquire and install suitable housing\, prepare nests for spring arrival\, and perform regular nest checks to ensure the survival of young birds. Briscoe will also share useful internet resources and discuss recording and submitting data. \nFour new purple martin houses on public property have been installed in the Lansing area\, with several more to come this spring. Volunteers are needed to monitor activity at these houses to ensure the birds are safe and thriving. If you don’t have a purple martin house yourself\, this is a great opportunity to “adopt” a colony! If you are interested in adopting a Lansing colony\, this workshop will provide excellent training on how to get started. Please contact us if you would like to adopt a purple martin house near you. \nPlease register for this free event: \n Register

SUMMARY:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS
DESCRIPTION:ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS  is a great course for novice and intermediate birders alike.  It is also a wonderful place for photographers to learn more about their subjects. \nWe have “streamlined” the original class but it still covers topics including anatomy\, physiology\, migration\, song and flight in the Tuesday evening lectures. Saturday field trips are filled with bird identification\, behavior observations and tips on how to find those birds you seek. We usually travel by carpool to our field trip sites. \nThe class consists of 4 weeks of Tuesday evening lectures and Saturday morning field trips\, beginning on April 3.  Most field trips begin at 8 AM. We try to end as close to noon as possible. Not everyone makes it to all the classes and field trips. We definitely understand and will do our best to be  be sure you can makeup any topics you miss. \nAs in previous years\, the class size will be limited to 20 individuals. We have sold out for 4 years in a row so registering as early as you can is advisable. \nYou can register on the web site at the link below. \n[vc_button url=”https://www.miavianexperience.org/field-classes/” text=”REGISTER FOR ORNITHOLOGY: AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF BIRDS” size=”” align=”left” type=”midnight” outlined=”0″ icon=”” target=”_blank”]

DESCRIPTION:The Wege Foundation will host the 22nd Wege Speaker Series on Thursday\, April 12 at 4pm at the Aquinas College Performing Arts Center. \nThis year’s speaker is Dr. J. Drew Lanham\, ornithologist\, conservationist and distinguished professor at Clemson University. Dr. Lanham is a widely published scientist\, author\, and poet with work appearing in numerous academic and literary journals. His latest book\, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature\, is currently available from Milkweed Editions. Dr. Lanham is also a member of the National Audubon Society and Audubon South Carolina boards\, along with several other environmental organizations. His research at Clemson University focuses on songbird ecology. \nIn Dr. Lanham’s book\, The Home Place\, he relates his love of nature and the world around him as a child growing up in Edgefield County\, South Carolina. As his passion for the environment takes flight\, Lanham asks what it means to be “the rare bird\, the oddity”—to find joy and freedom in the same land his ancestors were tied to by forced labor\, and then to be a black man in a profoundly white profession. \n“Birds and people need the same air\, same water\, same soil\,” said Dr. Lanham. “When we agree on that fact\, then conservation becomes the inclusive and intensely caring\, loving\, selfless thing that it is meant to be.” \nLanham’s presentation will provide insights into assuring equitable access to nature and outdoors experiences. \n“Dr. Lanham’s work directly relates to The West Foundation’s commitment to diversity\, equity and inclusion\,” said Mark Van Putten\, President\, and CEO of the Wege Foundation. “It is our hope that all individuals and families\, no matter their background or economic status\, can enjoy the benefits of nature and the environment.” \nCan’t attend in person? Grand Rapids Mayor Bliss will make Dr. Lanham’s lecture available for livesteaming on her Facebook account at   www.facebook.com/blissforgr \nPartners for the 22nd Wege Speaker Series event include: \n\nCity of Grand Rapids\nGrand Rapids Public Schools\nGrand Rapids Urban League\nLatina Network of West Michigan\nLINC UP\nMichigan Audubon\nNAACP Greater Grand Rapids Branch\nSierra Club Michigan Chapter\nWest Michigan Latino Community Coalition\n\nThe Aquinas College Performing Arts Center is located at 1703 Robinson Road S.E. in Grand Rapids. The public is invited and the event is free. A book signing will follow. Limited seating\, please register soon at aquinas.edu/wegespeaker \nAbout the Wege Foundation\nFounded in 1967 by Peter M.
