SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Kal Haven Trail Walks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays in April & May – 9:00 AM \nKal Haven Trail\, Kalamazoo \nContinuing the years’ long tradition of Tuesday morning trail walks\, our weekly Kal-Haven Trail walks will be on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM in April and May\, starting April 7. We will meet and start at the trailhead on North 10th Street between G and H Avenues. A few of us walk 2.5 miles to the usually very birdy marsh at 8th Street and then back for a total of 5 miles\, but anyone can cut that short and turn around at any time. There will not be a “leader\,” although someone will be keeping a species list. \nFeel free to arrange your own spotting or shuttling of cars. The Kal-Haven Trail walks are handicap accessible. \nIf you would like to be in an email group to be notified of the latest status of the walks or to discuss weather conditions\, please send an email to Donna Keller at askpresident@kalamazooaudubon.org. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Holland Audubon Club: No Bird Brains Here Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Holland Audubon Club Meeting \nSept 8th at Hope Church\, 7pm (6:30 social)\, 77 W. 11th\, St. Holland MI \n“No Birdbrains Here: The Latest on Bird Learning\, Instinct and Intelligence” by Susan Schneider\, PhD A fascinating thing has been revealed: birds can learn from consequences\, as we and many other species can. Baby chicks learn to peck accurately\, wild mockingbirds learn to recognize individual people\, and pigeons have learned to categorize art and music. Even instinctive behaviors like imprinting can be more flexible than scientists used to think\, and songbird song appears particularly malleable. \nJoin Holland Audubon Club at our season opener as we explore bird learning and intelligence\, from everyday foraging\, to learning through observing\, to tool use. Susan will share her keen knowledge on how such adaptability may be critical as wild birds attempt to adjust to the many threats they face today and how scientists also take advantage of this powerful learning ability to help save endangered species. A poignant\, timely program you’ll find intriguing and not to be missed. A Behavioral and Bio-psychologist\, Dr. Schneider is an expert on learning principles\, with many academic publications. \nShe’s also an avid birder and field trip leader. A Kalamazoo Audubon Board member\, Schneider has served on the boards of four Audubon chapters and been president of two. Her award-winning book\, The Science of Consequences\, covers basic learning principles\, their role in nature-nurture relations\, and their broad range of applications. It was a selection of the Scientific American Book Club.\nA member of the psychology faculty at Western Michigan University\, Schneider is currently focused on applying learning principles to the climate crisis. \nhollandaudubon@gmail.com \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. DESCRIPTION:Thursday Fall Migration Walks at Nichols Arboretum\nThursday\, August 27 @ 8:00 am – 11:00 am \n\n\n\n Did you know there are more individual warblers migrating through our region in the fall than in the spring? Since these are the “confusing fall warblers\,” some birders leave fall migration to experts. Not us at WBNA! Come at 8:00 AM and stay as long as you like. \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. New to birding? Bird curious? No binoculars? No problem! Absolutely everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out. We will have many pairs of quality binoculars on hand for anyone to use. \nDirections: Meet at the east end of the Arboretum at the Dow Prairie entrance on Riverview Dr. From Geddes Ave.\, turn north onto Riverview and stay right until it terminates at the cul-de-sac. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: WBNA - Swift Night Out
DESCRIPTION:Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance and the City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation invite you to join us for our Annual Ann Arbor-Washtenaw County Chimney Swift count.  Watching Chimney Swifts enter their roosts at dusk is a spectacular sight (video and more information here). Volunteers will choose a known Chimney Swift roosting location and stake it out before dusk\, counting the Swifts as they enter the chimney\, as darkness falls. You can sign up for one night/one location at a time\, or count each night of the weekend. \nChimney Swifts are in steep decline across North America and this volunteer effort is an important part of understanding how the species is faring in Washtenaw County. Habitat loss is one reason\, as well as decline of the insects they eat\, and other unknown factors. We are helping bird science by conducting this count! This is a great experience for non-birders—bring your friends and family to show them how these very cool aerial insectivores share our cities and towns with us. \nNOTE: Occasionally the Swifts will not use a particular location on a given night due to a predator such as a Cooper’s Hawk\, or another issue. In that case\, “No Swifts” will still be good information for us! \nMore information about how to participate\, including a sign-up form\, will be posted on their event site\, so please check back as the weekend gets closer.  