SUMMARY:Petoskey Regional Audubon Society Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Hindle-Ross Trails – Petoskey Regional Audubon Society\nTuesday\, August 11\, 2015 10:00 am \nLeaders: Debbie Hindle & Ken Ross\nJoin PRAS members Debbie Hindle and Ken Ross on a guided walk along their two miles of well-maintained trails through rolling meadows and woodlands near Cross Village. Enjoy views of the Waugoshance Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula\, and linger at the interesting seating areas they have created. Through their creativity and love for the land\, they have turned their 80-acre property into a wonderful place to quietly observe nature and take leisurely walks. On the July walk 9 participants identified 29 species of birds and also saw deer\, wildflowers and several species of butterflies including Monarch and Red Admiral. Bring binoculars\, bug spray\, sunscreen and hat. Don’t forget your camera\, the views are amazing. Weather is changeable so bring layers. Plan on a 2-3 hour stroll on gently undulating terrain.  Dutch treat/group lunch to follow\, at Legs Inn or Moose Jaw Junction\, for those interested. \nWEATHER NOTE: Our membership covers a large geographic area. Just because it’s raining in your location\, it doesn’t mean that rain is also at the field trip location. When checking the weather report\, check for Cross Village weather to get an idea of what the day will hold. Our hosts and Audubon members Ken and Debbie live on the property and will be there rain or shine. \nIMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS: Please be courteous to the residents along this local\, unpaved road. DRIVE SLOWLY to  keep the level of dust and noise down. It is important to maintain good relations with the neighbors. Even better\, please carpool if you’re able. \nDirections:  From Cross Village go east on Levering Road about 1.5 miles\, then turn south on Lookout Road.  Go approx. one-half mile to the top of Lookout Road where it dead-ends\, and turn into the field at the right to park.  The walk will start from there. \nFrom the south\, take US-31 north to Levering Road. Go east 10 miles. Pass Hill Road on your left. Turn south on Lookout road and follow directions above.

SUMMARY:Grand Rapids Audubon Club Event
DESCRIPTION:Chapter Event – Fall Warblers at Reeds Lake – Grand Rapids Audubon Club Event\nSeptember 26\, 2015 8:00 AM\nTrip Leader: Steve Minard\nReeds Lake is still one of the better spots in the area for warblers. Catching the right time does seem to be trickier and the peak fall dates seem to have shifted later. Hopefully this date works\, if it does\, we can expect about 10 species of fall warblers. In recent years\, good numbers of Blackpoll\, Yellow-rumped\, Nashville\, Black-throated Green\, and Tennessee Warblers have been sighted here. The combination of residences\, lake\, marsh\, and remnant woodlands does seem to produce a variety of birds at this location. \nEssentials: Meet on the northwest end of Darby where it meets Reeds Lake Blvd near the bluff. Reach Darby off Bonnell. Bonnell is off Lake Dr midway between Breton and Hall St in East Grand Rapids at 8:00 AM. We plan to walk a 1-mile route and retrace our steps to Darby. \nSafety Hazards: Bugs are possible and poison ivy grows along side the road. Take precautions. The road is open to traffic\, so watch for cars\, bikes\, lawnmowers and ORVs. Please exercise caution on the roads driving to and from the meeting place. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Cranes\, Color\, and Cabernet Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cranes\, Color\, Cabernet\, and Cider Too\nThe Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary (which is Michigan Audubon’s largest sanctuary) came into being 60 years ago. The anniversary will be commemorated at this year’s Cranes\, Colors\, and Cabernet festival at the sanctuary on Saturday October 17. \nActivities celebrating the Greater Sandhill Crane are hosted by both Jackson Audubon Society (JAS) and Sandhill Crane Vineyards as part of the event in northeast Jackson County. During the festival\, members of JAS will lead driving tours to see the cranes as they forage for food\, and walking tours of the sanctuary trails. The winery will have restaurant specials and provide activities at its location at 4724 Walz Road near Jackson. \nThe event begins at noon when JAS naturalists lead one-hour walking tours of the 1000-plus-acre Haehnle Sanctuary. The last tour will depart at 2:00 p.m. The tour will take participants to the north side of Mud Lake Marsh\, a location rarely visited by humans and a staging area for migrating cranes. \nA lecture on the natural history of the Sandhill Crane will be presented at 4:00 p.m. by a Haehnle naturalist. At 4:30 p.m. participants can take part in the “crane caravan tour.” JAS members will lead this carpool tour to the nearby farm fields\, providing the opportunity to see the cranes at a closer range than at the sanctuary. The carpool will return to Haehnle at approximately 5:30 p.m.\, allowing participants to watch the “fly-in\,” which is when cranes fly directly overhead as they return to the marsh for the evening. Advance notice of your participation in the caravan tour is requested and can be made by contacting the Michigan Audubon office at 517-580-7364. \nViewing of the cranes returning to their roost will occur at the Sanctuary’s observation hill overlooking Mud Lake Marsh until dusk. Haehnle Sanctuary is located directly across the road from 9011 Seymour Road\, northeast of Jackson. \nSchedule: \n12 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist\n\n2 p.m. – Nature tour with Haehnle naturalist \n\n4 p.m. – Celebration of sixty years / Natural History of Sandhill Cranes \n\n4:30 p.m. – Car tour to see Sandhill Cranes feeding in fields \n\n5:30 to\nDark        – Watch cranes coming back to roost in Haehnle Sanctuary at Wing Observation Hill\, Haehnle Sanctuary

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Viewing at Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Crane Viewing – Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary\nOctober-November \nSandhill Crane viewing is available at the Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary northeast of Jackson\, with volunteers from the Jackson Audubon Society will be on hand weekends October through November from 4 p.m. until dusk. Volunteers will have binoculars and scopes available to help you view the birds. \nIt can take several hours for all the cranes to return to the roost when they fly in for the evening. But when the cranes fly out in the morning right at sunrise\, all the birds pretty much leave at once\, which makes for a spectacular viewing opportunity at Haehnle Sanctuary. \nThe Haehnle Sanctuary parking area is located across the road from 9011 Seymour Road in Jackson County. The number of cranes roosting at Haehnle is dependent on the water level in Mud Lake. On Tuesdays\, the Sanctuary’s website is updated with the latest number of birds counted. Visit the website at haehnlesanctuary.org. It also has maps and directions to assist you in finding the sanctuary.
