SUMMARY:Michigan Birding Trails Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Communities across Michigan are recognizing birding as an economic driver. The US Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that wildlife-watching generates a billion dollars of economic activity in Michigan every year. Michigan’s grassroots-driven birding trails are a demonstration of the commitment of citizens\, businesses\, non-profit organizations\, and agencies to preserving natural resources and promoting bird appreciation and protection. Birding trails offer birders\, naturalists\, and general eco-tourists opportunities to explore diverse habitats across Michigan. Birding trails are typically driving routes linking prime birding locations. \nThe growth of birding trails combines Michigan residents’ and visitors’ passion for birding and love of the open road\, creating new opportunities for connecting birds and people. We want to nurture this growth by providing resources and support for new and existing birding trail organizers and teams. \nOn Friday\, February 24\, 2017\, Michigan Audubon and Sea Grant Michigan will host a birding trails workshop to support this grassroots effort throughout the state. Click below If you are interested in attending and learning more about establishing and maintaining a successful birding trail. For additional information or questions\, please contact Elliot Nelson at elliotne@msu.edu or 906-322-0353. This event is free and open to the public. \nFriday\, February 24\, 2017\n9:30 AM-3:00 PM\nLocation: Boardman River Nature Center\, Traverse City\, MI \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Mackinaw Raptor Fest
DESCRIPTION:Of all bird types\, raptors and waterbirds most excite people and fire the imagination with their wonder\, majesty\, special adaptations\, and abilities. A US Fish and Wildlife Service public survey found that more people travel to see them than any other type of birds. \nMackinaw City\, Michigan\, located at the junction of two peninsulas and two Great Lakes\, creates a unique confluence of migrating birds every spring and fall. The Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch (MSRW)\, a non-profit organization\, was founded in January 2014 primarily to research and educate people about raptors. It is building upon 20 years of owl research and three previous years of hawk counts in this region by independent biologists who largely volunteered their time. \nIn 2016\, MSRW hired eight contractors to conduct research on migrating birds and educate the public. In early April 2016\, it launched the first Mackinaw Raptor Fest\, attended by 120 people. Based on its overwhelming success\, MSRW decided to continue the Fest as a bird-watching and educational opportunity. \nMackinaw Raptor Fest \n* Provides an entertaining and educational showcase to promote public awareness \nand knowledge of raptors and waterbirds and the significance of Mackinaw City and the \nStraits of Mackinac during migration. \n* Promotes positive public attitudes towards raptors and waterbirds and their importance to the environment. \n* Aims to become an internationally renowned annual festival that will generate ongoing ecotourism revenue for the Petoskey/Harbor Springs/Mackinaw City area\, new sponsorship for research on raptors and waterbirds\, and net proceeds to further that research. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:International Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:When birds migrate between nesting and wintering sites\, they don’t just stop anywhere; they rely on a handful of resource-rich and strategically located sites where they may double their body weight as they acquire the energy-rich fat stores needed to fly thousands of kilometers across continents and oceans. These places are known as stopover sites. Some stopover sites are well known\, such as along the coasts of Louisiana\, New Jersey\, and the Upper Bay of Panama\, where birds stop after traveling along the shoreline. Others are inland\, such as Venezuela’s grasslands\, wetlands in the central United States\, and even urban parks and backyards. \nIn 2017\, Environment for the Americas invites you to join their celebration of the importance of stopover sites and their habitats. Whether you learn about a stopover site near your home\, visit one far away\, or create a safe place for birds in your backyard\, your support can mean a safe journey for a migratory bird. Join the celebration!

DESCRIPTION:Please join us from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday\, May 13 for a spring open house as we celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at Capital City Bird Sanctuary\, featuring a variety of nature walks and family-friendly activities. The theme for this year’s International Migratory Bird Day focuses on migratory stopover sites that help birds along their way. Nearly 2 miles of unpaved trails offer visitors a chance to get close to nature and observe birds\, flowers\, and wildlife. This celebration will include activities for adults and children to learn about birds\, plants\, and other creatures that can be found in your own backyard. The event will also feature helpful demonstrations on how to care for bird nest boxes\, create native habitat\, and volunteer with Michigan Audubon. The event will wrap-up with a tree planting ceremony\, sponsored by the Garden Club of Greater Lansing\, to create even better habitat for migratory birds. Please wear sturdy walking shoes or waterproof boots for unpaved\, grassy or muddy trails. Bring binoculars if you have them. We hope to see you there! \nDirections: \nCapital City Bird Sanctuary at Hawk Valley Farm is located northwest of downtown Lansing\, on Delta River Drive.