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. Previous trips here have also yielded an occasional surprise species. \nMeet at the Northeast Trail entrance along Winchell Avenue (3702-3716 Winchell Ave\, Kalamazoo 49008) at 8:00am. Trails will be a mix of gravel\, dirt\, and grass with gentle slopes\, except a bit of climbing from Winchell Avenue to the trail. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Oakland Bird Alliance: Fall Warbler Walk at Heritage Park
DESCRIPTION:Fall Warblers\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 13\, 2026\, \n8:00am-12:00pm\n\n\nHeritage Park\, Farmington Hills\n\n\nLeader: Mike Mencotti (mmencotti9@gmail.com) \nLet’s find those early migrating warblers. vireos\, and flycatchers\, and ???. Heritage Park is reliably a wonderful spot for fall migration\, so let’s see what is out there in late August. Trails are well groomed at this multi-use facility. Plan on a leisurely 2-mile hike. Insect repellant is suggested. Modern restroom facilities. Space is somewhat limited and these trips usually fill up early. \nThis Farmington Hills park is located on Farmington Road\, south of 11 Mile. \n\nOBA Field Trips are free and open to the general public. Depending on the destination\, entry fees may be required. We welcome all levels of birdwatchers including those with disabilities.  \nRemember to dress for the weather. Trips occurring during a winter storm warning are automatically canceled. \nField Trip Guidelines \n1. Trip size will be strictly limited. The number of participants will be set by the trip leaders based on the location that we are visiting. \n2. All participants must pre-register with the trip leader(s) so we can get an accurate count. This will be on a first-come\, first-served basis. We will sometimes have to indicate that a trip is full. \n3. If you are not feeling well\, you should not attend the field trip. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

If you have questions\, please reach out to the event organizers or the contact information provided in the event description.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance - Walks at Nichols Arboretum
Join us each fall Thursday morning at Nichols Arboretum to find and identify fall migrant warblers\, thrushes\, vireos\, waterfowl\, and many others. Come at 8:00 AM and stay as long as you like. \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. New to birding? Bird curious? No binoculars? No problem! There is no better way to learn than to get out in the field with experienced birders that love to help. Plus\, you get to meet awesome people. (Map) \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you can sign up to receive the eBird checklist during the walk as well). \nLeader: Juliet Berger \n\n\n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:Swift Night Out September 18 & 21 at Smith Floral - Lansing
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a Swift Night Out with Michigan Audubon on Friday\, September 18th or Monday\, September 21st and celebrate urban wildlife at Smith Floral & Greenhouses by watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost. \nThis free\, family-friendly event features an amazing spectacle at dusk\, when hundreds of Chimney Swifts flock together in a tornado-like formation\, flying in increasingly tighter circles before dropping into the chimney where they roost for the night. \nThese urban birds have suffered a steep population decline in recent decades due to loss of habitat\, insecticide use\, climate change\, and more. Information on how you can help this species\, including citizen science projects\, will be available at the event. \nOf course\, in true birdwatching fashion\, we wait with bated breath each evening—because swifts are wild creatures\, and they don’t always RSVP. But that just makes the moment they do appear even more thrilling! Please bring a chair if you would like to sit while watching. \nThe event begins at 7:30 p.m. with time to chat with fellow bird lovers and ask Michigan Audubon’s Conservation Manager\, Chad Machinski\, M.S.\, all your swift-related questions—he’ll be on hand to share his knowledge and enthusiasm! Most Chimney Swift activity will start just before sunset and continue through dusk. \nPlease meet at the Smith Floral & Greenhouses’ parking lot at 1124 E. Mt. Hope Ave.\, Lansing\, MI 48910. \n*ALTERNATE ROUTE DUE TO CONSTRUCTION – Access from Mt. Hope may not be available during this event. Please visit our site for directions and detour updates. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Michigan Audubon Conservation Manager Chad Machinski at cmachinski@michiganaudubon.org or 517-580-7564 or Kristy Taylor\, Events & Outreach Manager at ktaylor@michiganaudubon.org
