SUMMARY:Attracting Bluebirds in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The January meeting of the Grand Rapids Audubon Club will feature a presentation about attracting bluebirds in Michigan. \nBecause of habitat loss\, environmental pollution\, and competition of non-native bird species (House Sparrows and European Starlings)\, bluebirds have suffered large declines compared to their original numbers. Bluebirds have been shown to thrive in areas where there is human-provided housing that is actively monitored. Through the efforts of many people\, they have increased in numbers in the last 10 years. This program will provide information on what you can do to help the population of bluebirds. \nMr. Hagemeister is co-Founder and current President of the Michigan Bluebird Society\, a non-profit organization founded in 2004 to help the Eastern Bluebird and other native cavity nesting birds. Kurt\, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan\, has presented to groups around the State and is author of several articles in various publications. He is a former owner of the Ann Arbor Wild Birds Unlimited store and resides in Ann Arbor. His property is designated a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. It has a yard-bird list of 85 species\, and features many feeders\, nesting boxes\, bird baths\, and plantings for wildlife. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For more information\, visit the Grand Rapids Audubon Club website.

SUMMARY:The Milkweed Community
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oakland Audubon Society for The Milkweed Community presented by Don Drife. \nIt’s well known that milkweeds are essential for the survival of that most iconic butterfly\, the Monarch. Please continue to enter through the main entrance (4 doors)\, and find the Thomas Parlor Room located immediately to your left upon entering. Please continue to park in the big lot off Pleasant Street at the far west end of the church. \nMeeting cancellations: If a meeting is canceled or you are unsure of the status of a meeting\,\nplease check this website\, or call a board member or the church (248-646-1200).

SUMMARY:Vacation on the Riviera Maya - Birding on Family Time
DESCRIPTION:Join the Washtenaw Audubon Society as Jacco Gelderloos offers an exploration of the bird life of the coastal Yucatan peninsula and the birding opportunities it offers. \nJacco Gelderloos was born and raised in the Netherlands\, where his father and older brother got him infected with the birding bug. After moving to the United States in the 1990s\, Jacco was fortunate enough to come into contact with the local birding community. Like many other birders new to the Ann Arbor area\, he was readily brought into the fold of the Washtenaw Wingnuts\, as well as the Washtenaw Audubon Society\, and has enjoyed every last minute of it (for better or worse). As a result\, Jacco has served as WAS Field Trip coordinator and is the current Ann Arbor CBC compiler. Over the years\, Jacco has had the opportunity to bird the Netherlands (and a few surrounding countries)\, the US\, Peru\, Puerto Rico\, Jamaica\, and Mexico\, and is hoping to both expand and intensify his birding horizons in the years to come.

SUMMARY:Michigan Birding Trails Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Communities across Michigan are recognizing birding as an economic driver. The US Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that wildlife-watching generates a billion dollars of economic activity in Michigan every year. Michigan’s grassroots-driven birding trails are a demonstration of the commitment of citizens\, businesses\, non-profit organizations\, and agencies to preserving natural resources and promoting bird appreciation and protection. Birding trails offer birders\, naturalists\, and general eco-tourists opportunities to explore diverse habitats across Michigan. Birding trails are typically driving routes linking prime birding locations. \nThe growth of birding trails combines Michigan residents’ and visitors’ passion for birding and love of the open road\, creating new opportunities for connecting birds and people. We want to nurture this growth by providing resources and support for new and existing birding trail organizers and teams. \nOn Friday\, February 24\, 2017\, Michigan Audubon and Sea Grant Michigan will host a birding trails workshop to support this grassroots effort throughout the state. Click below If you are interested in attending and learning more about establishing and maintaining a successful birding trail. For additional information or questions\, please contact Elliot Nelson at elliotne@msu.edu or 906-322-0353. This event is free and open to the public. \nFriday\, February 24\, 2017\n9:30 AM-3:00 PM\nLocation: Boardman River Nature Center\, Traverse City\, MI \nClick here to register.

The workshop will be held at the Michigan Audubon office. \nLearn how to acquire and install suitable housing\, prepare nests for spring arrival\, and perform regular nest checks to ensure survival of young birds. Briscoe will also share useful internet resources and discuss recording and submitting data. \nPre-registration is required. Please check back soon for details. \nMichigan Audubon sponsors a workshop series on the second Tuesday of each month from March through October. Each month the workshop will focus on a different topic related to birds and birding. Different skill levels and interests will be covered throughout the year.
