SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Oakland Bird Alliance: Saving Songbirds
DESCRIPTION:Saving Songbirds (Nicole Kvasnovsky) \nOBA meetings open at 6:30 PM and talks begin at 7:00 PM. \nCity of Auburn Hills Community Center – 3350 E Seyburn Dr\, Auburn Hills\, MI 48326 \nEach year\, countless songbirds suffer injuries due to human-related causes. The Bird Center of Michigan specializes in their rehabilitation while also educating the public on ways to reduce these threats. This lecture will cover the most common reasons birds are admitted to our center\, including window collisions\, cat attacks\, and nest disruptions. We will discuss how these birds are treated\, the steps you can take to prevent such incidents\, and what to do if you find an injured or orphaned bird. By understanding these challenges and implementing simple preventive measures\, we can work together to protect Michigan’s songbirds and support their survival in the wild. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance - Walks at Nichols Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Fall Migration Walks at Nichols Arboretum\nThursday\, August 27 @ 8:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n\n\n Did you know there are more individual warblers migrating through our region in the fall than in the spring? Since these are the “confusing fall warblers\,” some birders leave fall migration to experts. Not us at WBNA! Join us each fall Thursday morning at Nichols Arboretum to find and identify fall migrant warblers\, thrushes\, vireos\, waterfowl\, and many others. Come at 8:00 AM and stay as long as you like. \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. New to birding? Bird curious? No binoculars? No problem! There is no better way to learn than to get out in the field with experienced birders that love to help. Plus\, you get to meet awesome people. Absolutely everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out. We will have many pairs of quality binoculars on hand for anyone to use. \nDirections: Meet at the east end of the Arboretum at the Dow Prairie entrance on Riverview Dr. From Geddes Ave.\, turn north onto Riverview and stay right until it terminates at the cul-de-sac. (Map) \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you can sign up to receive the eBird checklist during the walk as well). \nLeader: Juliet Berger \n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Kal Haven Trail Walks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays in April & May – 9:00 AM \nKal Haven Trail\, Kalamazoo \nContinuing the years’ long tradition of Tuesday morning trail walks\, our weekly Kal-Haven Trail walks will be on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM in April and May\, starting April 7. We will meet and start at the trailhead on North 10th Street between G and H Avenues. A few of us walk 2.5 miles to the usually very birdy marsh at 8th Street and then back for a total of 5 miles\, but anyone can cut that short and turn around at any time. There will not be a “leader\,” although someone will be keeping a species list. \nFeel free to arrange your own spotting or shuttling of cars. The Kal-Haven Trail walks are handicap accessible. \nIf you would like to be in an email group to be notified of the latest status of the walks or to discuss weather conditions\, please send an email to Donna Keller at askpresident@kalamazooaudubon.org. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Guardians of the Night: Why Darkness Matters
DESCRIPTION:ASK monthly meetings are held on the 4th Monday of September-April (except for December) \nA social time begins at 6:30 with the program beginning at 7:00. \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 North 10th Street\, Kalamazoo. \nPlease join us on Monday\, October 26th as we explore the importance of nighttime and the vital role darkness plays in healthy ecosystems. From bats and moths to birds\, frogs\, insects\, and nocturnal plants\, countless living things depend on natural darkness to feed\, navigate\, reproduce\, rest\, and survive. Participants will learn how excessive artificial light can disrupt wildlife\, change natural behaviors\, and affect the delicate relationships that connect nighttime species. \nBirds are an important part of this story. Millions of migratory birds travel at night\, using natural cues such as the stars\, moon\, and Earth’s magnetic field to navigate. Bright lights can attract and disorient migrating birds\, increasing the risk of collisions with buildings and exhausting birds already on a long\, difficult journey. \nWe will discuss the international dark sky movement\, which is an effort to reduce light pollution by promoting responsible outdoor lighting and protecting naturally dark night skies. Protecting dark skies preserves star visibility\, supports wildlife\, and reduces unnecessary energy use from excessive artificial light. We’ll then zoom in to local movements such as the Lights Out campaign launched by ASK this fall. \nJessica Hagen is a local science teacher at The Montessori School and a nature enthusiast passionate about preserving nighttime ecology. She will be joined by a few students from the Super Epic Earth Defender (SEED) student group. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Kal Haven Trail Walks
