DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY: Big Rapids Festival of the Arts Bird Week \nPresentation: Work at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory\npresented by Michigan Audubon Director of Research Max Henschell \nWednesday\, February 18 at 6:00pm \nArtworks\, 106 N. Michigan Avenue \nOriginally from Michigan\, Max Henschell’s love for birds began with a Magnolia Warbler on Isle Royale. Since then\, he has counted waterbirds at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory\, marshbirds at Seney National Wildlife Refuge\, and hawks at Brockway Mountain. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Applied Ecology from Michigan Technological University and his Ph.D in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Max has studied grassland and forest bird ecology in Wisconsin as well as worked with large datasets\, including eBird\, GBIF\, and PRISM climate data\, to predict changes in avian communities across the continental United States due to climate change. His research interests are in migration ecology\, habitat use\, and the effects of anthropogenic activity on bird communities. When he’s not at work\, he spends as much time as possible outdoors with his young family. \nJoin Max as he relates important work that happens at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory\, including highlights from 2025\, historical\ntrends\, and future projects. \n  \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress
DESCRIPTION:Program: Birds & Climate Change: An Update on Progress \nAudubon Society of Kalamazoo \nMonday\, February 23\, 2026\, 6:30pm \nPeople’s Church\, 1758 10th Street N\, Kalamazoo\, MI 49009\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that humanity has only four years to cut global greenhouse gas emissions nearly in half\, and the consequences of failure are dire – for us and for the natural world. Birds are already feeling the heat\, and examples will be shared. Anyone who’s done a Christmas Bird Count or submitted to eBird has helped document climate-related changes in bird distribution\, migration\, and nesting. Climate initiatives from Audubon include National’s award-winning climate action guide and webpage\, and many local chapter efforts. Good news is that quite a few proven climate solutions are available\, already having an impact. But they need to be implemented\, and everyone can help with that. We can make a difference for ourselves\, the birds we love\, and our irreplaceable living planet. \nOur speaker and ASK Board member\, Dr. Susan Schneider\, has served on the boards of four Audubon chapters and been president of two. Her years of experience in climate change work include outreach\, community projects\, organizing\, academic and nonacademic publications\, and extensive public speaking. As Senior Scientist for the sustainability nonprofit Root Solutions\, Schneider helped design projects\, and coauthored two chapters in the organization’s guidebook\, Making Shift Happen: Designing for Successful Environmental Behavior Change. Recent outreach includes a podcast for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a monthly “green psychology” blog. Schneider’s award-winning book for the public\, The Science of Consequences\, covers basic learning principles and their broad range of applications\, including sustainability. Schneider is on the faculty at Western Michigan University and serves on its Climate Change Working Group. She also serves on the Tools of Change Landmark Peer Review Panel for Climate Change\, a psychology for sustainability board\, and the board of the nonprofit Green Driving America.

SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Holland Audubon Club Meeting - Misadventures of a Wannabe Wildlife Photographer
DESCRIPTION:Holland Audubon Club Meeting – “Misadventures of a Wannabe Wildlife Photographer” by Marty Keirnan \nTuesday\, March 10th\, 7:00pm \nHope Church\, 77 W. 11th St.\, Holland\, MI \nMasks optional but encouraged if you’re sniffly \nOver the past year\, Marty has been quietly clicking away on his camera\, all over Michigan\, capturing some wonderful images of birds and wildlife near and far…some in our own backyard. Come and enjoy some fantastic glimpses of these amazing creatures\, and the vistas we’ve appreciated over the years in our beautiful state of Michigan. Marty thoroughly enjoys returning year after year to some special places that offer the best shots and most of the time he’s rewarded with wonderful pictures he’s shared with us; some images you’ve seen in our newsletter over the years have been from him. Join us as he cracks open his vault to show us many of his greatest bird pictures from 2025 and beyond. \nA Holland native\, Marty earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Grand Valley then did some graduate work in Zoology at Eastern Michigan University\, where he briefly taught Zoology as an assistant. He ultimately found his calling in the field of Quality as a Quality Engineer and Quality Manager in Automotive and Aerospace manufacturing for about 35 years. Marty’s first love of Biology was never far\, however\, and\, drawn to nature photography\, got his first SLR in college\, and\, honing his skills over the years\, broadened his experience\, especially since 2020 when forced into early retirement due to Covid. The main subjects of his “focus” are birds and wildlife\, wildflowers and macro work. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Grand Rapids Audubon - Monthly Meeting - Great Lakes Piping Plover
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Piping Plover with Sarah Saunders\, National Audubon Society \nMonday\, March 30\, 7:30 – 8:30 PM\nAquinas College Donnelly Conference Center\n157 Woodward Lane SE\, Grand Rapids\, MI\, 49506 \nMonthly membership meetings are FREE and open to the public. \nWe continue our theme of conservation spaces and wildlife by examining another Michigan wildlife recovery success story. The Great Lakes Piping Plover\, a federally endangered shorebird\, has made a remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts. Join us on March 30th as Sarah Saunders tells us about the amazing comeback of this favorite Michigan species. Once reduced to just 12 breeding pairs in the 1980s\, this population now exceeds 80 pairs\, with record-breaking breeding seasons in recent years. This success is a testament to the power of science-driven conservation and the collaboration of researchers\, land managers\, and community volunteers on the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team. In this talk\, Sarah will highlight the key strategies that have fueled this recovery\, including nest monitoring and protection\, predator management\, annual banding\, captive-rearing\, and education and outreach. Sarah will also showcase how long-term banding data have further strengthened these strategies\, contributing to population growth. Despite these gains\, challenges remain\, including increasing threats from climate change and human disturbance. Yet the resilience of the population and the dedication of the Conservation Team offer hope for continued success. The recovery of the Great Lakes Piping Plover serves as an inspiring example of how rigorous science\, partnerships\, and community engagement can drive meaningful conservation outcomes. \n\nThis event was submitted to our community calendar page by an outside organizer and is not a Michigan Audubon event. SUMMARY:COMMUNITY: Audubon Society of Kalamazoo - Kal Haven Trail Walks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays in April & May – 9:00 AM \nKal Haven Trail\, Kalamazoo \nContinuing the years’ long tradition of Tuesday morning trail walks\, our weekly Kal-Haven Trail walks will be on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM in April and May\, starting April 7.
